Migueldentis Posted June 3, 2022 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2022 Hi, Our first experience with Azamara. Sailing at Journey from Genoa. I know we will be tendered at Giardini Naxos but, does anybody know how to get to Taormina from the place where the tender boats stop?
laurieb Posted June 3, 2022 #2 Share Posted June 3, 2022 We’ve always purchased the transportation that Azamara sells as a shore excursion. I imagine there are taxis available. It’s a long distance from the tender to Taormina 1
Rare oddjob16 Posted June 3, 2022 #3 Share Posted June 3, 2022 It is either taxi or Azamara excursion. We tried to plan for public transport options the last time and we ended up waving off a taxi after a long walk thru Giardini. There was supposed to be a bus, but it never came. We are planning on Azamara shore ex next time. 2
Migueldentis Posted June 3, 2022 Author #4 Share Posted June 3, 2022 Thanks for your answers. Do you remember approximately how much your taxi cost?

I have seen taxis in Giardini Naxos offering trips to Taormina for Euro 25 per car. The Taxi stand is near the place where the tender boats from Azamara arrive. Mrs Miggins Posted June 3, 2022 #6 Share Posted June 3, 2022 Yes taxis and mini buses wait by the tender dock. Much cheaper than the excursion and you can time your trip exactly to your needs. Easy to share with others getting off the ship.

The taxi was 25€ each way. No problem. If you need "no problem", just stay on board for a sea day. Many choices. We might even go for s beach day in Giardini and psy fot the sun beds
Ilovemygarden Posted June 4, 2022 #9 Share Posted June 4, 2022 A couple of weeks ago we took the Hoho - although I think there was also a service bus. Taxis were also plentiful. Taormina is very pretty to stroll around.

zipcruise Posted May 21 #11 Share Posted May 21 Don’t miss to visit the ancient theatre and try some fresh cannoli, very yummy. Taormina is one of my favorite spots in Italy, I always purchase the „Aqua di Taormina“ there, the perfume smells like vacation to me, it’s my signature scent 😍. I also recommend the taxi . Once we took the public bus and I didn’t feel comfy on the small road uphill to Taormina - although the driver was very experienced.

HOHO stands for hop on hop off bus. Tours that are available in a lot of cities - inexpensive and an easy way to see the major attractions.

I have heard Taomina is very beautiful.

We will be sure to visit the ancient theatre!!
cruisinclined Posted June 4 #15 Share Posted June 4 Best to go on your own as Taormina is very accessible with stunning views. The taxis were held to a 25 euro fixed price when we visited a few years ago and, as has been said, you can easily share with another couple if you are one or two. The Roman theatre does have long lines in busy seasons but is worth a wait providing the heat is bearable. You can view and photo Etna. through its framework. We picked up a return taxi at the far end of the town which saved a longish walk back.
biggersn Posted June 11 #16 Share Posted June 11 We took the local bus from Giardini Naxos and had no problem, at a fraction of the cost of a taxi.
hamrag Posted June 20 #17 Share Posted June 20 (edited) We were in Taormina a week ago, with Seabourn. At the tender drop off point there were taxis waiting, a couple were vans so probably taking up to 8 passengers thus reducing fare per person. We wanted to walk along the promenade of Giardini Naxos before going up to Taormina, with no specific plan. We walked to the far end, at least two and possibly three miles before boarding a public bus (not the HoHo) up to Taormina. Wouldn't recommend walking that far, as half way along it becomes less nice an area. There is a monstrosity of a building about half way so I'd recommend stopping at a bus stop anywhere around there! The bus stops at the Taormina Bus Terminus, and it's probably a 500m walk up a slight incline to the town. We couldn't get a taxi at the end of our trip, they all had bookings or people in them, it was very busy and impossible. We walked back to the bus terminus, and I noticed immediately across the road there is a little 'hut' building which will arrange a taxi for you. Ours took 2 minutes to arrive, and we were whisked to the tender port in about 15 minutes at 30 euros fare. Edited June 20 by hamrag
alfredo1 Posted June 20 #18 Share Posted June 20 Changed times?? Last time we were there Azamara ran a shuttle service to Taormina. Maybe will again??

The strong taxi unions in Sicily won’t allow cruise lines to operate free shuttles, it’s been that way for a while and I don’t think it will change anytime soon. brookerme Posted Monday at 09:52 PM #20 Share Posted Monday at 09:52 PM I’d like to take a taxi up and the cable car down. It ends at Mazzaro, about 7 km from the cruise port. Will there be taxis or Uber to get back to the cruise port?
