gottagoacruzn Posted April 12 #1 Share Posted April 12 Hi guys, don't know if pilots who bring the ships in has ever been asked before, so here goes. As those who are in the know, what does the pilots day consist of, as to bringing in the ships, does a pilot after docking, do they go back to the office, to work some more, then come back to the ship to sail out, an when they depart from Hwy 19, down there on deck 2, can passengers watch as they board the pilot boat, then when they are on the ship, what do him & the captain talk about, business I'm sure, besides the pilot & captain, who are all on the bridge, are there any women who are pilots, don't worry am not gonna apply for the job, don't think you would want me as a pilot. What are the benefits & pitfalls, an after bein a pilot, would you change jobs, an go back to workin in the stores, or any other job? Got to thinkin about the pilot today, an thought maybe someone here would know. Thanks. Virginia

Rare LittleMissMagic Posted April 12 #3 Share Posted April 12 I'm not a maritime pilot, but your question sparked curiosity, so I did a little digging.... This is a little dated (2008), but I think it will give some more insight on a Pilot's day - https://cms3.revize.com/revize/americanpilots/A_Career_as_a_Ship_Pilot.pdf There are women pilots. Here's an interesting article about Jane Stone, Commercial Marine Pilot in the UK - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/meet-one-only-two-female-commerical-marine-pilots-uk-john-ferguson-/ Also Davinia Monclus on the River Medway - https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/whats-on/rewriting-women-into-maritime-history/online-exhibitions/davinia-monclus#null If you're interested in learning more, Maritime SheEO is a group empowering women in the maritime industry - https://maritimesheeo.com/

Rare 1025cruise Posted April 13 #5 Share Posted April 13 I would presume that as soon as the ship is docked, the pilot leaves to take another ship out.
Capt_BJ Posted April 13 #6 Share Posted April 13 there's not many ports where there's so much traffic that the pilot turns around immediately for another ship. Some, but not typical. Port Canaveral for example can have days with no movements at all, and one in or one out is not at all unusual. Another aspect to consider is the pilot MAY BE onboard for DAYS. On a Norway fjords cruise or an Alaska inland passage cruise the ship is sailing inland waters for days and typically law requires a pilot on board all the time ... on the bridge. In this case sometimes it is a pilot TEAM so they trade off 'the watch'. In Alaska the ship can bounce between Canada and US waters during a transit and BOTH pilots will be on board .... In a place like San Fran there will be MULTIPLE pilot 'jurisdictions' you might say ... An ocean pilot, a bay pilot and if going to Richmond or Sacramento yet additional pilots not to mention special docking pilots are often in play. It gets complicated!
