Geiranger, Norway RIB Boat Fjord Safari

Recommended Posts

Hello!

We will be in Geiranger, Norway in July (2 adults and an 11 year old). We are very much interested in doing a RIB boat tour.

Has anyone done a RIB boat tour in Geiranger and if so can you please recommend a company? There are a few online but I always like to hear suggestions from actual people who used the company and can provide a good review and suggestion.

Thanks.

I did the RIB in Geiranger in 2017 and it was fantastic.  You can get so close to the waterfalls that you can almost reach out and touch them.  I used Geiranger Fjordservice.  https://www.geirangerfjord.no/geirangerfjord-rib-7

Thank you for your suggestion. I came across this company in my search.

I do have a few questions…How far from the cruise terminal was this company? Did you book in the morning or afternoon? I was thinking of doing this in the afternoon after doing another tour. Was the boat really fast?  Did you get soaked? Thanks

There really isn't a cruise terminal in Geiranger.  Geiranger Fjordservice is almost next door to the dock where the tender drops you off.  They gave us waterproof, windproof suits to wear, but we did not get soaked.  The boat goes pretty fast and I was nervous about that before we went, but this excursion was the thrill of my trip.  We went in the afternoon after going up Mt. Dalsnibba in the morning.

Thank you for answering all of my questions! I’m definitely going to book it as it sounds thrilling and a once in a lifetime experience!! I’m sure my husband and 11 year old son would LOVE it! Did you prebook the tour online?

I did prebook online.  Lots of people think this is a real thrill and will book it.  Your son will have a blast!   We did a RIB in Eidfjord as well and that was equally thrilling.  It was great doing donuts out on the fjord!

@Ladybug18, I had to double-check that I didn't write this post as I'll also be in Geiranger in July with my spouse and 11-year old.. lol.  Now this post makes me want to look into doing a RIB boat tour as well, perhaps for Eidfjord as we already booked the panorama bus tour for Geiranger.

Thanks @dfish for sharing this info!

@queen_kathy1 HAHA!! Which cruise are you on? We are on the NCL Prima. We are going to do a tour in the AM and then we will do the RIB boat tour later in the afternoon since we are in Geiranger until 10PM. Maybe you can do both the Panorama Bus tour and the RIB boat in Geiranger? Did you book the bus tour via the cruise line or independently?

@Ladybug18ah nice ship - lots to keep your son busy!!  we are sailing 14 days with HAL to the fjords, very different ship experience, hopefully not too boring for my daughter 🙂

We never book excursions through the cruiseline, way cheaper to book on our own - https://www.geirangerfjord.no/panorama-exclusive-bus

Yes I spotted the RIB boat is only 1hr so we may do both excursions our day there!

@queen_kathy1 we were suppose to do the Norwegian fjords on HAL last summer but cancelled due to covid. We had the same worry that our son would be bored sailing HAL.

Thanks for the link. That is the company I have been eyeing for the tours in Geiranger. We figure we can do both tours in one day as they aren’t all day tours and it gives us a chance to see the fjord up high and up close in the water.

@dfish just curious...do you remember what time you booked your RIB tour? I know you said you did it after your other booked tour. Thanks

In 2017 we did the bus trip to Mt. Dalsnibba in the morning and the RIB in the afternoon.  Both were through Geiranger Fjordservice and we got a discount for booking two excursions.

In 2022 we only did the Panoramic bus tour to Mt. Dalsnibba and then the overlook up the Eagle Road.  It was too long to work in both, so we did the RIB in Eidfjord instead.

dfish, could you tell me how much the 1 hour RIB boat in Geiranger would be in US currency, thanks.

@fishman620 The RIB boat in Geiranger according to the website is NOK 595 per adult. That is about $57. Children are cheaper, NOK 395 which is about $38.

Thanks, Ladybug18.  I had no idea since it has been so long.  I do know it is a fraction of the cost of a ship excursion.

We did this RIB tour in 2016 with our daughters who were 11 and 13 at the time. One thing I really enjoyed was being down low on the fjord. It makes it more spectacular. Be aware that it isn’t an hour of tearing up the fjord. The fast spurts we’re interspersed with stories about the mysteries and history of the fjord. We got very close to the Seven Sisters Waterfall.

We had booked the tour for mid afternoon as we went hiking for around 5 hours in the morning. We came back to the ship for lunch and then straight back off for the RIB boat tour which is right at the dock. Definitely book direct - our cruise line offered the tour at much higher prices and really you could not miss the meeting point. I would definitely go for it - it was very memorable.

@Scottishclover thank you so much for your response! I think our 11 year old son will really enjoy this excursion. I figured it wasn’t going to be an hour of tearing it up out on the fjord which is ok by me. I really want to get up close and personal with the fjord.

Do you happen to remember roughly what time you booked the RIB tour? We are going to head back to the ship to have lunch and then head back out on the tender to go on the RIB tour. We will be doing a tour @ 9:30AM and will be done @ 12:30.

We have just booked the RIB Gergainger with P&I for Sept. Is it safe to book directly with the RaiB companies as it's over twice the amount with a P&O and looking at the T & C's it doesn't look like they cover for much more than not sailing away without you. Any advice would be appreciated

I think it was either 2 or 3 pm. There were 2 RIBs that went out at the same time. I should say we were not tendered, we were on the Disney Magic and it was connected to the floating Seawalk so it was quick to return to the ship and come back off again.

Do not book with the cruise line. These companies are very reliable. It takes minutes to walk from the pier to the RIB meeting point and I thought it was absurd what the cruise line was charging for effectively escorting you for a few minutes walk to a boat shed.

Thank you Scottishclover that was my thoughts. I thought we would get better protection booking with P & O but it look like they just charge you for making the booking on your behalf. Are there different companies that do the RIB in Gergainger or is it just the one company?

Sorry another question how long does it take to get off the ship? Would I be better not booking an early slot?

Thank you

@Scottishclover thank you. We were thinking of booking a 3PM RIB boat tour but we will have to tender so I’m not sure how long that will take to get to and from the ship. Our ship arrives at 8am and now I’m wondering if doing the 9:30AM tour is doable with having to tender.

The Disney Magic is a wonderful ship. We sailed on her in Europe years ago.

If anyone is still on this thread, are you able to tell me how jerky the RIB boat is?  I get that it goes fast, and does donuts etc, which is great, but my husband has some back issues and jerky movements could potentially put him in spasm.  He'd probably be totally fine, but just wanted to know if it is or isn't a jerky ride with sudden turns, as if it is he'd probably skip it and do one of the slow boats on his own.

We are just back from June 19th trip in Gerainger.

We choose Boneseye, amazing tour company!

Our skipper was a local who owns one of the farms in the Fjord.
She had some great stories.

We must have lucked out because it was only 4 of us on the RIB. We booked the 1st boat out.

This looks amazing ... I would have thought "No need to do RIB boat since we just came up the fjord on our cruise ship." But no - still worth doing?  Anyone go on this and afterward think "Meh, not so great. We just saw the fjord?"
