Example:  last night our butler literally chased us down the corridor to catch up to us so that she could escort DH and me to dinner.

Was it Mary? 😉

I’m not sure if the a/c units are all connected like they are on older ships.

They are connected in groups.

thanks for the quick response.  Not what I want to hear, though.😒

Sorry.  My suggestion:  pack an extension cord and request a fan for your room. Moving air helps. Wish I had thought of this before. Actually you may not need the extension now that I look at the outlets. I’m goi g to ask my butler about a fan and will report back.

Good luck with the fan request.  I was looking at reviews and found a few that mentioned how warm the rooms were, both YC and non.

I was looking for one in particular that upgraded his complaint from his butler and concierge to a higher level and the a/c problem was fixed, but not till the next to last day.  I can't seem to find that review though.

I did have this problem once on an older HAL ship......and it was miserable.

Extension cords may be confiscated. Ours was on Divina.

It won't be taken if it is a simple extension cord, or at least shouldn't be taken.  Did you have one with a circuit breaker by any chance?  I've always carried one for a CPap machine.

Yes it did. Circuit breaker and voltage regulator in it.

I got it back at the end.

Entertainment is typical cruise ship fare although they did a mini opera of Madam Butterfly yesterday afternoon and it was simply amazing. Oh the voices!  It was about 40 minutes long, which was perfect. Last nights main theater show was just ok.

I hesitate to say it, but since you specifically said “voices”, I do want to point out that the tenor and soprano leads (which were outstanding) were the only vocals that were sung live. All other parts as well as all the music were a recording.

The strength of the two leads were so good that it was easy to set the other aside and enjoy the show. It was still solid and unique entertainment.

We were on in Dec in the YC and the Temp was great and we like it cold at night.  In June in the YC the AC was pretty good but there were times that the AC temp was changed while we were out and the room was hot.  We would put it down again.   However, people 2 doors down we were traveling with said their room was always a bit warm at night.

I always travel with a small fan.  We were on a NCL cruise 15 years back and it was very warm in the room so we call friends that had not boarded yet and told them to bring an fan and on for us.  Since then I always travel with a fan.

Yes, we were not put off by the prerecorded vocals. It was the lead voices to which I was referring. They were outstanding IMO but I’m no opera expert. In fact, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, although I sound great in my head 😊. Therefore, my litmus test is quite low.

The problem is what you refer to as a "voltage regulator" which is likely a surge protector.  Surge protectors are fire hazards on cruise ships and prohibited by all cruise lines.  My understanding is that the issue is how surge protectors work which is incompatible with the electric systems on modern cruise ships.  The technical explanation is beyond my pay grade (folks who are interested can Google the subject) but suffice it to say that a surge protector used on a ship endangers everyone.

The solution is simple.  If you need an extension cord or power strip make sure to get one WITHOUT any surge or voltage protection.

Actually the voltage regulator is a step down transformer and the extension cord comes with a variety of plugs.

We use it on non USA cruise ships mostly, but we bring it on USA ships because there is never enough outlets. Always 1 or 2 standard plugs as we know it and 1 or 2 Europlugs so we plug into the europlug and have extra USA plugs.

I get it :).  We always carry a small very high quality power strip (3 outlets and 3 USB outlets)

Amazon.com: Travel Power Strip with USB Ports, NTONPOWER 3 Outlet&3 USB Power Strip, 5ft Portable Extension Cord with USB Ports, Nightstand Desktop Charging Station for Home Office Dorm Room Cruise, White : Electronics

which is fine on ships because it has no surge protector.  We have never had an issue getting that on any ship (we cruise about 100 days a year).  But if the security folks in the cruise terminal even suspect that they see a strip or cord with a surge protector, it will usually be seized (and returned after the cruise.  Keep in mind that fire is about the most feared event on a cruise ship.  I also carry several varieties of outlet "adaptors" to fit just about any outlet in the world (we need the on our trips).  Most cruise ships never seem to have enough outlets :(.

Good luck with the fan request.

So the fan request was a no go. And the aghast look I received when asking was priceless. DH and I had a good laugh. But there’s good news, Mafig!  We spoke to Phil, the YC director and explained the situation. He immediately whipped out his phone and within the hour our problem was solved. Last night I actually slept with covers!  Room was nice and cool. So lesson learned. We should have escalated to YC Director much sooner as the rooms obviously have the capability of going colder. Am beginning to wonder if my need for a cold room is one of those subtle cultural differences between me and my fellow international cruiser who may not require such sleeping conditions.

I'm very happy that your a/c problem has been solved.

YC Director Phil.....I'll keep that in mind for when we go.

I mentioned that we once had a similar problem on a HAL cruise.  It was extremely hot in our cabin.  We went to our Cruise Critic Meet and Greet and luckily the Hotel Director was there.  I was in a really cranky mood after a night of no sleep.  He, too, whipped out his phone and by the time the meeting was over and we were back to our cabin, the room was nice and cool.  We also received a bottle of wine and an invite to the most cruised HAL cocktail party for "our trouble" even though it was our first HAL cruise.

So I was going to suggest the Hotel Director to you if  you were still suffering today.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.   Enjoy the rest of your cruise!😀

I'm appreciating the tips being shared, especially regarding the AC. Our cruise in May was wonderful, but I kept seeing this guy (officer) hanging around, but not really doing anything. I finally asked someone near the end of the cruise and I guess it was the YC director. He never introduced himself or seemed to interact.  Maybe I need to pay more attention next time.

Our director is a recent MSC acquisition from RCL. He hasn’t been with the company long but he has been very personable. One thing I’ve realized as an American sailing on this ship is that language is a barrier at times. Perhaps some of the ships’ officers have been reluctant to speak to the guests because they don’t know the language of the guests in their midst. I’m just venturing a guess bc I’ve read some reviews where people have commented on the reluctance of the officers to engage with the passengers. In 5 days we’ve encountered 10 different languages and counting.

  • 8 months later...

We are due to sail on 3 June from Southampton and received the message today.  Not sure whether the message needs to be replied to twice as we are a couple.

. We are going to request Strega (well they are an Italian cruise line but it will test them) or Ricard Pastis or failing that a red wine. Also a small fan for DW.  Not bothered about the pillows.  Very impressed to receive such an email at all.

Of our 2 cruises in the past 12 months the first one sent an email in advance of sailing while pour last they did not.  Next sailing is in August and assume if we will get an email it won’t be before mid July

My husband won’t be able to sleep if it’s too hot. Thanks for the advice!

What’s the best red wine we can request?
