Rare WantedOnVoyage Posted September 29, 2023 #29 Share Posted September 29, 2023 Do note, too... this is Carnival we're talking about in many aspects so literally the entertainers are cycled through Cunard, Princess and P&O and exchanged at common ports. So if you liked the comedian on ARVIA (god I hate that name... what on earth does it even mean) you will like him or her as much on QUEEN VICTORIA atlhough possibly not the third or fourth time. It's uncanny... I can never remember a single joke, even the good ones, within 30 minutes of leaving the show. Maybe that's why they keep coming back with the same ones, over and over. Apparently Arvia means from the seashore, which seems fair enough, though it’s not a Latin word I’ve ever come across, nor has Lewis and Short’s Dictionary. So probably late Latin.

I tend to remember the bad jokes. I don't know if they're quite "tribute bands," but last year on QM2, they had a group of women who call themselves "Heat Wave" (after the Martha & the Vandellas song) and they did lot of "girl group" songs. That was the northbound leg of the Canada cruise. Southbound, for equal time, they had a group of men doing the male equivalent. Both groups were fantastic.

Heat Wave was on Elizabeth on her Panama transit. The male group that followed was The Four Ds. Both were phenomenal, would be hard pressed to pick the better of the two groups.

Can’t remember which ship and when but I have seen Four D ‘s and enjoyed them. One of the best acts I enjoyed recently was the two chaps playing the one piano. Can’t remember their names. Thanks this was very helpful. Looks like it might be hard to find a late breakfast onboard? Since you filled out the form for Canadian customs in Victoria does that mean you didn't have to do customs in Vancouver during disembarkation? I would love to try Cunard for the classy feal and good food but not sure as the entertainment really doesn't seem to match my taste either not into sitting listening to live music or dancing. So probably late Latin. Neither has the TLL, hence neither classical nor late Latin. If you saw somewhere that Arvia is supposed to mean “from the seashore,” it is probably a corruption of arva, -orum “fields,” also used poetically (e.g., Vergil Aeneid 1.246, 2.209) for the seashore. But my guess would be that it’s simply a made-up name that tested well with a focus group.

Yes, they gave that derivation, though I’m not sure it is normal for the Romans to go round sticking random letter ‘i’s in words like that in second declension plurals. There’s no adjective arvius, -a, -um derived from arva; on the contrary, arva itself is a substantive use of an original adjective arvus, -a, -um “arable, cultivated/-table.” Perhaps a Google or Wiki translation bot at work? In any case, it’s a name made up by or for Carnival.

I always add 'brown sauce' to the list for my crispy bacon open 'toastie'. I can't imagine brown sauce, or ketchup for that matter, is a QG speciality, 🙂

You can make all sorts of words and pronounceable non-words from it.

We have taken the QE Alaska cruise three times and the arrival in Vancouver was as easy as it can be. We never spoke with a border official and simply walked off the ship. There were no formalities in Victoria either.

Victoria was so easy that when we got to Vancouver, I didn't remember we had already done the entry into Canada. I was surprised when the bellman walked me right out to the door. It's down to scheduling as to when they perform so it's not every cruise. Thank you for the correction. Hopefully no-one will book a cruise on the strength of there being acrobats and magicians on board though given their lack of regularity.

No problem at all. 🙂 We wouldn't book a cruise on the strength of any entertainment [apart from a specialist cruise such as Big Band or classical Music cruises] as it doesn't figure that highly on our daily routine but to some folk, it's important and it's always a good idea to get facts straight. I would say one in three of our cruises have had acrobats hanging from a rope suspended from some stage ceiling contraption. I always hope it's strong enough.
