crosstown1 Posted November 27, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 27, 2006 So we're on the Diamond on Feb. 10, and have our first balcony (B742, aft port), and wondering if we should be on deck at sail or is it more fun to enjoy the balcony? What does everyone else like to do?

chasetf Posted November 27, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2006 Up on deck is our choice. Lots of music and excited people. Get to see all aspects bow / port / starboard / aft. I like to take lots of pictures and this is a great opportunity. :D

Jacqueline Posted November 27, 2006 #5 Share Posted November 27, 2006 The deck is fun. You will have plenty of sail aways from each port and you can enjoy these from your own balcony.
Genessa Posted November 27, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 27, 2006 I'll be the differing opinion ;). We like to do sail away from our balcony. You can enjoy the sail away and be by yourselves at the same time. We did our first two pre-balcony cruises up on deck.
smoothdancer Posted November 27, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 27, 2006 We do both. One of my favorite parts of the cruise is to pop the bottle of champagne we bring on board with us and enjoy the sail away on our balcony. We always get wonderful shots with our camera on our priviate deck... Thne once out to sea we head down to the pool deck where all the party activities are still underway. You can see both sides from aft balcony which is one reason we always try to get one.
Rare geoherb Posted November 27, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 27, 2006 For the first sailaway, I always want to be out on an open deck with others. It's a moot point on our upcoming Sun Princess cruise since we'll have an inside cabin on it. But even when we have had a balcony, we're always out on an open deck for the first sailaways and usually for the others as well.
Colo Cruiser Posted November 27, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 27, 2006 With the aft location I say the balcony for sure. :)
Fuzzzy Posted November 27, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 27, 2006 I always go to the highest point near the bow with my camera and maybe a sailaway drink too.
andrea63 Posted November 28, 2006 #12 Share Posted November 28, 2006 We prefer to be on our own balcony! :) Alot more relaxing and peaceful!
TinaLee Posted November 28, 2006 #13 Share Posted November 28, 2006 Usually we opt for the open deck experience, but since we sail from San Juan at 11 p.m. and have friends in the cabin next to ours, this time around we're kicking around opening the connecting door between the balconies and hosting all our friends on the 2 balconies in a "pajama party" sailaway! LOL!
cruznon Posted November 28, 2006 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2006 We prefer being on our balcony--especially if it's an aft one! We have our bottle of champagne and enjoy the moment. If you have an aft cabin, you'll love it when you feel the engines "kick in" and wake views are wonderful. Lucky you!!!:)
mexico5 Posted November 28, 2006 #15 Share Posted November 28, 2006 We have cabin E723 on the Star. This is our first cruise. Will we be able to see anything from this balcony or not? Will the ship leave on time or how do you know it's leaving, besides it starts moving LOL. Does it sound a horn or something? Don't want to miss it! Canuck Cruzer Posted November 28, 2006 #16 Share Posted November 28, 2006 When we were on the Grand, right after muster...we returned our life jackets..and went up to the top deck. We were already moving!! Our first cruise and we missed the first movements. We have an aft out of San Juan in March...I think we will hang out there. Julia’s Journey’s Posted November 29, 2006 #17 Share Posted November 29, 2006 We love being on deck for a while when we first leave, usually they have the sailaway party and we get to move around and see all sides, after that when we leave each port it depends on time, weather and what the plans are. spongerob Posted November 29, 2006 #18 Share Posted November 29, 2006 Either way is fun. On deck is great if the weather is nice. A balcony party can be fun, too, if you want some privacy or you have a couple of friends to join you. We normally get involved in the roll call threads for our cruises and the group size dictates we find a large space to get together for sailaway. We usually use our balcony when arriving and leaving from ports on the way.
cruzinchris Posted November 29, 2006 #19 Share Posted November 29, 2006 On two of our last three cruises, DH and I have met with our CC roll call group right after the muster drill. We met at Outriggers on the CB wearing Mardi Gras beads to identify ourselves. Planning to meet with roll call members when we sail on the Dawn in January. We hope the weather cooperates so we are able to be on deck at the Riviera Bar as we sail under the Golden Gate Bridge. Bon Voyage! 57 more days! dlp252 Posted November 29, 2006 #20 Share Posted November 29, 2006 I'm a balcony person too, lol. It's really nice to just hang out on the balcony, and I found it exciting without the crowds, lol.
1FatPER Posted November 29, 2006 #21 Share Posted November 29, 2006 Since your leaving LA in early February, the weather may dictate your choice. Have a good trip.
cwestbrook Posted November 29, 2006 #22 Share Posted November 29, 2006 We usually don't even realized we've sailed away until it's already happened. They don't make an announcement and you don't feel anything.
NSWP Posted December 1, 2006 #23 Share Posted December 1, 2006 We have never had a balcony, too expensive, but we love it on deck at sailaway waving to the people on land, having a cold lager and talking to everybody up there, that's what cruising is all about, mixing, I reckon having a balcony cabin can sometimes keep you out of the social stuff, but that is only my opinion. I enjoy trying to meet everybody on the ship, which is difficult.!! That is why we go for the longer cruises as you can see below, more social. Best wishes from down under.:)
