Funchal toboggan ride

Recommended Posts

When we went there (as a cruise port-of-call) there was no significant line.

But I  googled to see if that was up-to-date, and the very first entry said "the best time to go is when there isn't a cruise ship in port".🙄

So there's your answer 😜

OK, so that's not a lot of help.

I can't find an official port website with a cruise ship schedule, so try a few of the cruisers' website like this one https://www.cruisetimetables.com/funchal-madeira-cruise-ship-schedule-2024.html#google_vignette

to see how busy your day is.

Other than that, usual advice is to go good & early or late in the day

Great fun

JB 🙂

We went DIY first thing after arriving in port in the morning.....no wait for the skylift.....but had to wait for it to open a few minutes.......then no wait for the toboggan ride...and it was a blast!

Enjoy it.

Agree with JB about the line (we have never seen a line).  Understand that the toboggan ride is a true tourist trap...but still fun.  The guys that push the toboggans do try to add to the fun...and they expect a nice tip (especially from Americans).  To us. the major problem with the toboggan is what happens at the end.  You are on the middle of a pretty steep hill and it is a strain on one's knees to walk down into the center of town.   Definitely one of those things folks need to do...ONCE.

We visited monte first and then did the ride after. Because after the ride you will probably want to go down back to Funchal instead of going back up. Though when we visited we didn't come by cruise (ie not a cruise port day I guess)

  • 2 weeks later...

Was in a taxi for a couple hour tour and the driver suggested the toboggan ride. We got there and the line had to be a couple hundred deep. Our driver said "follow me" and took us to the front of the line and we got in the next available toboggan. Felt weird with everyone waiting in line but could see this was the advantage of having a guide.

Like another poster said, "once was enough"!! Lots of fun but wouldn't dpi it again.

We were they last April. We were there when they opened and had approx 30 min wait. WE LOVED the whole experience ! Please do this... you won't regret it.

We took the Gondola up to the top [ amazing views] and walked the 2 min to the Ride.
