Krazy Kruizers Posted November 17, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2006 The evening we were in Curacao no one told us not to expect any fire works. As we were leaving at 10 PM quite a few people were lined along the shore line and many of us on the ship were waiting for them -- nothing happened. So the next day I asked around and was told that Curacao has decided to stop them. The next time we were there we asked some of the locals why the fireworks were stopped. Someone thought it could be because of the new Renaissance Resort and Casino that is being built right at the pier area. It is to open in November 2007. They better start husling if they want to get done on time. One of the merchants at the Rif Fort did flash their big flood lights as we were leaving. kryos Posted November 17, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 17, 2006 The evening we were in Curacao no one told us not to expect any fire works. I believe it was on this board that someone told me Curacao did not have the fireworks any longer. I know that I was aware we wouldn't have any before my cruise last month. arzz Posted November 17, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 17, 2006 We, too, missed the fireworks on the October 14 Volendam cruise. On board they were vague as to why the fireworks were stopped. Thanks for asking. It all makes me sad as Curacao has always been a favorite port and the fireworks have been like "frosting on the cake."
elmorejj Posted November 17, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 17, 2006 I wonder if HAL contributed to the cost of the fireworks, and this is another cost cutting idea?........jean:cool:
mafig Posted November 17, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 17, 2006 I was looking forward to them, but had read from the previous cruisers that they were no longer doing them. We were at the bbq on Curacoa night and asked an officer if they were going to have them and he said no.He left in such a hurry that my dh asked "what'd you say to him?" :D
Krazy Kruizers Posted November 17, 2006 Author #7 Share Posted November 17, 2006 From what we were told by James Deering, HAL does not pay for the fireworks - Curacao does.
sail7seas Posted November 17, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 17, 2006 ....:) We were told that Curacao (Dutch Island) and HAL split the cost. The fireworks were set off only for HAL ships. Obviously, if another line was in port the same day, they got to enjoy them as well.
RuthC Posted November 17, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 17, 2006 I wonder if HAL contributed to the cost of the fireworks, and this is another cost cutting idea?........jean:cool: That makes a lot more sense than saying it's because of a resort that won't even open for a year from now.
peaches from georgia Posted November 17, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 17, 2006 Another little thing gone that made HAL special. We love Curacao and loved the evening there, especially the sailaway. :(
