sowhat33 Posted December 28, 2023 #1 Share Posted December 28, 2023 Getting ready to board Star on way to Hawaii. A while back, some people were looking for a place to stay night before departure. I chose the Doubletree and have been quite satisfied. Room was clean, snd serviceable. Another cruiser was fine with room but disappointed with dining. Too expensive for too little. I highly recommend exploring some of the other dining options, some interesting local places that are much more interesting.
Baron Barracuda Posted December 28, 2023 #2 Share Posted December 28, 2023 Flew into LAX a day ahead of our Star sailing last month. Researched the two main San Pedro options but wasn't thrilled with mixed reviews on CC parent TripAdvisor. Ended up staying near LAX at Embassy Suites North and taking Uber to port the next morning. Airport hotels were cheaper with free airport shuttle and complimentary breakfast. Uber to port was around $55 including tip.
Mike07 Posted December 29, 2023 #3 Share Posted December 29, 2023 (edited) The San Pedro terminal is not in a terrible, but not Rodeo Dr. area of greater LA. It's probably easiest to stay around LAX. I'm not even sure if the Coast Guard has lodging down there. Edited December 29, 2023 by Mike07

San Pedro has 2 cruise ship berthing locations - World Cruise Centre Berths 91 - 93 and the Outer Harbour Berth # 46. If using Berth # 46, the Doubletree is well located for access to that berth, but has few retail/restaurant options in the local area. The Crowne Plaza is almost mid-way between both berthing locations and in addition to an in-house restaurant, has numerous options within a couple of blocks of the hotel. Prior to our World Cruise, we found the hotel open to negotiate room rates, when we had multiple pax from our cruise. We stayed 2 nights pre-cruise, having breakfast in the hotel and lunch/dinners at a local restaurant/pub.

It’s a long walk from Hertz to Berth 46😢 Edited December 31, 2023 by Clay Clayton
Baron Barracuda Posted December 31, 2023 #7 Share Posted December 31, 2023 (edited) We sailed from San Pedro on the Star back on 11/10. Final cruise docs indicated berth 46 but port of LA website said 93. Someone on our roll call contacted Viking twice, even elevating call to a a supervisor who swore it was 46. As our Uber from LAX drove to the port there was the Star - - - at 93. A number of people went to 46 and unhappily had to double back. When we disembarked 33 days later on 12/10 it was also at 93. It’s a long walk from Hertz to Berth 46😢 We had a nice embarkation at Berth 46 yesterday. We drove down from Hollywood (35 minutes-not a lot of traffic), had breakfast at “The Happy Diner” after “Egg & Omlette” had a line and no parking. It was as good if not better than E&O-highly recommend it. The Aztec omlette we shared was delicious! We then drove to the pier, dropped luggage, drove six minutes back to town, gassed and returned the car (Hertz makes it hard to find their location) then had a nice walk mostly along the marina back to the ship. It was a beautiful day so we enjoyed stretching our legs and strolling to our home for the next four months.
Jim Avery Posted January 7 #9 Share Posted January 7 Just to throw it in, while not in San Pedro, the Queen Mary Hotel in Long Beach is a blast of ocean liner history and is a short cab/uber ride from the Cruise terminal in San Pedro. While not the freshest hotel in the area it is interesting if you have never been around the Queen Mary.

We also tried to do the Spruce Goose, but they’d moved it without telling us. They also closed McDonnell Douglas after our trip, but I don’t think it was anything to do with me 😀

From the Doubletree, you can take an Uber or Lyft to Raffaelos Ristorante at 457 W 7th St., San Pedro 310-514-0900. Though I don't remember Lyft cost, it was reasonable for a good dining experience.
