Any suggestions of things to do at this port in RI. We are not really interested in the mansions. The cliff walk sounds interesting but how do you get there from the tender drop off? any suggestions of activities welcome.

We just stroll and maybe do some window shopping along the main strip.

Also we like to lunch at a all time favorite called The Red Parrot.

But mostly in the post we have just strolled since it's the day before disembarkation in NYC.....

Rarely get it in the middle of a voyage.

It's possible one or more of these attractions will interest you:

Touro Synagogue; The oldest synagogue in the US

The International Tennis Hall of Fame

The Audrain Automobile Musem

You can walk to the Cliff Walk or take the trolley or a cab/uber

Since we arrived on a Sunday, we walked to St. Mary Catholic Church to attend Mass and then continued on to the start of the Cliff Walk.  From the map below, you can see that the walking distance is approximately 1.3 miles.  After completing the Cliff Walk, the distance from the other end of the walk to the port is approximately 2.5 miles.  So we ordered up an Uber for the trip back.

Hope this helps

I'll second either of these. Newport also has a great dining/drinking scene that can make for a fun afternoon. Easy to walk along the wharf and pop in and out of places. Some favorites are the water front bar/restaurant at Forty1 Degrees North Hotel, The Black Pearl on the wharf, and the lawn at Castle Hill Inn (you'll want a quick Uber) is stunning.

I can see my son smiling. Red Parrot was one of his favorite places when he was based in Newport with the Navy. Plus Newport is where he met his now-wife. 🙂

If Newport itself does not have much of interest to you, then you could spend the day in the larger city of Providence. From the Gateway transportation center, immediately north of Perrotti Park where tenders leave passengers, bus route 60 goes directly into Providence. About every 30 minutes, travel time about 1 hour 15 minutes, $2.00 each way (half-fare for elderly and disabled). http://www.ripta.com/routes/60

  • 5 weeks later...

My husband and I will be in Newport at the end of August for our cruise, and we were looking at the Jamestown-Newport hop-on hop-off ferry, which stops at Jamestown Village, Rose Island Lighthouse, Fort Adams, Ann St. Pier, and Perrotti Park.  If it's a nice weather day, being out on the bay could be enjoyable.  Some of the stops may be of interest for exploration.
