More mechanical issues for Carnival Vista

This situation also makes me wonder about the Vista class ships being they have all had speed/propulsion issues in the past.  I like this class of ship, and they have awesome itineraries, but their continued issues make me leery of booking again!

 

I feel bad for the people that were impacted this week thinking they were going on a Southern Caribbean cruise and ended up in the Bahamas.  It is disappointing for sure, especially for those that might not cruise often and were looking forward to the southern islands.

We were on this sailing of the Vista and feel like the $400 obc and 25% future cruise credit was fair but we had our adult daughter in our cabin with us and the FCC is per individual and I don't think she will have the chance to use it.  Wish they would allow it to be transferred especially if in the same cabin. Although I think they should have given the 'opt out' before people boarded, it really wasn't going to matter to us - vacations planned, summer school break to work around and money sunk in a flight/hotel already.  I can say that I think they did the best they could given that they got us to 4 replacement ports (2 being Princess Cay and Half Moon Cay both of which I enjoy) and I know it had to be a tough week for the crew (many passengers were being less than kind).   We have the Horizon booked for almost the exact same cruise in October and hope that one is a 'go'. Fingers crossed!

I'd say it isn't a fair cost comparison at all. ABC islands cost more to get to, for example, than the Bahamian destinations. The length of the trip overall is greater than the Bahamas, which you can get to in a few hours from Miami. Carnival is saving a bunch of $$ not doing the ABC's.

You really think Carnival is coming out on top that last cruise by not sailing to the ABCs?! (completely ignoring the fact the ship wasn't capable). the cost of the repair alone probably would wipe out any profits that were to be made.

In addition to the financial implications, having to deal with the unhappy people onboard last week AND the ones who got off and took to social media to gripe about it is no picnic for Carnival either.

I'm wager they lost money on this one. Supposedly about 700 people left the ship after the announcement was made (combine that with the OBC and FCC and I can't see how they would have come out ahead).

No, I don't think Carnival is coming out on top in this situation, but the original question was "does an ABC cruise cost more per day than a Bahamian cruise" and the answer is yes.

 

From the guests perspective, it's also not a fair comparison. The "value" to a guest of an ABC cruise vs. a Bahamian cruise is completely different as well.

Actually, I was looking at the 2 cruises and it was within $10/pp for the same month with no major holidays.

so is this likely why when the wife and I were on Panorama, we docked with a tug at long beach? This was some bit ago and didn't think much of it then, but this was right around the time Panorama was having propulsion issues. I remember reading a month or two after we returned from the cruise that the ship had propulsion issues again.

 

It was back in November 2021, and something about the max cruise speed was the issue

I would be incredibly annoyed at this. Vista has had this problem for several years. It JUST got out of dry dock if Im not mistaken. I know thats mainly hotel upgrades but come on. Carnival….get it together. Take the ship out of service and fix it once and for all. Its negligent at this point.

You make it sound so simple 🤦‍♂️ You really think Carnival wants to be making constant Azipod repairs on these ships?! The repair bills, lost revenue, FCC, refunds and OBC is something they really don't care about when they're 30bil in debt!

This is like blaming the mechanic for an alternate failure on your car after taking it in for an oil change.

Was it Azipod repairs? The issue was an inability to cruise at higher speeds. I don't know that the azipods are used for higher speed cruising. I thought they were used to facilitate maneuvers such as turning, docking, etc. I was under the impression that the current problem was with the main propulsion system.

A person on our Carnival Vista - Port Canaveral FB page posted 53minutes ago that the Vista is currently doing 19 knots. 23 knots is its maximum speed.

I am on the ship now. There have been no announcements about the repairs or of any problems. We seem to be doing fine so far on this trip. But on Friday I'll be on the Behind the Fun tour and I'll see what they say during the tour.

Azipods provide propulsion and steering as an "all in 1" unit. Ships with Azipods do not have your traditional propellers and rudder. You're probably thinking of thrusters.

Heald said in a quote response they were going to work on the mechanical issues as well. I also never said it was easy. I'm saying 5 years is entirely too long to operate a faulty ship.

For the fated 8/10/24 sailing we were generally running around 8 knots for most of our entire trip -  I think we got up to 12 once after our extended stay in Freeport during which they were doing repairs, but that was short lived and we went right back to 8.  However, the next stops were always very close so no need to go fast.....

Imagine how annoyed Carnival is. It affects both their bottom line and their reputation of reliability.
