Formal night questions answered!

Okay I just came off of RCCL Rhapsody of the seas. I was in the Champagne bar on formal night and thought I would snap a general photo to give an idea of what others wear... personally I was rather put off by most of it and the no hose thing.. OMG how tacky! Sorry but I heard it commented in by others too and I have even asked several men and got the same answer... they prefer the hose look.. anyway... not the greatest photo but you get an idea...

okay maybe not... LOL Mostly cocktail dresses, not a lot of glitz this time, lots of sandals and very few with hose on... I have a friend on Carnival Conquest right now, he wears tuxes to the first formal always, he was getting ready last night and I told him put on jeans and a tshirt, he laughed at me. Just called me and he wore his tux to formal night last night and was shocked at how many had on jeans and tshirts.. sad the way things are going. He has been on other Carnival ships and said this is the first time he saw it so wide spread.

Wow! I'm somewhat surprised. I thought people would be more dressed up. I have to say, I was rather impressed with the level of formality on my 4 night Imagination cruise earlier in the month. Most of the women were in cocktail dresses.

Sorry, I disagree with you on the hose thing. I hate them, and I personally think they look matronly (on me and other younger women). I'm 30, and have nicely toned legs with even skin tone. But, some wouldn't be caught dead without them. So, it's all good:) We wouldn't have anything to talk about here if we all agreed.

Some cruise lines hold to the "formal night" distinction in all the bars and public places all night long. Others allow people to change clothes after the "formal dinner" when they head to a casino or show. It just depends.

I can't imagine anyone trying to rein in the people that aren't dressed to a certain level, and telling them to go change. With the monster size of the newer ships, you can bet you will see everything and anything.

If people are going to be critical of people around them, then they are missing out on their own enjoyment.

Hose? I don't wear them. I keep my legs tan and they look younger bare. If I was on the deck on an Alaskan spring cruise, I might wear them for warmth...that's about it. But again. It's a matter of taste. Because someone is or isn't wearing hose, doesn't make them more or less dressed up.

Only the more upscale lines hold to the formal night all night, very few mainstream lines do it anymore. I remember when I first sailed on Rhapsody, if you were not appropriately dressed for the evening they would turn you away from the dining room. I was surprised how causual everyone seemed, even in the cocktail dresses. The lack of hose make them look less dressed up. I agree some women can get away without them but on formal night, I feel no matter how good you look, put them on! Even if they are sheer, just looks nicer to me..

but you are right, what would we have to talk about if we all agreed!

I almost fell off my couch the week before my cruise. My best friend, a gay guy, was staying with me for the week. We were sitting here watching the news and the newscaster lady did not have on hose. I didnt say a thing, when all of a sudden from beside me I hear... OMG why have women stopped wearing hose?? Do they not know how tacky it looks?? ... I was cracking up. She had good legs too, toned and tanned but the lack of hose was so obvious.. Glad he agrees or we would have something else to fight about... LOL He even ragged on me when on a casual night when I wore a skirt without hose, chewed me out all night telling me how tacky. I reminded him it was CASUAL night.. LOL

Wish the photo had come out better. I took another I thought but it didnt come out at all or is on another camera.

Please don't jump all over me but...I would "personally" be upset if I saw that picture and I was in it....and then you go bashing what I would have been wearing! Please remember that everyone goes on a cruise for different reasons....some people just want to relax and have a good time, some others go out for the nines and get all dressed up...To Each His Own!!

Please stop picking on what other people wear....just because you all like to dress up (I do too) doesn't mean that is the only way to go!!!

JMHO...

I don't know if it's where I'm from (Southern Calif.) but I have not bought a pair of hose in 20 years. In our community you just don't see them anymore except maybe on the older ladies.....

Nope just toned, tanned and a nice pedicure and we are all set.....

On a cruise, I generally don't wear hose with longer dresses and sandals.

Where I work, both men and women wear suits, and the women all wear hose. I think it would look very unprofessional to wear a business suit without hose.

Well, I think it's very old fashioned to think everyone should always have on hose. I mean, LOL, seriously? Don't get me wrong, I sometimes wear them, sometimes don't. But, I am definitely not TACKY when I'm not wearing them. Not all gay men are fashion experts. There are old fashion gay people, too. I agree that hose should be worn in a professional setting, though. Newscasters and offices-- it seems more appropriate and more professional looking to have on hose. But, what do I know? I've never been much of a fashion snob.

Wow, I live in Ca, and hose is what I get tangled up in when I try to water my plants! Haven't seen actual hose (like pantyhose) in years, except if the wearers are over 70 years old or have vein issues. Recently cruised to the Mex Riv, no hose in sight.

I think that silk or textured stockings with a garter belt are sexy (maybe with nothing else), but pantyhose are past their prime. (I'm in my 50's). My stocking wearing will be in the bedroom, not in public.

On a cruise in a tropical climate, I think hose look out of place. I usually go hoseless but I have some shimmer lotion that I use on my legs to give a little extra "sheen" to them. And of course a good pedicure is a must with sandals! Sandals with hose is NOT a look I like....

I for one am glad that styles now (for cocktail dresses, etc) are more tailored and "minimal" rather than outrageous. That's more my comfort zone. Dressy doesn't have to mean overdone. It can also mean understated.

I've never ever heard this before. I do feel that certain environments and occasions call for hose (formal business meetings/environments, winter events) but honestly if your legs (and feet!) are in good shape, bare legs can be extremely attractive, even more than "hosed" legs, especially with sundresses and open-toed shoes and sandals. I have a drawer full of hose, but they are so old, and I wear them so rarely I should probably throw them all out and put that space to better use!! (Hmmm....why didn't I think of that before??? )

(And this wasn't mentioned...but for tights...the opaque dark colored ones, with boots in the winter, and a long skirt...well I just love that look!! )

I personally think wearing or not wearing hose is a personal decision and there is no right or wrong answer.

I find that some outfits look more "finished" with hose. If my legs are tan, I generally do not wear hose with short cocktail or long; if not, I will always opt for sheer hose and wear closed toes shoes.

I agree with Andee that in a conservative business environment hose are appropriate with business suits.

If you found the talk tacky, why would you start a thread about it? I find it hard to believe any man prefers hose to no hose.

Stockings, yes, hose I find far fetched.

IMHO, saying women who don't wear hose look tacky is classless in itself. It may not be the look you aspire to, and goody for you. Those of us who choose not to wear hose may think those wearing hose especially with strappy sandals, and in the tropics to boot, are just silly. But that is our opinion. I don't tie someone's character to hose/hose nots, more to their attitude.

I have to agree that the picture was out of line. Granted it was blurry but I am sure the people in that picture could pick themselves out of it if they saw it, and I am sure the person who posted it would not want the same thing to happen to them.

As far as what people wear (or dont wear) to formal night... to be honest I really don't care all that much when I am on a cruise what other people wear... I am there to enjoy myself not worry what someone wears to formal night.. I wear a tux to formal night because I want to..

Hmmmm people wearing garbage bags on a cruise ship... you might start a new fashion trend Sandie...:p

Garbage bags MUST have handle ties on formal nights. Twist ties are OK for informal. READ YOUR CRUISE CAPERS, people!
