Carnival Liberty Review – 8 day Eastern Caribbean – 8/18/07-8/26/07

2007LibertyCruise1034.jpg

Background: This was our 3rd Carnival cruise and in our small party it was myself, my husband and our 11 year-old daughter. Previously, we have been on the Miracle and the Glory – so that is my frame of reference for other ships, embarkation ports, and itineraries.

Pre-Cruise: We stayed at the Embassy Suites on 17th for three nights before the cruise. It was close to the port and the airport (taxi to hotel is about $15) and there were plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. The hotel has a nice pool and the complimentary breakfast was above average.

We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale very late at night since our original flight was cancelled due to mechanical difficulties and we were rebooked on a flight that put us into FLL late at night. Because we were so tired and just wanted to get to our hotel, we accidentally left one of our pieces of luggage at the airport and didn’t notice it until much later. The hotel was kind enough to shuttle us back and forth to retrieve the suitcase the next day even though the shuttle does not make return trips from the airport.

The pool area at the hotel was very nice with a waterfall and separate hot tub and sauna/steam rooms. One afternoon there were two homeless people bathing in the hot tub and taking their clothes off to do some “laundry”. Security quickly escorted them off the property.

Embarkation: We took the hotel shuttle to the port at 11:30 and were on-board by noon. We had the VIP check-in but in this terminal there is not a separate area for the VIPs so it was not as fast and efficient as other ports we have experienced. No big deal – we were just glad to be THERE!

Interestingly, once we were on board the ship we made a couple purchases. The next day our sail and sign card would not work in the Arcade so we went to the Purser’s Desk. (Long, long, long lines but that is another story!) The assistant purser lady that helped us told me that we had no credit card on the account. What?? We gave them our credit card at embarkation. I asked how we were able to make purchases with no credit card on the account and she said that we had an onboard credit. Huh?? She told me I had $135 credit. That was the credit for the excursion we had pre-booked through Carnival. They show the charge on your account and then a credit is applied since it is already pre-paid. In any event, none of this made sense to me but they straightened it out and we had no further problems with the card. She asked if they could do anything else for us before we left the desk. I innocently asked if they could put another $500 credit on my account but they apparently didn’t mean is there anything else they can do because that didn’t happen!

Our luggage arrived fairly quickly – long before the muster drill. After all the unpacking and getting organized I had such a bad headache that I laid down right after the ship sailed and didn’t get back up the entire night. I missed the first dinner in the dining room as well as the welcome show in the lounge.

The Ship: The décor in the atrium lobby area was very flowery with wrought iron accents. Other areas of the ship had some pretty cool themes like The Stage lounge which had carved figures of music icons on the walls and some old photos of music legends (can’t recall exactly who right now…) The Golden Olympian Dining Room (mid ship) and Silver Olympian Dining Room (Aft) were beautiful with brass accents and beautiful chandeliers.

I actually made it to the gym twice on the cruise. Ok, I’ll admit that once was only to weigh myself but I did get on the treadmill which were situated to have lovely views of the ocean. There were plenty of treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals as well as free weights and Nautilus type equipment. Running on the treadmill was rather tricky on a rough sea day! The jogging/walking track at the back of the ship on the Sports Deck was nice except for the smell of “cooking garbage” by the funnel. People who were up there in the morning were very pleasant and always said “good morning”.

The only other lounges that we visited were the Hot and Cool Club (the disco) and the Victorian Lounge, one of the locations for the Captain’s Cocktail Party.

Cabin: Our room was on the Empress deck, cabin 7282, which was a category 11 located near the atrium elevators. The room was the same in layout as the rooms on the Miracle and Glory – nothing really different at all. Only occasionally, did we hear noisy folks out in the hallways late at night. Other than that, it was a pretty quiet location.

The sofa was made up into a single bed and was quit comfortable. It even had its own comforter/duvet and double set of sheets. (Previous cruises only had a sheet and thin blanket.)

The bathroom had a separate dressing area with vanity and full closet. The bathroom itself had double sinks and a spa tub. Plenty of space and very functional!

Our room steward, Clynton, was very efficient and friendly. He never failed to call us by name and even gave nicknames to my husband and daughter! We looked forward to his cheerful greetings when we saw him in the hallways.

He unlocked the fridge/bar for us so we use it for some of our beverages. However, I did notice that the fridge never really got anything very cold. Well, I suppose that is why they keep the ice-buckets well stocked!

The chairs on the balcony were mesh fabric and not the hard plastic that I recall from our previous cruises. At the end of the cruise they opened all of the dividers on the balconies and scrubbed the entire length of the deck.

Shows and Entertainment: I thought the stage productions for this ship were actually very good. The female vocalist (Paula Creech) was very good. The show “Rock Down Broadway” was very entertaining as well as the “Wonderful World” production.

Comedian Happy Cole was awesome but Al Romero was only mediocre – not a lot of laughs.

We also really enjoyed the Jerome Dabney show which was a tribute to Motown. At the end of the show Jerome announced that everyone should stay for a special guest that was to follow. A few moments later, “Stevie Wonder” appeared on stage. You should have seen the rush to the stage to take photos!! It appeared that many people really thought that Stevie Wonder had put in a two minute appearance to sing a few lines from Superstition then left. We spoke with Jerome after since he remained down front to sell CDs – we said that we really enjoyed his show as well as “Stevie”. He winked!

We missed the Larry Burroughs Orchestra show as well as the Legends Show on the last night.

One night, the Piano Man (piano bar) singer, Damian, performed a song on stage in the Venetian Palace since his contract was up and he was going to be going home to England at the end of the cruise. Todd Wittmer, the cruise director, also sang a duet with him.

One other duet that deserves mention is the couple (Summer Breeze) who perform in the Atrium Lobby in the evening. The little gal and the guy on the keyboard can really sing!! They performed every night from 9:30 – 12:30.

Seaside Theater on Lido: I enjoyed the big screen with the various movies and events that they showed. Some of the movies throughout the week were; Stranger Than Fiction, Wizard of Oz, Talladega Nights, Casino Royale, Dreamgirls, Happy Feet, Facing The Giants, Maltese Falcon, and The Prestige.

They also had some video concerts playing such as: Johnny Cash, Bee Gees, Beyonce, U2, Nat King Cole, and Ray Charles.

Ports:

San Juan: The ship arrived in Puerto Rico around 5:00 PM. We did a walking tour of Old San Juan and did some shopping. We saw Fort San Cristobal - from the outside as it was closed by the time we got there. When you sail into the port at San Juan you see Fort El Morro which sits at the entrance to the harbor.

St. Thomas: We had been to St. Thomas before and had visited Magen’s Bay – which was gorgeous. This time we did Sapphire Beach which we also loved! Sapphire is a resort property with public access to their beach. They have a restaurant and water sport rentals right on the beach. We rented a kayak and enjoyed the beautiful water. Chair rentals were $7 each. There was plenty of shade to the right of the entrance to the beach if you wanted to avoid the sun.

There are some rocks and gravely areas when you enter the water in certain spots so just be aware. It was never too crowded even though there were three cruise ships in port.

Returning to the port later in the day, there is a back up of taxi’s waiting to return passengers to the port so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship. The taxi fare to get to Sapphire Beach was $10 per person each way.

Antigua: We went to Dickenson’s Bay for the day. The taxi fare was $12 for the three of us – one way. Little Joe, our taxi driver provided a very informative history of the island and even stopped at the old Anglican church that you can see from the port to allow us to take some photos. The church is a historic landmark having been built in the 1700s.

Dickenson Bay was wonderful! It has fine, velvety, white sand. We rented chairs, $5 each, and jet skis, $45 for ½ hour by Tony’s Beach Bar. The guys who worked there; Larry, Dion, and Michael were all very nice and helpful. The bar/restaurant had food and drinks that was reasonably priced. Sneaky Pete’s was next door and I have read good things about that establishment as well.

There are vendors that go up and down the beach selling their wares. You can buy anything from jewelry to seashells to wood carvings. I purchased a painting from a local artist named Sauda. She primarily paints local beach landscapes – the one I bought was of Hawksbill Beach.

There are several hotels including the Sandals property on Dickenson Bay. It is about a 15 minute drive from the port.

Antigua was our favorite port on this cruise!

Tortola: There were a couple of beaches that we considered (Brewer’s and Long Bay) but we ended up going to Cane Garden Bay. The taxi was $6 per person each way to the other side of the island from the port of Road Town. Our taxi driver warned us that we would ascend to 1,400 feet and then have a steep descent to the Bay. It wasn’t too bad although there were some nervous folks in our taxi/truck. Near the top, the driver pulled over to the side of the road (well, there really is no “shoulder” so it was closer to the edge of the cliff) to allow us to take some photos of Brewer’s Bay, the cruise port, and Cane Garden Bay.

We were welcomed to “paradise” when we arrived at the beach and offered chairs ($5 each) and an umbrella ($3 each). There was a bar with drinks and they also had fresh coconuts and ice-cream/shakes for sale. There were some kayaks and boats for rent but no jet skis or other motorized water-sport equipment.

The beach itself was nice – it did get pretty crowded. The cruise director and his family were hanging out at this beach as well. (I suppose that is a pretty good endorsement!)

There were vendor stalls with T-shirts, towels, beach bags, and assorted knick-knacks for sale. We decided to pick up some souvenirs here rather than go into town or shop at the flea market by the pier. One of the guys who ran the outfit introduced himself as “One Love” which was the name of the little market. He gave us some free key chains and post cards.

Nassau: This port was where we did our only Carnival shore excursion. We did the Catamaran Snorkel – we did this same excursion last time we were in Nassau.

There was a group of about 50 of us that paraded down the pier and to the Lady Savannah catamaran. All along the way, street vendors are calling out to you to buy their towels, waters, shells, and such. Oh, and even though you are just stepping onto the boat to leave for your excursion, the women still want to braid your hair!

The snorkel excursion takes you along the harbor and past amazing mansions and beautiful waterfront homes. They have a pretty good narrative of Who’s Who among the rich and famous that have homes in the Bahamas.

Once we arrived at the reef area, we were able to snorkel for an hour. They sell fish food for $1. We were near a group of people that were feeding the fish and were instantly surrounded by about 100 fish! One of the tour guides dove down for a starfish and let everyone hold it. I don’t know the names of any of the fish that we saw but they were amazing colors of brilliant blues and yellows. This was an awesome experience.

Back on the boat, they had sodas ($2 per can) and chips ($1 per bag) for sale. Underwater cameras were $16.

Shipboard Activities: There were plenty of activities to keep us busy all week. Families could participate in scavenger hunts with the kids or have fun with water wars (think water balloon fights in a cage!). My husband and daughter even played shuffleboard once. We skipped the trivia contests and bingo – but they were abundant throughout the week.

The waterslide did not appear to be open much throughout the week. The Capers said that it was open daily but it must have only been certain hours during the day for which I was not present.

Funship Freddy celebrated his 5th birthday while on this sailing. They had a birthday party in the disco one afternoon. We attended with our 11 year-old and they had dancing, games, food, and two big cakes. We did notice a few parents that shoved their kids in front of everybody else to have their photos taken with Freddy. Apparently they did not see the line where the rest of us were patiently waiting our turn!

In the Hot & Cool Club besides the music and dancing, they had some activities. I participated in the “chicken and cow” game one night – it is basically a hot potato game with a plastic chicken and cow being passed around to eliminate the person who is left holding them when the music stops. I almost won!!! There was a minor incident that happened when my husband and I left the disco at 2 AM. There were a group of about 5 young men hanging around outside. When we exited, they yelled out some obscene comments and told me that they had been watching me inside the disco – all of this in front of my hubby who is a big guy!!! I ignored them and just kept walking. I’m just glad that I was not by myself. (This was the night of the Camp Carnival slumber party which our daughter was attending so that made me a bit nervous in light of these guys hanging out and being rude.)

Then there were the usual activities like the hairy chest contest, Newlywed Not So Newlywed Game (hilarious!), ice carving demo, and art auctions.

I think there may have been some other unannounced activities on the ship like annoy your fellow passengers! We were sitting on the Lido eating and watching people return at the end of one of the port days. One man came over and stood right at our table and watched the goings on for awhile. We ignored him until he lit a cigarette right at our table when we were eating. I turned around and shooed him away and asked him to go away and smoke somewhere else! He said, “I didn’t know it would bother you!” Yeah, and I didn’t know people could be so rude!

The other annoying incident was in one of the Carnival shops. The last night of the cruise we were waiting in line to purchase some postcards and trinkets at the “Fun Ship Shop” and a lady stepped right in front of me saying that she just had a quick question for the clerk. Ok, no problem. However, she ended up grabbing the last luggage bag that was on sale and purchased it without even looking back at me! Aren’t I nice!

Food: For the most part, we really enjoyed the food. After three Carnival cruises we recognize those dishes that we would not pass up and those that don’t excite us too much.

We ate dinner in the dining room every evening and our servers Randall (Costa Rica) and Lennox (St. Vincent) were very friendly and efficient. We loved these guys!! We had late seating (8:30) in the Golden Olympian (mid ship) dining room and had a booth for just the three of us. At first I was disappointed as we love to meet new people and build some lasting memories of the people we have met along the way. However, after the second night (I missed the first night due to a headache) we decided to keep our table as we loved our servers.

We ate breakfast in the dining room 5 out of the 8 mornings. The other three times we ate at the Lido buffet. The omelets station made cooked to order eggs and obviously omelets – which were very good. Among the breakfast buffet selections; fresh fruit, yogurt, danishes, bagels, potatoes, cold cereals, oatmeal, grits, and breakfast meats (bacon, sausage, ham).

Room service supplemented those long afternoons when we were between excursions and our 8:30 dinner seating. I still order the PB&J on white bread every cruise! Some afternoons it took them almost an hour to deliver our order but it was more likely due to high demand during that time of the day. The room service in the morning typically arrived about 15 minutes prior to the time noted on the order card. Oh well, the delivery guys saw me in my sleep rumpled state more than once.

Some of our favorite dishes were: Wild mushroom soup, French onion soup, smoked duck appetizer, smoked chicken quesadilla, NY sirloin steak, beef Wellington, Chateaubriand, pepper steak with rice, crème brulee, Grand Marnier soufflé with vanilla sauce, and some apple tart thingy. Yum!

Some of our not so favorites were: Mango cream soup (too bland), Thai beef appetizer, and escargot (just kidding, I don’t eat snails!)

We had made reservations for Harry’s Supper Club once we boarded the ship. However, after several nights in the dining room with the excellent service and never actually being able to eat an entire meal with the all the food set before us – we decided to cancel our reservation. We’ve been to the Supper Club on the Miracle (Nick & Nora’s) and the Glory (Emerald Room) so we are familiar with the ambiance and menu.

Hubby and daughter had the pizza one afternoon – I’ve tried it in the past and it was decent. Oh, and I never failed to have at least one danish every morning – delish!

Crew: Besides our room steward and dining room team that I have already mentioned there were a few other outstanding crew members who helped to make our cruise enjoyable.

Saimai, from Thailand was a photographer that we had met on the Glory. We were pleased to see her on the Liberty and remembered her big smile and that she always called our daughter “baby”.

Alexandr, the Assistant Maitre‘D, visited our table every night and engaged us in pleasant conversation. He remembered our names and when we saw him in other areas of the ship throughout the day he greeted us with a smile.

I can’t say that we encountered any unpleasant crew members. We were on vacation so there was a smile on our face most of the time and I find that can be contagious!

Camp Carnival: Our daughter registered for Camp Carnival but really didn’t attend too many activities other than the first night activities and the slumber party.

The slumber party took place on the night before our last sea day. The kids met at 10:00 and were returned to their cabins at 3:30 am. The cost was $26 per child and additional children paid a discounted rate.

The counselors did a great job with the kids. They had plenty of activities for the 9-11 age group (Inters) including some family activities.

Debarkation: Using the new number system for debarkation, we were group 4 so we were one of the first groups off the ship after self assist was completed. Our group was called at 8:30 and we were off the ship and in a taxi by 8:50.

A word of warning, the atrium lobby elevators will not be available for use during debarkation. All the other elevators get very crowded.

Post Cruise: We stayed at the Renaissance for one night after the cruise. It was a nice property very close to the port. I had purchased the room through Priceline for $105 so it was definitely worth the money. In truth, I preferred the Embassy Suites – although the Renaissance was a lovely hotel.

The pool area was on the small side at this property but they had cabanas to get away from the hot sun. The health club had a decent selection of fitness equipment.

Ok, I think I’m through: If anyone is still reading, thanks for hanging in there…. I didn’t realize this would reach novel proportions!

I would definitely cruise the Liberty again – I loved the 8 day itinerary with 5 ports. We only cruise once a year since we do other land based vacations but I must say that I prefer cruising to other vacation options.

Please let me know if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer as many as I can.

By the way: How do you size these photos so that you don't have a life size image of yourself on the page?? I was going to include more photos of the various ports and such but it takes up too much space when they are inserted this size!

Great review. I really enjoyed reading it. If you want to attach the pics where they aren't large, just go into the tool bar and click on the arrow next to that little paper clip. Then another box will open up. In that box at the top it will say "upload from your computer" and a button that says "browse". Click on Browse and then you have to find the file location where your jpg is located. Once you find it, click on open and then click on Upload. It will take a few seconds depending on how fast your connection is.

Hope that helps. :)

Thank you so much for your great review!! We are down to around 45 days!! Can't wait!!

How exciting! You and your group will have tons of fun!

I noticed that you will be planning a group cruise for Hawaii - I may look into that one as we have always wanted to do the Spirit for either Alaska or Hawaii. (Assuming it is Carnival! LOL!)

Take care!

Nice review!! I love the Liberty and going on her again this March! Can't wait. We have cabin 7442. How was that deck??? Last time we were on 6 so this shouldn't be much different. We loved deck 6.

Sounds like you had great movies also, hope we have some good ones. I hope we don't have any trouble as we are doing the Panama 8 day and we only hit 3 ports, so it could make for long days on a ship.

We too loved our waiters last time so we didn't go to Harrys so we will definitely try it this time. Isn't it funny we did the same 8 day as you and Antigua was are worst port. We had a bad experience. Thanks for the review and you have a lovely family!!

Hi Sunlover5! It looks like you will be in the back of the ship. Overall, we were pleased with deck 7 since there were only passenger cabins above and below this level.

I don't know how often they change the movies but they had a good mix of older and new shows with a good variety of concerts. It is pretty cool to be out on the deck watching a movie on the big screen!

As for 3 ports with a 8 day cruise - I actually don't mind the sea days. I like to relax and not have to rush to the pier with all of our stuff in tow!

In any event, I wish you a happy cruise and I hope that you have an awesome time. :)

if the link doesn't work just go to shipparade.com and search for Carnival Liberty

also GatorClaw used to have a Liberty video on his site but I don't know if it's there or if he still has it on Youtube - I'm sure you can search there

It's a great ship!

haha. Jerome and Stevie were on the Carnival Pride back in March 07. How funny that they are now on the Liberty. People on the Pride got excited as well! lol. But at least it was a cruise out of Los Angeles, where maybe it could be Stevie. lol

Thanks for the great review, we will be sailing feb 08, same cabin. did the balcony have lounge chairs? Did they have daily breakfast specials? Did you notice if they had exercise classes?

Betty

Betty:

Yes, there were lounge chairs on the balcony. see photo below.

Note to Sandi: I'm still trying to figure out how to size. The arrow next to my paperclip is an undo button!

There were no breakfast specials per se.... they have a set menu in the dining room as well as at the buffet on the Lido.

Here's a link to a copy of the menus - breakfast is on the 1st page: http://www.zydecocruiser.com/free07/menus.htm

Here's a copy of the room service breakfast choices:

http://bergertravels.com/CarnivalContBreakfastMenu.html

As for exercise classes - they offered early morning sunrise stretch classes, aerobics, yoga, or circuit classes - all free. They also had pilates classes for which they charged $10. There may have been a few other classes available as well. I didn't personally participate in a formal class but I did use the gym.

I hope this helps! Enjoy your Liberty cruise!

One day, I will have to sail on the Pride since it is just about 20 minutes from where we live!

Take care!

I would call them deck chairs rather than lounge chairs. You pretty much have to sit up. But the balconies are great. I enjoy every minute out there.

Yes, true for the smaller chair. And yes, the balconies are not that large to really stretch out and lounge in the larger chair that you can adjust to recline. (In the photo you can see one of each. On the other side of the door there was also another "lounge" chair.)

But I agree, the balconies are great for spending time on just enjoying the sounds of the ocean and having some privacy!!

How funny! Your cabin was two doors down from ours - albeit several weeks before we sailed!!

Clynton was awesome!

One question I have not been able to have answered is do they leave chocloate chip cookies at night for the kids???? I have not seen these - just the mints!
