Harrisonkid Posted February 23 #1 Share Posted February 23 Just got an email (November sailing) that some port times have changed due to Apex sailing speeds...anyone know what's up or why the changes ?
dcbiker97 Posted February 23 #2 Share Posted February 23 It might be useful to post the itinerary. Sometimes there are new speed restrictions put in place due to whales, etc.

peterde Posted February 23 #5 Share Posted February 23 Norway has been passing a bunch of cruise ship regulations lately. most likely related to them. https://www.travelmarketreport.com/Destinations/articles/Norways-Svalbard-Archipelago-Sets-Strict-Cruise-Limits https://cleantechnica.com/2024/01/06/norway-moves-aggressively-to-curb-cruise-ship-emissions/amp/ https://www.cruisemapper.com/news/10056-norway-introduces-more-restrictions-cruise-ships
wrk2cruise Posted February 23 #6 Share Posted February 23 I got the changes for June/July Iceland and Norway. They cut one stop by 3 hrs (departing early) and the next day is just cruising? The OP's post is for a November cruise, I don't think that's Norway.

Guest Cable3232 Posted February 23 #8 Share Posted February 23 At least you go to all your stops; they changed one of our stops from the Fjords stops for Zeeburge.

Don’t know, but they do have a lot of sustainability initiatives going on, including reducing emissions. Maybe they’re trying to sail at more energy efficient speeds. Harrisonkid Posted February 23 Author #11 Share Posted February 23 Since my email notification is for a November Caribbean cruise , I'm starting to believe it might A Ship issue and not a nation's issue ...I guess time will tell
gerelmx Posted February 23 #12 Share Posted February 23 For Norway cruises only the Apex have speed restrictions or also the Silhouette have the reduced speed?
Rare PTC DAWG Posted February 23 #13 Share Posted February 23 Sounds like Norway wants out of the tourism business..fine by me.. Now go ask those poor souls that make a living at the ports off of cruise ship passengers..
ospreycruiser Posted February 23 #14 Share Posted February 23 Also received a similar email with adjusted port times for Apex September 7 Iceland and Scotland. Wondering if it is an engine issue.
Jumping Cruiser Posted February 23 #15 Share Posted February 23 (edited) Not just Norway, also for all Scandinavia cruises this year. Not a massive issue though, still plenty of time in each port. Edited February 23 by Jumping Cruiser
JBare Posted February 23 #16 Share Posted February 23 Got our notification for September in the Med, reduced some port visits by just 30 mins.
tscoffey Posted February 23 #17 Share Posted February 23 Same thing for May 2-15 Transatlantic. It is leaving an hour earlier from Bruges to Southampton. Must be some regulatory issue, rather than engine, or else the entire trip across the Atlantic would be affected.

I think it must be as only Apex appears to be affected so far and Celebrity seem secretive on the reason for the need for speed reduction.

cw2go Posted February 23 #20 Share Posted February 23 I just sailed Apex Feb 10th and it was a very rocky ship with relatively calm seas. I am not an engineer but after reading the above article, I speculate it's a stabilizer software issue? I noticed and mentioned several times throughout the sailing how much more the ship was swaying compared to our recent experience on The Beyond in rougher seas. We even noticed the ship would speed up and slow down randomly, the crew even mentioned how much more movement they were feeling compared to normal. So maybe they're attempting to slow Apex down enough to keep her sailing till dry dock March 2025 Just a wild a** guess! Patty
gerelmx Posted February 23 #21 Share Posted February 23 I think there is some problem with the APEX, if they were speed restrictions, why hasn't the Silhouette modified its itineraries? Yes, the Fjords and the Baltic are very similar in both ships.
Rare Lena11033 Posted February 23 #22 Share Posted February 23 Its a little bit worrying I have two cruises with Apex this year, although one of them I haven't received a email for modified itinerary yet
MMMCruiser Posted February 24 #23 Share Posted February 24 Same for my 7nt fjord cruise in July. It wasn't much of a change (at least no ports were changed) but I'm curious to know more.

Patty I really hope you're wrong because having a less stable ship in the North Sea is not a good idea. Not doubting your experience at all here, just hoping for the best.
Rare NMTraveller Posted February 24 #25 Share Posted February 24 Is Apex the ship with the noisy cabins? Perhaps they are slowing it down to minimize the noise?
