For the record, I don't smoke and never did or have vaped.

Correct, I don't smoke AND never did or have vaped!  It true, I don't smoke and I've never vaped.  I don't understand the confusion.  I didn't say that I've never smoked, even in that simple sentence.

It is a simple sentence.  You said you "don't smoke and never did".  Then you added "or have vaped".

It's not a big deal.  I thought maybe you were a husband/wife on the same account or something.

Nope, my intent was that I never did or have vaped.  I guess it would have been clearer for you if I said "NOR"

But, you are right, it's no big deal, so I'll leave it there.

It's funny, I just scanned an article, a few days ago and the article said that "most" insurance companies classify vapers as smokers, many also classify chewing tobacco as smoking.  That's not a medical classification, it's a financial one.  But, my question really was more of a real medical one. Has any of the Heart and/or Lung organizations, FDA, or whatever classify vaping the same as smoking?  I know that may not be able to answer that question.   It's just a question in the far reaches of my mind.  No big deal.

Not sure, I think they’re waiting for more research.

Good find.  And I think that article by the FDA, in a roundabout way, answers my question.  The FDA is still separating their resources, for example:  FDA's Center for Tobacco Products and then they have Vaping Prevention and Education Resource Center.

I don't think they are ready to medically link the two together, yet.  It probably won't be long though.  I hope they do and they move quickly to keep kids from vaping in a more urgent manner.  To be honest, I don't care if adults vape, that's part of being an adult, I have the freedom to move away from the source if I want to and/or not go to places that allow vaping.  I was once one of those that defended vaping, even though I don't and haven't use them.  I was all for aids/crutches to help stop smoking.  But, the more I read the "real" science (I don't remember what "real" science I read, it was a few years ago), the more I fully understood the issues with it.

You don't mind the smell, but what about the next passengers in the cabin? There are many people who are very sensitive to smells.

Very true.  However, I'm very sensitive to the smell of fish, to the point of a physical reaction, some perfumes (which in some cases I can smell in the cabin next door), and others!  Can I get a law, rule, or regulation for that?  Can we get some social rebuke of those smells/products?   Where does it all stop?

But, my real issue here is someone says they don't mind the smell of something, then some, a very few, find the need to find fault with the person's likes or dislikes that does not have any harmful effects to anyone else, it's a passive act.  The person(s), and I, said that we don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke.  It isn't us that is doing the smoking, we just don't mind being around it.  So, what is the issue  If someone is smoking in a cabin next door and you don't like it and/or are sensitive to it, it's YOUR business to take the appropriate action, appropriate for you.  For me, if I'm adjacent to the authorized smoking area, I'll enjoy it.  If I smell or see smoking in an unauthorized area, I'd consider doing something about it.

My point, why criticize or make issue of someone that isn't participating in the act that is so offensive to you.  You meaning anyone that finds fault of someone that likes the smell of something and is doing no harm to anybody else.  I like the smell of actively utilized barns (I'm an old farm boy), I don't demand that anyone else has to or find fault of those that don't.

I get your point, however none of the actions you mentioned are against any Royal Caribbean rules. Smoking in your cabin is. Neither my husband or I like the smell, for me it's an asthma thing. Sorry that the smell of some perfumes that must be terrible. Hope it doesn't happen often. I didn't mean to be critical, just point out that the actions could impact others without their knowledge.

I don't have a problem with following rules, I know that's not your point.  I just always feel that I need to get that out there.  I may not agree with them all but I'll follow them.

My overall point is complaining or making issue with those that don't have a problem a passive action.  If you said that you like to smell Chanel #5 and I get deathly sick from it, I won't make issue with you by name or in any other way.  Your post/response addresses a person that was not smoking, just smelling the smoke and not having a problem with it or actually enjoying it.  Again, not engaging in the action(s) that offend you.

AND, I know that there are rules governing smoking on a ship and elsewhere.  I was just asking if people don't like this, that, or the other, do we make new rules/regulations/laws for them, where does it all stop.  Where does my rights end and your rights begin.  No, I'm not asking for rules governing the smell of fish or perfume.  We have enough rules/regulations/laws already.

I think it is clear that your issue (and I don't blame you) is with people smoking in unauthorized areas.  Not with those, like me, that don't mind the smell of smokers/smoking.  So, I don't know why the need to find issue with those that don't mind it, they're not smoking, just breathing.

Well I’m just being honest here = either Royal will grant the formal permission we have requested and have it treated as any other legally prescribed medication and let her take it with dignity away from second hand smoke OR she is still going to do it in the cabin anyway and take her chances with being kicked off.  Everything in life has a consequence I guess.  Sorry if that infuriates people it’s just how it is.

What an interesting thread this has turned out to be!  First of all, kudos to your pal for trying to quit smoking. I don’t know about the health benefits of vaping over smoking, or it’s effectiveness at helping smoking cessation, but at least it’s not as offensive smelling to bystanders. I get her desire to not be around other smokers as she is trying to quit and it reeks. I’m not a smoker, but have noticed that on the larger Oasis class ships that there seems to be a smoking area outside on deck 5 or 6 starboard that generally only has a couple of smokers around at any given time. If she doesn’t get the approval, maybe she could check out vaping in that area instead of the heavily populated casino or pool deck?

Thank you for your kind words.  I happened to find out today that my bestie has stepped down in nicotine as part of her cessation plan she is on.  I wasn’t aware this was part of the plan (or possible) so I learned something new.  She actually said that after a couple of days now at this lower level she feels pyscholigcally ready to set a date to put down the vape entirely. I’ve never heard her talk like that so I’m excited.

She is bemused that I’ve taken on the whole vaping crusade on her behalf but she actually said that by the time of our next cruise she may be completely off vaping too.  I’m very excited.  We are on another quantum class ship unfortunately where the deck 5 is semi enclosed so not an option on the upcoming one - unlessshe finds it filled only with other vapers or she has it to herself.  But hopefully she is completely done with it by then - that would be truely amazing if so.  The only downside is that the people on this thread may not get the satisfaction of hearing about us getting dumped off the ship ha ha.  I do truely hope I don’t ever have to worry about this issue again except for keeping her away from cigarette smoke in general as it makes her feel nauseous now (ironic I know - and particularly since as a non smoker I have spent untold hours with her in smoking venues and areas over our 25 yr friendship - breathing second hand smoke and not complaining about it ha ha the things you do for friendship).  I am quietly confident but if she does need to go back to the vape I will continue to be supportive because smoking tobacco is not where I want to see her ever again end up.  🙂

I watched a guy walk into Home Goods on Saturday with his hand curled around something.  As he got to the door to enter he vaped and then put his hand by his side.  Is it really so hard to leave it in the car while you shop?   Heaven forbid that he is separated from it for 1/2 hour or so.🙄

Just off quantum of the seas.  I can definitely attest that they do not enforce the no vaping (e cigs) in cabins.  My best friend and I shared a balcony room and she vaped the entire week in the room (not on the balcony or anywhere else).  I didn’t mind - I kind of like the very subtle smell.  No alarms went off or anything as the smoke deter was not set off by the very small amount of vape. AND the room attendant even saw her do it and he said as long as she doesn’t do it anywhere else like on the balcony shell be fine!!!!  So, if you have a low smoke, low smell vape you are more than likely going to be fine vaping in your cabin.  Discrete is the word tho. 🙂

What would she have done if it did set off the sprinklers? Talking about egg on her face. Why can’t she go for a week without vaping? Never in my life would I have tried it.

You’ve obviously never had a nicotine addiction, going two hours without it is very physically uncomfortable. It’s just as addictive as heroin, which is why many smokers use vaping as a delivery system so they don’t feel ill.

Vaping devices don't set off sprinklers.  Sprinklers are set off by high heat, not smoke/vapor.

But, smoke detectors can be set off.  We've done bridge tours where it's been mentioned that the shower steam can set them off and has.
