cactusrose Posted February 4, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2007 We are currently on board the Golden. Yesteday we picked up the crew from the Nordkapp, a small passenger ship that went a ground at Deception Island in Antartica. http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/DefencePolicyAndBusiness/HmsEnduranceToTheRescue.htm The passengers where all evacuated a few days ago but the crew were taken to the Russian and Chilean reserch stations Maxwell Bay. They were very happy to see us and it was a nice diversion for us as well. We have had the most spectacular weather and the captain and crew have gone out of their way to make this a most memorable experience.

The ocean can be rather nasty down between South America and Antartica.

sharpie13 Posted February 5, 2007 #6 Share Posted February 5, 2007 catusrose, Thank you for the information. Will the Norcapp crew be integrated into the Golden's or is Princess just providing transportation? Also, who is the current CD on the Golden? Thank you, Reed

Thank you, Reed I would think that they are just providing transportation as they are two different lines. :)

Did you get a chance to talk to any of those rescued or were they isolated from paying passengers ? Who needs to go to Antartica when we are getting the same weather here for free . lol . It was -30 degrees celcius in Toronto today . Say hi to the gang. ;)

Kiwi Kruzer Posted February 6, 2007 #11 Share Posted February 6, 2007 Great to hear from you on the Golden. I have been following your adventures and all the excitement down there on the bridgecam. Here is a report on the pick up........ * A Golden Pick-up Rescues at sea aren't that uncommon for cruise ships, especially in the Caribbean where people are often in trouble after fleeing Cuba in unseaworthy craft, and Golden Princess has had its share. But over the weekend, Golden Princess rescued 45 people in probably its most unusual place. Last week, Norwegian Coastal Voyages' Nordkapp scraped its hull while cruising offshore in Antarctica, damaging the ship's hull. Passengers were quickly transferred to a sister ship which was cruising nearby, but the nonessential crew were put ashore at Bellinghausen Ice Station on King George Island in Antarctica, and Nordkaap was safely towed to repair in South America with only a few essential crew members aboard. Meanwhile Golden Princess was on its own 21-day cruise to Antarctica which departed Rio de Janeiro on January 21. (The cruise will end at Buenos Aries on February 12.) The International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators contacted Princess Cruises and asked if Golden Princess could divert from its itinerary to pick up the 45 Nordkapp crew members at Bellinghausen Ice Station. "Of course, we were pleased to provide the required assistance," said Princess spokesperson Julie Benson. The transfer was set for Saturday at 2pm at Maxwell Bay, and Golden Princess would have to divert about 27 miles from its planned route. The crew met Golden Princess in zodiak craft and boarding via the pilot's ladder. They were dropped off at Ushuaia (Argentina) on the ship's scheduled call, and Golden Princess' itinerary was unaffected.
TorontoTL Posted February 6, 2007 #12 Share Posted February 6, 2007 It is nice to read about Princess ships doing the right thing and helping out. I'm sure everyone on board appreciated the need to do that.
