We booked with MSC for Dec of this year, and may have to cancel (which is truly a bummer)...if we cancel before final payment is due, will we get the deposit returned?  Not sure how MSC handles this type of thing.

It depends on what you booked and what experience level you booked. 

 

In most cases, you would get your deposit refunded but if you booked Yacht Club, you would (probably) not get your deposit refunded.

Assuming you booked in the US.  As stated only Yacht Club bookings officially are not refundable, however in that case MSC offers limited flexibility to move the sail date or itinerary.  For other cabin class bookings the last deposit refund date depends on length of sailing.

If you cancel before final payment and are not in the YC or on a World Cruise, then you will get your deposit refunded. If you cancel after final payment, the amount you will be refunded is dependent on when you cancel and how long your sailing is, as shown in the tables above.

Not for US sailings as far as I know.
