After that I am ready for a break from the airports. Fortunately four of my next five cruises I'm driving to. I will be flying to Miami in April for an ABC on Horizon.

Another that is on my list.

My homeport is Galveston and I think I have been to just about everywhere possible from there.  I wish that there were longer cruises from Galveston so I could explore more places without having to fly. I cruise mainly for destinations, not ships.  I despise flying.  I keep telling my husband that we should move to Florida so we could drive to all their cruise ports.  Maybe some day.

We live about 15 minutes from Port Canaveral.  We no longer cruise out of any other port. Reading things like Saint Greg's difficulties only reinforces our choice LOL.

Yeah my first 10 cruises were from New Orleans and Galveston. It got old and I had to start flying around. At least jubilee is coming. If you can’t get excited about the ports, it helps to have a new ship.

At some point you run out of places to go from Florida as well. I’m getting close.

Absolutely! We're going to Alaska partly because I've seen most all of the Caribbean ad nauseam and that's where you can get to from a Florida port other than a TA and we unfortunately don't get that kind of vacation time to use all at once.  We always said we would do Alaska when we got old. I guess late 50's is old.

And airlines.

Think anyone that travels a bit knows that pooh happens. I remember traveling form Ireland to England I missed a connection to the US. She could get me to Vancouver BC. I told her that was not good enough. She told me "You can just rent a car to get home."  I told her I was not driving over 300 miles to get home.

Now imagine an Irish person arranging a business trip from Ireland to the US and an American Express travel agent in the UK saying London to Phoenix..  I’m left saying “and how do I get to London? “ this while I was working in an office within spitting distance of Shannon Airport which has US preclearance.

I had to go e to c. You follow b/c signs and end up in b. But then you go down two floors below b and b’s luggage claim and fast walk it under b then back up stairs to c

kind of feels like you’re entering a casino down there.

I remember that walkway… I went through it in 1994 and it looks the exact same!!

you have my sympathies for the travel travails… I’ve traveled to the USA from Ireland over 20 times on a mix of work and leisure and have had a variety of “fun” experiences.

ABC - ?  I’ve never heard that term.  Google says it means Aruba Bonaire Curaçao?

I know you mentioned your ABC cruise next year but I’m not sure what other Southern Caribbean islands you have gone to so far. If you’re going to have to fly anyway, I highly recommend cruises out of San Juan (a relatively short distance flight with minimal time change) . A lot of different ports from Florida ports. I loved Dominica and Grenada especially and they have a lot of varied scenery to offer. Ships out of San Juan routinely hit St. Lucia, St. Kitts, Antigua, and Barbados. I’m hoping to hit Martinique in the not too distant future. They are often very port intensive cruises.

I have done San Juan, St. Kitts, St. Maarten. The one cruise I was looking at with CruiseNext was Viva out of the DR hitting some of those Southern Caribbean ports I haven't been to. But I did not purchase CruiseNext.

My favorite military refueling stop was at the airport in Shannon. It was about 2am. Everything was closed. But they opened one bar. We packed it and drank a lot of Guinness. I was....19.

We have decided not to stay in Barcelona overnight after the cruise next April.I’m wondering if we’ll be lucky enough to get one of the 11:00 am flights (which is doable..we did it last time we ended in Barcelona.) or a 27 hour flight to get home. It’s a NCL crap shoot but right now it saves us 1500. I check airline prices all the time and so far it hasn’t changed.

I doubt the cruise line is going to book you an 11am flight on debarkation day. They'll probably stick you with a late one. Before I booked my Barcelona flight with Carnival the best deal for me was going to be Air Portugal.

@Saint Greg Now that you have done Alaska twice, what month did you prefer for the weather.

I don't know if my answer would be fair because I probably got a warmer than usual week in May and a colder than usual week in August. I had better weather in May but two weeks ago they got up into the 70's in Icy Strait. But different things come with both of the times of year. May you may see more ice/snow but not the glacier calving I saw at Hubbard last week. In May fewer bears but more eagles. That's something I really didn't mention. I saw a ton of eagles last year.  I only saw three this year. One of the guides told me that's because the eagles are feeding on the salmon now. Maybe there's a time in the middle when there's a good balance of everything. The glacier walk I went on is better when it's colder because you can go inside ice caves. This time of year it's too dangerous.
