We would like to do a few things on our own after our tour ends.

two different maps show almost an hour walk from where it seems the large ships dock to

the main gate.

Depends which ship and port you are at?
The one closest to Palma it is only a short walk to catch the #1 bus into town.

If you are on Wonder they use Dique del Oeste which is much further up the main road.

When I was there, we didn't take an excursion....we just walked around.  It was time well spent.

The one thing that stands out in my mind is that huge cathedral that is there.  Absolutely beautiful.  I wouldn't miss that.

There is a small gift shop around the side of the cathedral that sold alot of Mallorca pearl necklaces, they were very pretty. Close by across a street was a Zara Home store where I bought the loveliest big bath towel, still use it to this day.  I also enjoyed looking at all the flowers and green spaces.  It certainly was a nice visit.

If you're talking Palma, when we were there, there was a shuttle to the cathedral near the middle of the curving waterfront area.  It was free for Oceania passengers, but I'm not sure if it is for everyone. There was also a HoHo bus stop not too far away from where we docked.  But yes, port is kind of far.
