Princess now non-smoking in ALL cabins?!?!

I would also suggest that nonsmokers prepare themselves for smokers who are no longer going to be considerate. As smokers are more and more being pushed out we are going to take advantage of those places that we are allowed to smoke. Back when we had more places to smoke it wasnt a problem to put one out if it bothered someone. But now when we have such few places you arent going to be seeing this happen. I am seeing this happen more and more here in california. Indian casinos are the only place we are allowed to smoke inside any more. When nonsmokers ask someone to not smoke they are told to go to the nonsmoking room. and most people aren't nice about it anymore. So if balconys are one of the few places left to smoke on cruise ships I see the same thing happening.

To be honest, I don't think many non-smokers are too worried about that point, BUT, I will say this, if a non-smoker comes into a "smoking allowed" zone, then he or she HAS no right to complain. You deserve your space as do the non-smokers.

In the end this issue is about the majority being served, and what's considered fair. I have nothing against smokers (my mother has smoked her whole life, and I tolerated it growing up whether I liked it or not, now that I'm older, when she visits, if she wants to smoke, she thoughtfully goes outside, I never had to even ask her) as long as a smokers habit doesn't affect me I don't care, BUT the minute I'm forced to inhale their smoke, or MY clothes stink from their smoke, I become as indignant as anybody else who's being forced to tolerate another persons habit. Tolerance is the key word here, BUT the smokers have to realize that the non-smokers aren't invading their air, the SMOKER is invading everyones air, and the non-smokers are in the majoirty, hence the more and more restrictive non-smoking zones. The majority rules, and they should, but I'm glad smokers still have their spaces to smoke, and we non-smokers need to respect that also........we need to get along, and tolerance is the answer. One other thing, smokers are becoming a smaller and smaller group as a whole, probably because of all the health facts associated with smoking that have emerged these last few years.

As long as what they did does not leave a lingering smell and everything is clean, I couldn't care less what they did.

If it doesn't affect me negatively I wouldn't care.

Cabin smelling of smoke - that would be my issue. What people did before me - no issue with that. Some people could have issues with me staying in a cabin before them because I am gay, but I don't think that being gay leaves cooties behind. :)

I'm without a doubt that if some people posting around here knew gay people were in their cabin during a previous cruise, they would have a problem with "cooties." But your statement that I quoted here first is my point exactly...

I have only been on 2 cruises, neither cabin smelled of smoke. If hotels can have non-smoking rooms I think cruise ship should too. If smoke lingers in clothes long after you left a smoky bar I would assume it would linger even longer in rugs and curtains. The linen gets changed, do the bedspreads get cleaned to? (And that's another thread!) Perhaps the cabins I have been in had been smoke-free for some time.

When it affects my experience even after they have left.

I've met a lot of gays on cruise ships I've cruised on, but no cooties from any of them. <G> As a matter of fact, I found them intelligent, and tolerant. I'll bet the cabins they stayed in were left in BETTER shape than they found them too. LOL

Agreed!! Count me among the not-so-nice people anymore.

I've always been a considerate smoker but on the last cruise I reached the last straw. Smoking IS permitted is certain places on the ship and I always adhere. I don't smoke around children or old folks. (like me)

It was after dinner and we went to the showroom. We watched while the non-smokers filled up the smoking section giving the ashtrays to the waiter. I promptly went to the bar, got an ashtray, plopped ourselves down at the table and lit up. (a table for 8, occupied by 4) They began waving their hands, coughing, blowing and demanding that we not smoke. It was comical. I pointed out the non-smoking section to them. It took a few minutes but they moved to the proper section.

The same people were seated on the port-side open deck the next day. The smoking area! AGAIN!! Fortunately, there was an open table next to them... Enough is enough.

well said AVLADY i am a smoker and i also adhere to the rules of smoking areas, but what gets my back up IS for years the nonsmokers have petitioned for smokers not to smoke in restaurants and bars, they now have success in us not smoking in restaurants and certain areas in bars, now they want more, the thing is some of the worst moaners are x-smokers, they had their choice to start and to stop but they think they can tell everyone what to do because they succeeded, my other crib is whatever happened to human rights, and freedom of choice, and yes please nonsmokers stay in your designated areas if you dont want smoke in your eyes,

Wish you had been my balcony neighbor on my last cruise! The smoke was so bad we couldn't sit out and enjoy our balcony. I wish they could do sides of ship smoking vs. nonsmoking. As for public areas, there should be smoking and non-smoking as well - not one or the other.

I agree with you, we paid for a balcony that we couldn't use cause the smoke was so bad:D I made a decision though to not book another balcony cause it is just not worth it to me, we will go with an oceanview and save the dollars as we landed up basically only having an oceanview on this last cruise cause we couldn't open the door without the room being invaded by smoke.

Now why would it be hard to believe, we even discussed it with the captain and he said it is a known fact that on that class of ship there are certain areas where the smoke just seems to hang - of course we had a balcony in one of them and smokers on both sides of us - Why would you think it so hard to believe???

you actually bothered the captain about this? i highly doubt this too. how does smoke 'hang' when the ship is moving 22 knots?

I'm sure all you smokers do - I really don't care if you believe it or not I am stating the facts are they were on the SUN Princess for my cruise.

Why would I not be telling the truth?

the thing is some of the worst moaners are x-smokers

Well, I would be one of those. :) Perhaps after I stopped smoking I got more sensitive detecting it, but I can really smell it a long way away.

If you are smoking in a non-smoking section I would most likely say something. If am am in a smoking area (e.g. casino) and the smoking gets too bad, I will leave. I do wish there was an option for truly non-smoking sections in the casino. Just because the one section is designated for smoking does not mean the smoke won't drift into the non-smoking area unless there is some kind of partitioning or special ventilation system.

they had their choice to start and to stop but they think they can tell everyone what to do because they succeeded

I may have suggested to friends or family to stop smoking, but it up to each individual to choose what to do.

my other crib is whatever happened to human rights, and freedom of choice, and yes please nonsmokers stay in your designated areas if you dont want smoke in your eyes

What about my choice not to breathe in second-hand smoke?

And if smoke was kind enough to stay in the smoking section, it would be great, but it doesn't always cooperate.

We were on a 30 day cruise where there were only 8 kids and the captain had his wife and son onboard so we spent a lot of time with them, swimming and in the fun zone etc, my DH mentioned it to him the one day and he said it was a know problem on that class ship. The corridors smelt of smoke, the atrium etc, obviously the smoke hangs cause the air systems cannot handle it.

I am stating the facts as they are, you can doubt what you want!!

Why I find it hard to believe

  1. When the ship is moving the smoke hangs?
  2. The neighbors were on the balcony smoking ALL THE TIME 24/7?
  3. I have never experienced this. Occasionally waft of smoke, yes. Rendering the balcony unusable? No.

You discussed it with the captain?

"Excuse me Captain Stubing, I can smell smoke on my balcony"

Ok, sorry...just having fun but in all seriousness, I do find that hard to believe for reasons 1, 2 & 3 above. Doesn't mean it isn't true, just means that I find it hard to believe.

don't panic. smoking is allowed. princess isn't likely to change their policy until there is a business-related reason. they aren't some two-bit policitian that can but bullied into submission. all the whinning that goes on here has no effect because CCers are a tiny, tiny percentage of princess cruisers.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York aint no two-bit politician that was bullied into banning smoking in all bars and restaurants, the majority of New Yorkers agree with him. And guess what, the bars and restaurants did not lose business as they had predicted. According to them all the fun places would go broke. But that did not happened. Now if we can get those smokers off the sidewalk and away from the entrances.... :D

Thank you, that just seems like a really intolerant person.

Actually I tolerated it, just stayed off my balcony - you have no idea what kind of person I am!!! I was stating the facts as they are and because it doesn't gell with your intolerant attitude you are accusing me of lying and being intolerant etc etc

so you were on a ship, going 22 knots, in the middle of the pacific (where i'm sure there are strong winds - just like the transatlantics i've done ) and smoke was filling your balcony. LOL! oh my, and you could smell it, all over. how horrible  you should've gotten a free cruise.
