Tipping at Osanbashi Terminal

Tipping is an insult in Japan - no matter who is doing what for you.

Mysteriously disappearing luggage due to disgruntled Union Baggage Handlers is a North American thing.

The Japanese are too honest to let this sort of thing happen in their country.

The Honor system in Japan is still incredibly strong.

There are still many Japanese people who would be compelled to commit suicide for such an error.

You can leave your American Culture ideas behind when you visit Japan.

We know no tipping in Japan, but what about the baggage handlers at Osanbashi embarkation?  We usually tip to avoid mysterious departing luggage!

You are not dealing with the teamsters at Port Everglades.

We just returned from Japan.  Do not tip them.  Protection payments/tips are not required and yes, are an insult.

We've never felt safer and more confident in folks doing their job correctly (and with pride and care) as we experienced in Japan.

Correct, there is no tipping in Japan. BUT, we’re from Hawai’i, and always bring little packets of macadamia nuts for front desk, housekeeping, cab drivers and sometimes restaurant servers. The Japanese people love HawaiʻI, and our little gift is always appreciated.

When we arrive Osanbashi Port before we realized the luggages are gone!  Didn't even have a close encounter with the porters😂!   They are so efficient and fast.  Japanese takes their job as pride, so all we can say is Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu!

Tipping tour guides
Tours are the one exception to Japan's no-tipping policy, and most guides will accept a small gratuity if you offer it to them.

Yes, they will accept your tip (and might even smile) but in their mind they are thinking, "what a fool," or "another Ugly American who does not respect our culture."  The old saying of "when in Rome......" is a good policy with international travel,  Learn about the local culture (easily done online) and respect the local mores rather than trying to project your own culture.

Gifts of cash are common in Japan, the proper way is money in envelop, so not tipping.
