Hayhu - a must do

Jumping back onto the thread to let you know we enjoyed Hayhu so much! It is one of the prettiest beach clubs I have seen in the Caribbean. Service was prompt but not intrusive & our server even brought my drink to the ocean for me! Didn’t try any of the food but the drinks were delicious, not very strong but very tasty.

The beach was raked to keep the seaweed down and the gardens manicured throughout the day. Lounge chairs were very comfortable & views amazing.

Transportation couldn’t have been easier. After leaving the port area where the stores are, continue to walk straight through the gates, leaving the port area completely. There were several taxi drivers waiting there. We were provided our drivers name & cab number that morning but he took the extra step of having a paper with our names on it!

The manager took the time to carefully explain our bill and showed us the final amount due in US Dollars, Pesos & via Credit Card. Discount was provided for cash.

For those unused to international travel, Hayhu makes it very comfortable.

I found the club a bit quiet for my taste – my husband said it was perfect. I thought the cost was quite reasonable for the level of service and quality of experience. We both agreed we would return.

Thanks for the feed back. Which package did you do and how long was the taxi ride?

OK, sorry it's taken a week, but work has been busy after the holidays! OK, here's my thoughts, we loved this place...so peaceful! However, based on your comments about a smaller group, I'd skip the VIP pkg, but would get there early.

We had an 0930 pickup from our pier which was a different pier than the other cruise ships. We were the first guests there for the day and had a great reception by the staff before being escorted up to our VIP deck. Now, there were 4 of us and the deck was most accommodating. Having said that, we had a $300 food/drink credit that came with the VIP experience and we only used $230 of it despite our best efforts to drink it all away LOL!! So, if you are a smaller party, I'd skip the VIP deck and go regular admission. Now, the place did fill up within 90 mins-to 2 hrs after we arrived, so I'd get there early to pick your spot.

For lunch, we had the guacamole for appetizer...order exztra chips...it was made fresh on the premises and was so good, we ordered a second batch! We then ordered the $140 grilled meat platter...OMG, so good and so much! We actually did not finish it all! Definitely order it, though! DW loved the beef short ribs as the best.

Our kids went out on the 2 sea kayaks, even in the rain showers while DW and I huddled in our private bathroom with all our stuff to keep it dry. Everyone else sought shelter in the main house.

As for the kite surfing, the Instructor e-mailed us the day before saying the forecast was for minimal winds, so he canceled our lessons. Well, with the storms that rolled in, there was ample wind for everybody! No worries, we'll try again next port visit.

At the end, they will give you your bill with a credit card price and a discounted cash price. I brought plenty of cash and instead of $492 balance due, it was $451...I like those kind of deals! We also put $120 in the tip jar at the bar...well worth the very attentive service we enjoyed.

So, yes, if we cruise back to Costa Maya, we're going back to Hayhu again! So relaxing, great service, great food, enjoyable beach day!!

Was the balance due at the end the cost of the deck after paying the $600 upfront?

we’re a bit confused on the costs there. If we do the mid level it costs $250 for a space w/$100 food credit. Their menu doesn’t have prices so we’re not sure how long that $100 can stretch us while we’re there.

We are considering this when in costa maya but we do not want the deck, it’s just the two of us. Do you know the cost for 2 lounge chairs and also did you see any animals? I’m afraid of snakes! Yikes

Thanks!

We just booked the mid level option for our April 9th cruise on Allure. They confirmed availability and showed us a photo of which lounger area would be ours. It looks very nice and we're excited to see how it all pans out.

I just booked Hayhu Beach for our April 23 cruise on Allure of the Seas.  I have never cruised on a ship of this size; I can only imagine the impact it can have on crowds at Costa Maya.  I booked Ala Carte for two people.

I booked the cruise a few days ago so I am just now starting excursion planning which is probably a little late for this ship and port.  I tried to book Maya Chan for our date but it was not available.

I visited Hayhu on 27-April.  The beach was piled high with seaweed and the water was very rough and somewhat murky.  We enjoyed playing in the surf and didn't mind the seaweed.   The surf was too rough to swim out to the reef.  We walked along the beach sometimes on top of the seaweed but usually in the sand and water with occasional steps sinking deep into little pockets of quicksand.

We were set up on chairs in the shade but could sit on chairs in the sun as there were only a few other people there.  It was very relaxing.  We ate the grilled vegetables with shrimp and it was excellent.

The walk from the cruise port to the taxi was explained very well with messages on Whatsapp including pictures and map.  We walked down the center median of the road.  The taxi driver had a sign with my name on it when we finally arrived at the intersection where he was parked.  It wasn't a long walk but it was long enough for me to wonder a little if I was going to the right place; very simple after the fact...

Oh no!  I'm going back there in July.  Last October it was wonderful with no seaweed at all.  I really hope it gets better.  We had a beautiful calm day when we were there.  I've been to Mahahual when its windy and cloudy and it is not a fun experience.  That's a shame.

I think we just caught the weather at the wrong (or right) time.  We still enjoyed it.  I think the person I was with preferred the waves as she had not experienced something like this before and she thought the seaweed was cool.  I tried to show her how to body surf.  I just kept thinking murky water and seaweed gives the sharks a higher chance to mistake me for food; at least on the Florida Gulf Coast I feel this way.  I've seen the seaweed piled up there at times as well.

We visited West Bay Beach in Roatan after our zip-line.  The water was clear and slick as glass so we got a little variety.

Costa Maya has had a difficult time this year between sargassum and winds. More ships seem to have abandoned their stop than I have ever heard before but that is possibly because more ships are scheduled to stop there.

It is certainly a port that is experiencing difficulties both man-made and due to Mother Nature.

Were you advised in advance via WhatsApp of the sargassum situation on the day?

Were they actively trying to clear the beach, or not?

No advance notice.

There were people sweeping the beach but the sargassum was there in piles.  There were some clear areas in the sand but we had to walk through the beached sargassum to get to the water.  The high wave activity kept the sargassum pushed into the beach and it was thick.

There were no large mats of sargassum in the water because the surf was breaking it up and piling it up on the beach.  I've been in water when it was difficult to wade through masses of sargassum out in the water.

Neither one of us thought to take pictures.

Wow.  I'm going to definitely ask them beforehand as I get a slight skin reaction to it.  It goes away eventually but I try to avoid it. Thanks for the update.

Just found this pictures from about a month ago on Google reviews.  I definitely am going to keep checking.  Im not so concerned about the beach as much as the water as I can always walk around the beach.

A couple of pictures I took at the pier.  The one without the Allure of the Seas is looking right on the opposite side of the long pier going out to the ship.  It is not real easy to see but it shows how high the waves were coming into shore there due to strong winds.  The ship was rocking some at the dock as the waves were coming in broadside.  (The ship & pier were blocking the waves on the left side of the approach.)
