American Ground Roasted Coffee

American Coffee Producers have a problem roasting coffee beans.

The beans are harvested in the tropics and placed in canvas bags for shipping.

It turns out that cockroaches really like coffee beans, so they go along for the ride.

When the bags of coffee beans arrive in America, they must be roasted.

Removing or killing the cockroaches in the canvas bags is nearly impossible.

Killing them would require poisons that would contaminate the coffee.

 

So the coffee companies roast the beans and the roaches together.

Then they are ground up and placed in tins for sale.

The average ground roasted coffee in America contains 13% roasted cockroach.

This increases the protein content of American roasted ground coffee beans.

I wonder if it affects the taste?

ROFL Brucemuzz.  I will confess to only buying Lavazza (carton with 6-Kilo bags) whole beans.  I have never noticed any cockroach parts, but than again!  Come to think of it, quite a few cruise lines get their coffee from US suppliers and they are already roasted/ground.  One wonders what is really in those large coffee vats we find in the Lido :).  

 

For those buying the ground cockroaches with their coffee,  I wonder if they have the basis for a law suit since the net weight of coffee is not accurate.

Interesting, but not surprising.
I have a rule of thumb when it comes to American Coffee (and Pizza for that matter).

 

Ask yourself one simple question "Would an Italian drink (or eat) this"?

Every time I hear the words Starbucks or Domino's mentioned, its time to ask the question.

And even our own homegrown major brand, Costa, is now American owned. Probably still too soon to tell if the quality will be adversely affected, although my guess is that it's only a matter of time.

I very rarely use Costa and if I do it’s normal that I have a Cortado. It was recommended to me by an  Italian friend who knew his coffee and I’ve stuck with it. It is also easier on the bladder than some of the fish bowl size mugs they serve.

 

By rule of thumb I try to stick to Italian brands or bespoke local roasters who are really good.

 

The two best brands I have ever drunk are Britt in Costa Rica and Meinl in Austria.

I brought home good supplies each time but can’t justify online purchases as the carriage costs are scandalous.

I use Cafédirect Fairtrade Machu Picchu Whole Bean Arabica Coffee, and grind the beans myself. I also buy the odd bag of other specialist beans if the mood takes me.

Not too enamoured for Italian style coffee.
