Rare babs135 Posted December 20, 2022 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2022 A frequent question asked here is whether xxxxx ship is going through the old or new locks; I've asked this question myself. Is there any way we could have a pinned list of ships that meet the requirements for transiting through the old locks?
BillB48 Posted December 20, 2022 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2022 Here you go, this is a complete list of ships that fit in the Panamax Locks (original locks) and if it is not listed here, it just won't fit! All kidding aside, I only included ships that had a chance of being in the North American market and there are some of the smaller cruise lines that are not included. If anyone would like to add or correct something... feel free. I have no idea on how to get the moderators to perhaps pin this list. Let me add one wee disclaimer... A situation could arise a Panamax ship may have to use the new locks because of Canal convenience or operational necessity. Unlikely, but possible. BillB48 Posted December 24, 2022 #14 Share Posted December 24, 2022 From the contributions of posters, here is a little more complete list of Panamax ships. Travel Junkie Judy Posted April 19, 2023 #15 Share Posted April 19, 2023 Seems that there are many ships that can still use the Panamax (original) locks. We leave on Friday on the NCL SUN. It's their smallest ship and I love her! We go through the canal next week. Judy

Viking Ocean All ships in the fleet may use the original locks. Windstar All ships in the fleet may use the original locks. I noticed that the Azamara Onward is not listed. It's the same size as the other R-class ships in Azamara's fleet, so I assume it can also use the original locks. A previous poster mentioned Oceania's Insignia, Nautica, Regatta, Sirena, Marina, and Riviera. What about the Vista and Allura? Alan
BillB48 Posted March 9 #17 Share Posted March 9 The Azamara Onward is definitely original locks material, as well Oceania Vista and Allure. Actually they are on the "small" side and don't crowd the maximums for the original locks. If the dimensions of a ship are 965x106 or less, she is a candidate for the original locks. Rare Essiesmom Posted March 28 #18 Share Posted March 28 I note Explora Journeys ships are not on the list…possibly because it is a new line, extension of MSC. Explora l has length of 813, beam 105, so within Panamax dimensions. Yet today, 3/28, she is transiting through the new locks. EM
