Ship Casinos

In the thread asking about taxes on drinks, it was mentioned that the ships traveling interisland never reach international waters.

does this mean that the ships‘ casinos will not open overnight between islands, and will only open when the ship is done with Hawaii on the way back to the mainland?

No. the casinos are open.

It is my memory that the casinos are closed while the ships are in Hawaii territorial waters. The NCL Pride of America doesn't even have casino.

But I never use the casino so perhaps I am wrong.

Scott, I hope Bruce is right, because when not in port, we spend a lot of time in the ship's casino.  If you are right, maybe we'll have enough spare time to see what movies are playing (MUTS).

The ships definitely go outside the 12 nm limit when sailing between islands (the distances are so short, that it is easy to get outside 12 nm and still make the morning arrival).  Federal law prohibits any vessel that starts and ends its voyage in Hawaii from having any gambling.  Since the foreign flag ships don't make closed loop cruises in Hawaii, they can have an open casino.  Prior to NCL having the US flag ships in Hawaii, the Norwegian Star was doing closed loop cruises, with a port call at Fanning Island, Republic of Kuribati, and had the casino onboard permanently sealed and shut.

We did the NCL Spirit from Vancouver to Honolulu last October and the casino closed the night before we reached our first port in Hawaii and remained closed for the duration of our cruise (5 days).

How distressful!  Five days without gaming?!

I am watching Traveling Sisters' Live Report in the Princess Cruise Line forum for the Patters to be posted showing the casino hours on in-port days, so I can see if the casino opens up at night.  I think the thread is only up to the third at-sea day, so I'll need to wait some more.

I just checked my Patters from my Oct 2022 cruise and the Grand Casino was closed every day we were in the Hawaiian Chain. It did not reopen until we were 1 hour out of Hilo, our last stop.
