Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

Recommended Posts

Thorshavn is located on the east coast of the Faroe Islands' largest island, Streymoy.  With its 20,000 inhabitants, the city is the largest city in the Faroe Islands and the country's cultural, economic and traffic center.

‘Tinganes’ and the old town are located on the peninsula "Á Reyni".  The narrow alleys and old houses with grass roofs are one of the city's main attractions.
But it is the islands' unique nature and the small towns that are the real attraction.  Rent a car or take part in an excursion.

This was one of our favorite cruise stops.  We loved the long sail in through the fiords.  It began with rain and then turned to sunshine.  There were water falls everywhere.  Very surreal.

A member of our cruise critic roll call organized a tour which we joined.  It combined two tours into one to see the most.  The 2 tours are below.

[edit--forgot to mention this was 8 years ago.  However, I see the tour company still gives tours]

The tour company was GreenGate.

Explore the Faroe Islands - GreenGate

My only complaint is that this was a tour of the islands and we never toured Torshavn.

I looked back on an email the Cruise Critic organizer sent describing the tours.  This is what he said:

Visit Vágar – Panoramic Tour:
Drive ... over the "Bridge over the Atlantic" - the bridge connecting Eysturoy and Streymoy and further along the coast to Leynar village and through the new 4,9 km long tunnel under the Vestmanna Sound to the island of Vágar. Visit the village of Sandavág and the village church, Miðvág, Sørvág, Bø and Gásadalur, the last village to get road connection. Enjoy the fantastic view of Tindhólm and Mykines.

Northern Eysturoy and Gjógv:
By bus to Eysturoy via the subtunnel. Drive along Skálafjord, the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands and continue along Funningsfjord and pass the village Funningur where the first Viking stepped ashore. Continue to the village Gjógv with its natural harbour that has given name to the village. Gjógv means gorge. Walk along the gorge where you might see a few puffins. After a visit in the village church you drive pass the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands "Slættaratindur", 882 m. Next a photostop viewing the free standing cliffs "The Giant and the Hag". Pass the village Eiði and south on the west side of Eysturoy. On the way you see the "bridge over the Atlantic" - the bridge connecting Eysturoy and Streymoy.

From my email correspondence with GreenGate:
A combination of "Northern Eysturoy and Gjogv" and "Visit Vagar - Panoramic Tour" gives a good impression of our islands and the best view of our landscape. It will take approx. 5½-6 hours depending upon how long you spend at each stop. If the weather is good you will probably want to stay longer both in Gjogv and in Vagar. With 6 hours you should have a good tour.

Sounds like it was a lovely tour.

We didn't do anything as in-depth as that, simply took the public bus across to Klaksvik (another cruise port) which gave us a scenic tour of the islands.  We then explored Torshavn when we returned.

Klaksvik was tiny so we returned quite quickly, but we knew that before we went and the purpose of going there was to get a scenic drive, which we got.

Thanks for posting.  We are not interested in the ship's tours and were thinking of just spending the time wandering around Torshavn.  How long was the bus ride to Klaksvik?

Link to bus operator - route 400  - it’s 90 minutes each way.

There appears to be also faster Express bus route 400 between these two cities, albeit the timetable is probably not that convienient for most cruise passangers since the departures from Tórshavn are weekdays at 6:25 and 16:15 and from Klaksvík only in the weekday mornings at 6:25 and 7:35.

I would also suggest a tour to Esysturoy and Gjogv. Torshaven itself is nice enough, but it would be a shame not experience the stunning and unique scenery which the Faroe Islands offer. We went on a ship tour to Gjogv which had  a couple of stops along the way, and which was an amazing way to spend a few hours.
