Who has done the Berlin train trip?

Recommended Posts

I have two questions: on the return train trip from Berlin, if I take this:

Berlin Hbf (Central Station) dep 18.10 hrs

Rostock Hbf arr 20.32 hrs

Rostock Hbf dep 21.01 hrs

Warnemünde arr 21.21 hrs

(1) Would that be too late or cutting it too close for a 22.00 ship departure?

(2) I believe this uses ICE train. Will I not be able to use my weekend happy pass on this schedule and have to pay extra?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Jose

(1) If the train is scheduled: NO PROBLEM!!!

The station is just 5 minutes away from the berth.

If it is slightly late you have time enough to catch the commuter.

If it is late more than 29 minutes but maybe 35 minutes you can catch a cab from Rostock.

What you can do is: go at 4.00 to a internet café and check the current location of the train:

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/bhftafel.exe/en?

Enter "Leipzig Hbf".

1. Departure ICE 1000 to Rostock (16.52 hrs)

If there is no remark (last column) the train should not be late or late less than 5 minutes. Delays to 15 minutes would not occur to big problems. More than 15 minutes I would think about to return with an earlier train to be on the safe side. But this is individual risk management...

2. Arrival ICE 1000 from Munich (16.42 hrs)

If there is a small delay less than 10 minutes pre-advised for Leipzig I would not panic as well as in Leipzig due to 10 minutes stay he can compensate.

It's to rate the individual risk of delay from an earlier point than Berlin.

So if you see that the train is due to any reason very late already in a station a long of this route you might can calculate the delay when the train is in Berlin and you later in Rostock and Warnemünde.

Otherwise it's better to enjoy Berlin also for the night time and flying from Berlin to your next port instead of trying to catch a train which is already late and no chance to meet your ship anyway...

(2) yes - but YOU and ALL OTHER CRUISERS who requested already:

I am working on the instructions to buy the suitable tickets and to save your money. Have another 48 hours patience. Hope it's ready then... Lot of work.

In Response to some individual cruiser's requests please allow to post my answers here as it might be interesting for other cruisers as well.

As I must pay for your downloads (traffic...), please be so kind to limit your downloads to those files which you really need for your travel:

A) Getting from your ship

A1) in Warnemünde to Warnemünde Station, Car Rental Station, Town Center (incl. Post Office/ATM/Change Office/Tourist Office/Internet Café etc.)

B) Buying Train tickets

B1) with cash - for local destination like Rostock, Bad Doberan (Molli-Train) and Special Tickets like Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Länderticket Brandenburg-Berlin and Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (Happy-Weekend-Ticket) plus tickets to cover the time until 9 am when the validity of Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern starts on Weekdays

B2) with credit cards - for full flexible undiscounted standard tickets (not furhterly explained) and Special Tickets like Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Länderticket Brandenburg-Berlin and Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (Happy-Weekend-Ticket)

B3) with credit cards in internet to buy discounted (Saver and Super Saver-Tickets) in advance if you are planning to use at least one section on ICE High-Speed-Long-Distance-Train

C) Getting around once you arrive at your destination station

C1) Lübeck to City Center

C2) Wismar to City Center

C3) Rostock to City Center

C4) Berlin to Historic East Berlin City Center (Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate)

C4 was my very first Guide which I made for other cruisers. So please accept that I do not like to change the layout as it's a hard work to do so.

If you are planning other destinations please let me know.

We can add time by time on request.

Warnemünde 07.00 hrs - 21.00 hrs

Train - Berlin - Party of 2 adults

Itinery:

08.02 dep from Warnemünde (Commuter train S1) / better use 10 minutes earlier

08.23 arr at Rostock Hbf (Central Station)

08.33 dep from Rostock Hbf (RE 33105)

11.16 arr at Berlin Hbf tief (Central Station lower level = Track 1-8)

16.41 dep from Berlin Hbf (RE 33112)

19.24 arr at Rostock Hbf

19.31 dep from Rostock Hbf (Commuter train S1)

19.51 arr at Warnemünde

Ticketing:

Regular price: 67.40 EUR pp

You must cover the time until 9.00 am.

Buy a single ticket to Lalendorf (5.20 EUR pp).

The train unfortunately does not stop anymore in Lalendorf from June 10, 2007.

Normally you should buy a ticket to Waren (Müritz) which 10 EUR more pp.

If you are a party of 2 it's still cheaper than to buy standard tickets.

Güstrow the last stop before 9.00 hrs is 8.58 hrs scheduled departure time. Maybe the train is 2 minutes late...

So show the conductor after Güstrow "Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" together with your Lalendorf-Ticket to show that you have covered the time before 9.00 am.

When he is claiming that the train does not stop anymore at Lalendorf, just tell him that you did not know about the schedule change and Eurail in New York gave you these instructions.

You need additionally

Länderticket Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (24.00 EUR for 1-5 persons)

Länderticket Brandenburg-Berlin (26.00 EUR for 1-5 persons)

NOW ALSO VALID FOR SUBWAY (U), TRAM and BUS within BERLIN CITY LIMITS with companies like BVG - Commuter Trains (S) in Berlin was already included in the fare!

So it would be 60.40 EUR for party of 2 instead of regular fare: 134.80 EUR.

If you like it more legal:

Buy a ticket to Waren(Müritz) for 15.60 EUR pp which make

81.20 EUR for party of 2 instead of regular fare: 134.80 EUR.

The ticket for Waren(Müritz) can be already purchased in the internet.

Use the same instructions like using the ICE-train. But enter

Warnemuende

Waren(Mueritz)

26.06.2007

08:00

nothing for return journey

and buy the tickets.

You should decide.

The official rule says to buy a ticket to the first stop arrived after 9 am.

But due to this stupid construction with the new schedule you are using the same train -

only because the stop was cancelled you have the disadvantage to pay more without getting to Berlin one second earlier.

Download instructions and getting around see here.

As weekend commuter who sits 3 1/2 hour every Friday and Sunday in a train I have some experience to "trick out" the German Railways.

So between my job as shipping manager I know a little bit about "Logistics" (men or goods...).

Since Germany hosted the Soccer World Championship last year, Germany became more open for international guests...

I just want to continue this great feeling of the last year...

But do not worry: I accept also advises from other cruisers...

So a lot of mails went today to Villefranche to check rates for private shore excursion. I take and I share... that's the balance.

Have a great time in Germany!

Just returned from Baltic Cruise on NCL. We had a group of 7 who took an ariconditioned van from port to Berlin. Driver pick up at ship, tour guide pick up in Berlin. Arranged through Original Berlin Walks (see web).

Left before ship groups, returned before ship groups, had attention of a marvelous guide and opportunity to move a bit more efficiently through various sites. Originally, I was skeptical about long ride and city vs. country tour. Berlin is an amazing city, like none I have ever visited. It is a story of modern history in progress - in a special way.

Hi, due to time constrain we have (arrival to Berlin not before 11.15, departure from Berlin 16), may I ask you which tour number you booked from original Berlin Walks?

Mant thanks in advance

I am fine...

Got 2 e-mails from you and 1 is responded...

We should use more traditional ways:

Carrier Pigeons... (if GPS available 52° 11' 36.48" N / 10° 28' 40.17" E)

Flying Doctors...

Western Union...

So do not worry: your request is attended!!!

HeinBloed,

Thanks for every of your post. I learnt a lot from them. I just checked bahn.de website. For 4 adults, it only costs $172.5 Euro with Sparpreis 25. Should we use it? The only issue I see is the fixed schedule. Our cruise departs at 10PM, but the train arrives around 9:21PM. Should I consider the Lander Ticket then?

Thanks in advance.

If you use both outward and return the ICE connection. Sparpreis 25 is the cheapest you can get.

06.52 hrs dep at Warnemünde (Commuter Train S1)

07.13 hrs arr at Rostock Hbf (Central Station)

07.27 hrs dep at Rostock Hbf (ICE 1001)

09.50 hrs arr at Berlin Hbf tief (lower level = tracks 1-8)

18.10 hrs dep at Berlin Hbf tief (ICE 1000)

20.32 hrs arr at Rostock Hbf

21.01 hrs dep at Rostock Hbf (Commuter Train S1)

21.21 hrs arr at Warnemünde

So you did everything right if you want to use exactly this connections outward and return on the same day.

If the system show availability you should buy it!!! The later you buy the less availability.

But it as online ticket.

After I explained it so well that I cannot help anyone anymore I can go now...

Have a great day in Berlin

Chinaplus,

My family (a group of 6) has booked a tour with Original Berlin Walks in early August. Was there anything you would have changed about your tour? I understand we can arrange the tour to suit our wants (within reason). Any feedback would be helpful

I am arriving in Germany on the NCL Jewel with a group of 5 including myself on Wednesday June 25, and plan to take the train independently to Berlin. Here are my questions:

  1. At what times do the trains depart in the morning to Berlin?
  2. Are there are delays in Customs?
  3. How much is the fare per person?
  4. What time should we return to get back on board the ship by 10:00 pm?
  5. Any drawbacks seen by other Cruisers? (in regards to ease of travel by doing Berlin independently)

Thanks for all and any feedback!

I am arriving in Germany on the NCL Jewel with a group of 5 including myself on Wednesday June 25, and plan to take the train independently to Berlin. Here are my questions:
  1. At what times do the trains depart in the morning to Berlin?

The first train starts at 04.07 am... but then you are still not in Warnemünde.

Therefore we should check first how NORWEGIAN JEWEL is scheduled for Warnemünde:

08.00 hrs - 22.00 hrs, which is absolutely "unpleasant":

SUBJECT YOUR SHIP IS VERY PUNCTUAL AND YOU GET QUICKLY FROM BOARD:

= CONNECTION 1

DB BAHN

dep Rostock Hbf at 9:04 RE 33006 from Platform

arr Schwerin Hbf at 10:01 at Platform

arr Berlin Hbf (tief) at 12:36

Normal fare:

39,80 EUR (2nd class), 63,70 EUR (1st class)

= 5 x 39,80 EUR (one way): 199,00 EUR

JUST FOR MEMORY AND SEE HOW HEINBLOED CAN SAVE YOUR MONEY

SUBJECT YOU CANNOT LEAVE THE SHIP SO QUICKLY:

= CONNECTION 2

DB BAHN

Timetable information

from Warnemünde to BERLIN

Station/Stop Date Arr. Dep. Line

==================================================

dep Warnemünde at 10:07 S1-trains from Platform

arr Rostock Hbf at 10:28 at Platform

dep Rostock Hbf at 10:33 RE 33107 from Platform

arr Berlin Hbf (tief) 13:15

Duration: 3:08, runs daily

Normal fare:

33,80 EUR (2nd class), 54,10 EUR (1st class)

= 5 x 33,80 EUR (one way) = 169,00 EUR

JUST FOR MEMORY AND SEE HOW HEINBLOED CAN SAVE YOUR MONEY

3. How much is the fare per person?

You see the normal fare for both connections in Red.

Let's start for connection 2:

1 x Länderticket (Day Pass) Mecklenburg-Vorpommern = 25.00 EUR

1 x Länderticket (Day Pass) Brandenburg-Berlin = 26.00 EUR

----------------------------------------------------------------

51.00 EUR => each 10.20 EUR i/o 33.80 EUR !!!

If you need connection 1:

Same like connection 2 but you need to cover the time until 9.00 am =>

PLUS 5 x 1.70 EUR single tickets to Rostock => each 11.90 EUR i/o 39.80 EUR!!!

4. What time should we return to get back on board the ship by 10:00 pm?

If you want to travel "for free" (due to day passes) you can go:

DB BAHN

Timetable information

from BERLIN to Warnemünde

Station/Stop Date Arr. Dep. Line

==================================================

dep Berlin Hbf (tief) at 16:43 RE 33112 from Platform

arr Rostock Hbf at 19:24 at Platform

dep Rostock Hbf at 19:31 S1-train from Platform

arr Warnemünde at 19:51

Duration: 3:08, runs daily

Normal fare:

33,80 EUR (2nd class), 54,10 EUR (1st class)

You do not need to have a return ticket, if you use your Ländertickets for the return journey.

BUT NORWEGIAN JEWEL IS THE ONLY SHIP WHICH HAS A "STUPID" TIME TO ARRIVE AND DEPART. I would highly recommend to use the highspeed train. But you need separate tickets.

DB BAHN

Timetable information

from BERLIN to Warnemünde

Station/Stop Date Arr. Dep. Line

==================================================

dep Berlin Hbf (tief) at 18:12 ICE 1000 from Platform

arr Warnemünde at 20:44

Duration: 2:32, runs Mo - Fr, Su, not 29. Jun,

3. Oct

Normal fare:

47,00 EUR (2nd class), 75,00 EUR (1st class)

NO RISK NO FUN...

If you are willing to buy asap super saver discounted tickets (limited availability, first come - first serve, no changes, no refunds) you can go for 29.00 EUR pp.

If you are willing to buy asap (June 13, 2008, 22.52 hrs) via internet: 5 tickets would be available for this price...

Have fun in Berlin!!!

I really appreciated all the detailed information. I did reserve a booking on the DB website for the Lauden group ticket. It was quite a feat since I know not a lick of German...anyway, I am now trying to get my boarding ticket but I'm wondering if the site is "afterhours", which would explain why I can't seem to find the right link for printing. Any suggestions? It is probably my lack of patience with the on-line system.

Thanks...

Like a little child...

must try it immediate without waiting for further instructions...

Have you ordered it??? Ländertickets Online are send by regular mail!!! It's no online ticket.

Did you get any booking confirmation or something like this???

Forward it to

CRUISECRITIC (at) NICKNAME-onboard dot de

Please replace "NICKNAME" by nickname used in this forum.

Let me check if you got a booking confirmation.

If you did not get anything you should not have booked it...

Buy it here at the machine:

http://home.arcor.de/yao/DB-Long-Distance-Ticket-Machine-BB.pdf

http://home.arcor.de/yao/DB-Long-Distance-Ticket-Machine-MV.pdf

It's cheaper than at the manpower-occupied counters.

You must buy the Long-Distance-Tickets for the high-speed-train asap if you want to use the 18.12 hrs-connection from Berlin...

That's the bottle-neck due to limited availability.

Ländertickets are open sale!

Dover, England EU Non-Schengen

Oslo, Norway Non-EU Schengen

Copenhagen, Denmark EU Schengen

Tallinn, Estonia EU Non-Schengen

St. Petersburg, Russia Non-EU Non-Schengen

Helsinki, Finland EU Schengen

Warnemünde, Germany EU Schengen

Helsingborg, Sweden EU Schengen

Dover, England EU Non-Schengen

Let's make it simple: if the colour does not change you can expect smooth treatment and fast disembarquement.

e.g. section Helsinki - Warnemünde - Helsingborg

As all three are EU and Schengen there should be no big custom's and no big immigration's prodecures.

From blue to orange: customs and immigration required (change EU to Non-EU and change from Non-Schengen to Schengen)

From orange to green: customs required (change Non-EU to EU)

From green to blue: immigration required (change Schengen to Non-Schengen)

From blue to red: customs and immigration required (leaving EU to third country)

From red to green: customs and immigration required (entering EU and Schengen from third country)

From green to blue: immigration required (change Schengen to Non-Schengen)

St. Petersburg will be desaster and compared to all other ports the "hardest" port to leave the ship.

The only EU-place you should expect possible delays is Helsinki when you are re-entering the EU. But the Finnish customs and immigration is very efficient and smooth. I do not think that 1.5 hours will be necessary in Warnemünde!

So these are potential risks you should think about when you are planning individual tours!!! Normally you will not remark it expect St. Petersburg. It could be that due to G8 Germany will suspend the Schengen Membership during or around G8-summit. But your itinery are made so you are after the G8-summit in Warnemünde.

When your passports returns you can see.

Normally there should be stamps in your passports:

Dover (embarquement)

Oslo (entering Schengen)

Tallinn (leaving Schengen)

St. Petersburg (ship's VISA stamp)

Helsinki (re-entering Schengen)

Helsingborg (leaving Schengen)

Dover (disembarquement)

Good iitinery!!!

Have a nice cruise and WILLKOMMEN IN DEUTSCHLAND - Welcome to Germany

Regards,

HeinBloed

What about Amsterdam? I will be sailing in and out of Amsterdam. My first destination after sailing out of Amsterdam is Warmunde and last stop before Amsterdam is Copenhagen.

I'm not sure if Amsterdam is part of the Schengen or not? Are these customs/immigration rules still in effect. It has been a year since your above post.

Thanks.

Ciao Italia Bella...

Amsterdam - Warnemünde - Copenhagen are all three in Schengen-Zone and all three are part of the EU.

So should go very quickly: immigration (subject there is someone...) and customs (subject there is someone...).

My booking number is EO9K1N. I was charged 51.00 EUR for tickets.

I think I can email back a cancellation request to fahrartenservice@bahn.de

What should I do - just cacel and book via your suggestion?

Thanks!!!

When are you leaving from home???

Is there enough time to mail it???

If yes - no reason to panic...

If no - I would cancel...

They charge you 3.50 EUR for mailing - so it's more expensive than buying at the ticket machine.

Hi,

I've read all of your posts. Very interesting. Thank you. We are afraid of getting back too late, so we have decided to see the area near Rostock and go to the Molli train. We have booked a 1/2 day tour. Is this area nice?

Thank you,

Ellen
