mrshorsy Posted March 19, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2023 We’re from the Uk and have booked a cruise out of Rome, so will naturally have Euros for all the stops to spend when we are off the boat. My question is when on the boat would you tip in Euros or Dollars?
hawkeyetlse Posted March 19, 2023 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2023 (edited) Both will be graciously accepted. Crew members spend most of their time on board, so they mostly operate in USD, but if you're based in the UK/Europe, there is no need to go out of your way to get USD in cash. Euros are absolutely fine. You can even give them GBP. Even if they can't use it right away, or have to go through extra steps to use it, you're still giving them money (as opposed to giving them nothing). It will be appreciated. My question is when on the boat would you tip in Euros or Dollars? US Dollars is the currency on the ship, regardless of where she sails. I would not spend the money to exchange GBP for US Dollars just for that purpose. Tip in GBP or tip in Euros. The crew will have incur the expense of exchanging the GBP and Euros to dollars. They can use the Euros if they go ashore (e.g., your room steward who works 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, 7 days a week, they probably don't get off the ship very often where they can spend Euros). julig22 Posted March 19, 2023 #6 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Euros will be fine, since that is what you have. If you gamble in the casino you will need USD. You can charge cash to your credit card (3% convenience fee) and the conversion would be done by you bank which should be cheaper than the rate the ship charges, assuming you don't pay additional foreign transaction fees - charges are US based. Many US-based cards give rebates for travel purchases so the 3% is often a wash - if your card works the same way. ATM on board is $5.95.
