Dream or Vista class, deck 6 balcony. Can you smell cigarettes?

I’m reading that smoking is allowed on the promenade deck (5) starboard side on Dream and Vista class ships. If you’ve had a balcony on deck 6, could you smell cigarette smoke coming from one deck below? I personally don’t care that much but my wife isn’t as forgiving. Thanks for any input!

I assume it depends on where you are on Deck 6 - if you are far forward one assumes you'd never smell the smoke from deck 5, if the ship is moving.

EDIT:

Also, Carnival's website says this about smoking on Vista:

  • Outdoors: Smoking is permitted in designated areas on Deck 5 (port side and starboard side, forward) and Deck 11 (starboard side, forward and aft).
  • Note: Cigar and tobacco pipes are only permitted at the outdoor smoking areas on Deck 5 (starboard side, forward) and Deck 11 (starboard side, aft).

Note that is says both Port and Starboard sides, forward on Deck 5.

Based on that, perhaps if you are aft-of-midship you might not notice it either, since it could have dissipated.

Why cruise lines still allow smoking onboard is beyond me.  The casinos are so disgusting I can barely walk through them.  I have zero sympathy for smokers who wouldn't cruise anymore, they can just go hang out in the Indian casinos for all I care.

a lot of the indian casinos are nonsmoking now as well.

I hate to smell and be around smoke too.

I think an out of the way outdoor area for smokers is fine. But I agree indoor smoking needs to go.

I guess until the proportion of gamblers who smoke is diminished to such a low level that the on-board income from them is not important, the smoking casinos will remain. Too much revenue from them right now.

However, I wouldn't be surprised to see the split of non-smoking casino and smoking casino continue and eventually be swapped as on-board locations, where the smoking casino is the one you don't need to walk through.

I enjoy my cigarettes in the morning in the casino, with a hot cup of Joe, .

As a sane, non-smoker, I can say that I truly enjoyed your response to the overly enthusiastic previous response. 😊👍🏻👍🏻

I don't care for the casino smoke myself; I grew up in the 70s were both my parents smoked and on family trips it was always headed down the highway with all the windows rolled up, I'm sure it looked like a Chic and Chong movie when they stopped the car and let us out for air. LOL so I guess that's why I didn't ever take up the habit. But I still spend my money in the casino and most of the time I can find a table are machine that is okay without any issues.

Now you know the rules, you can decide whether or not you want to play the game.

If you don't like the rules and still want to play the game, the only one to blame is looking at you in the mirror.

People still smoke on their balconies all the time. So if you have a smoker next to you and they smoke on their balcony, be prepared for their smoke and cigarette butts to end up on your side of the partition. We just got off Celebration last week and the people in the balcony next to us were smokers. So be prepared for that possibility.

Some of y'all must be terrible at a back yard BBQ

The smell of ribs and brisket on a grill is completely different from cigarette smoke. One smells terrific and the other...not so much.

Matter of opinion, no?

Same as weed smell or burning sage.

Carnival Cruise Line is dedicated to the safety of all guests and crew. We want all our guests to have a safe, fun and memorable vacation.

Smoking is a fire and safety hazard on a ship. Consequently, it is strictly limited to specific exterior deck areas.  All guests are expected to adhere to the following safety guidelines:

  • All staterooms and suite accommodations, including outside balconies, are NON-SMOKING. This policy applies to all forms of smoking, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaporizers, electronic cigarettes and marijuana.
  • Carnival recognizes that some state and local governments in the U.S., and in the destinations we visit, might allow marijuana use. However, Carnival Cruise Line follows U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances.
  • Any violation of this policy will result in a $500 charge, per violation, posted on the guest’s Sail & Sign® account and may also result in the disembarkation of all guests in the stateroom.
  • Guests who are disembarked for violating our policy will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of their unused cruise fare will be provided. Additionally, they may be prohibited from sailing with Carnival Cruise Line in the future.

Casino rules: There is no smoking in the casino unless seated and playing. It is not allowed at the casino bar or in the entire area when closed.

Our smoking policy is included in Carnival's Cruise Ticket ContractFollow the link for ship specific smoking areas.

In keeping with U.S. federal law, the minimum age to purchase tobacco products is 21. This policy is for U.S.-based itineraries/ships only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if a guest is caught smoking in a stateroom or balcony?

They will be assessed a $500 charge, per violation, on their Sail & Sign® account. Information on this charge is included in Section 8 of Carnival’s Cruise Ticket Contract. The assessment of this charge does not allow a guest to continue smoking in his/her stateroom. If a guest is found to be in violation of our smoking policy, all guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel and risk not being allowed to sail on Carnival in the future.  Guests will be responsible for all financial charges and expenses to return home, and no refund of unused cruise fare will be provided.

What should guests do if they smell tobacco in areas where smoking is not allowed, or marijuana in any area?

Guests who are concerned about other guests violating our smoking policy should contact our onboard Guest Services team, so we can address the situation. This will help avoid uncomfortable situations between guests.

What if a guest has a letter from a doctor saying that they are allowed to use marijuana for medicinal and/or therapeutic purposes?  Why is that prohibited?

Marijuana on our ships is not allowed. While certain CBD products used for medicinal purposes may be legal in the US, they are not legal in all the ports we visit and therefore are also considered prohibited items. Guests will need to consult with their physician for other suitable alternatives.

Depends where you are on Deck 6…I booked a balcony room on Horizon which happened to be above the smoking area and the smell was pretty bad…won’t make that mistake again

Where are the smoking areas on Horizon and what cabin were you in that was bad? I booked a cloud 9 balcony on deck 12 for our anniversary and this smoking issue isn’t even anything I thought of!

I had a cabin on Deck 6 right above the outside smoking area on Deck 5 which I had not realized when I was booking. I copied and pasted the following from the Carnival website…hope this helps

Thanks for the info! I’m on deck 12 port forward and  I see that the deck 11 smoking area is on starboard aft-so shouldn’t be an issue…whew! 😁

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow great question! Going now to check my location of our deck 6 cabin. LOL I hate cigarette smoke. Makes my eyes burn and I cough. (could be the formaldehyde who knows. Maybe just the ammonia or lead or one of the 100's of other toxins....🙃) I just avoid the area and leave them be. However, if I'm on my balcony that would suck.

If you have smoking neighbors you just have your cabin steward come into your room go onto balcony and see or smell it and the cabin will be warned and fined if they don't comply.  I've have had to do it many times!  Some of us paid for non smoking balconies and should be able to use them!

I booked our first Carnival cruise last night, a forward starboard balcony on deck 8. I am worried about the smoke smell... Will it travel far enough upward from deck 5 or down from Deck 11?
