Any recent cruisers out of New Orleans?

I’ve heard 2 different answers to the question “when does the casino open”?   Some say that it doesn’t open for several hours until the ship gets out into the ocean but some say it opens right after sailing.    This is specific to New Orleans.

Any recent sailers for N.O.?

We have cruised several times out of NOLA. Its not so much getting into international waters as getting out of the ship channel and into the Mississippi river. There's some magical spot where it ends. It opens sooner than if when you hit the ocean, Also, If you're a smoker, keep in mind they stop selling cigarettes' before the ship hits the River on the last night. We don't smoke but there were some pretty upset people who couldn't buy any and ran out. It was around 9;00pm the night before or maybe sooner.

If you’ve cruised out of New Orleans in the past year, how long after sailing does the casino open?  That’s my question.  I don’t care where we are and I don’t smoke so I don’t care about purchasing cigarettes.  Thanks

Cruised in July. It was open within in the hour of heading straight. That meaning the ship faces one direction. Then at sail away it turns 180 which takes a few minutes. If theres not much traffic in the ship channel, it should be within 30 minutes to an hour of sail away. As i said, it depends on how quickly they hit that magic spot. A lot will depend on how slow the captain wants to go so people can see the landscape along the way.

I am not discounting your experience, but you were on Carnival. Surprisingly, the answer is not always the same for different cruise lines.  For example, out of Baltimore, Carnival opens the casino earlier than RC, because Carnival has made the decision to pay Maryland blackmail, and RC has not.

I don't know if any of that applies to New Orleans.  🙂

Check with current rollcalls.

Royal Caribbean hasn't cruised out of NOLA in a few years. The first "return to NOLA" cruise embarks next Friday.

hoosier sailor is the best offer of information.  🙂

We were on Valor in September and the casino was open by dinner time. (Long before the ship is out of the river)

I'll be on Radiance OTS on the first sailing - Nov. 3 (Thursday). I'll check it out and report back.

Actually I have been on several cruises out of NOLA including river boat gambling. They have to get out of the ship channel as well. They cannot open until they hit a certain spot as well. And it depends on how fast the captain goes. It was similar to the Houston ship channel when ships cruised out of there. It was a long channel that took time to get to open water. Which is why they opened the Galveston terminal. Easier and faster to get to open water.
