We were hoping to take the train into the City Centre and explore on our own rather than do a shore excursion (maybe do a hop-on, hop-off bus or a walking tour),

The Dublin HoHo bus is well-worth it. This is not always true (in other cities). We stayed about a week and used the HoHo to get many places, sometimes missing the last bus of the day (Guinness Storehouse looking at you) and hailing a cab for the trip back to center.

ETA: this was a few years ago, Colin may be able to add some details, like the time a circuit takes. @VMax1700

A circuit takes approx 1h 45 mins to 2 hours.

For those arriving to Dun Laoghaire it is possible to pick up the green HoHo bus beside the train station and do the tour.  A ticket for the Dart train to return to Dun Laoghaire is included.
