What hotel did you book in Sydney?

I agree with Globalizer. Get a new TA as yours is clueless!

Kings Cross is Sydney's "red light" district and the seediest part of town.

It is going through a gentrification process and it's worth going to visit to see the area, any TA that would recommend it as a good part of town is a bad TA. (unless you're more of the "edgier" type and your TA knows you prefer to stay in funkier and still-not-gentrified parts of a city)

In Sydney, I've stayed in the Sheraton on the Park, The Four Seasons and the InterContinental.

Hi all:

Has anyone stayed at the Russell Hotel in Sydney? Or does anyone know of it? It's at 143a George Street, The Rocks. Other than that, the Holiday Inn Old Sydney looks reasonable also.

Snowbird

The Russell is a popular budget hotel. I've never stayed there but have walked by it.

George Street is one of the main streets in that part of Sydney, so it's in a very good location.

Hi guys

I was born and bred in Sydney but haven't lived there for some time - although my wife and I visit regularly and I also go there on business.

When we stay in Sydney it is usually at one of the fine hotels around Darling Harbour - most recently the Novotel. The Ibis is next door and offers similar style at a lower tariff - they are of the same chain (Accor)

Darling Harbour is more than a good walk to Circular Quay (where the cruise liners berth) - so you need to catch a taxi - either one with 4 wheels or one with a propellar. Both convenient and plentiful.

Other hotels mentioned are fine - it depend on how long you are staying and what you want to do. Hotels in and around the Rocks area tend to be a little more expensive than elsewhere, but it is a great area and very close to the Cruise dock. Sorry I don't know The Russell but I see from their web site (www.therussell.com.au) that it is a Boutique hotel very close to the harbour foreshores.

I think I would prefer the Holiday Inn

I agree with other posts about Kings Cross. It is sleazy - always has been always will be and I would never recommend anyone stay there.

cheers

Star City for us. I was born and bred in Sydney as well. We travel there each year for the Football. (Go the Tigers) Can't go past Star City for everything. Food, Location, Tours, Accomodation and.....Casino, Sports bar, Shopping etc......

They have a seafood buffet to die for. In my sons words "unlimited prawnage"

My ship was supposed to dock at Circular Quay, but ended up docking at Darling Harbour. I booked a hotel steps from Circular Quay, took a taxi to my ship at Darling Harbour. I stayed at the Four Seasons on a package deal that included breakfast and a welcome package.

We booked, and stayed in 2 weeks ago, a great bed & breakfast, Bed & Breakfast Sydney Harbour, which is actually a small inn with private bathrooms, etc. 9 rooms, great host, fabulous breakfast. It is located next door to the Shangri-La in The Rocks area of Sydney, which is walkable to everything, and in the middle of a very cool area full of shops and restaurants. All historic buildings that have been redone. We stayed in the Philip room, very nice.

I stayed in The Russell for a week prior to my cruise a couple of years ago. Loved the location, you are right at the ferry terminal, the bridge and the Opera House. Staff was very friendy but beware of the STEEP stairs heading up to the lobby. I was there late Nov and they were just setting up Christmas decorations on the nearby streets. Thre were some nightly free concerts and a flea market/craft fair on the weekend. Loads of neat little restaurants around. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
