If we want to keep our phone on ...I realize we have to move it into Airplane Mode...but what else needs to be turned off so we don't get a crazy Verizon bill?

Airplane mode is generally all you have to do for most phones including iPhones.  If you have wifi on the ship, you'll want to check that the Wi-Fi calling setting enabled

Just turn off cellular data and make sure calls are in wifi mode

And do that before you leave home. Friend we were with tried to enable it using the WiFi calling once onboard but got prompt to call Verizon. Had to wait until they were back on land to get it enabled.

I just learned the hard way after our September cruise that turning off cellular (iPhone) was not enough. Shift your phone into Airplane Mode.

If an iPhone, once onboard, two settings greatly improve the odds of staying on wifi when moving about the ship:

1)  Settings, General, Wifi, scroll down, ensure/update the "Auto-Join Hotspot" to "automatic"

2)  Settings, General, Wifi, touch the ships wifi network blue i in a circle, turn on "Auto-Join"

Follow up ...if us technology challenged phone folks need some help is there a 'cell phone' doctor we can visit on board

All Celebrity ships have personnel  in the i lounge and also the guest relations desk staff are pretty good with phones too
