BettyC Posted October 2, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2007 We're doing Uniworld's Vienna to Nuremberg the end of April. We have purchased a pre-cruise extension in Vienna, but are wondering if a post-cruise in Prague should be considered instead. We have a stop in Prague, but are not sure where we would rather spend extra days. Would appreciate some opinions.
retiredslug Posted October 2, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2007 We just returned from an Amadeus Amalegro cruise from Budapest to Prague. Loved the small towns along the Danube but Prague was the highlight of the trip. We frequently travel to Europe but had never been to Prague--what a spectacular surprise! Much, much better than Vienna. Can't wait to return--we consider Prague to be in our top favorite cities in the world now.
micked10@earthlink.net Posted October 2, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 2, 2007 We took an Eastern European land trip 4 years ago that included both Vienna and Prague. While Vienna was very nice Prague was absolutely wonderful. Lots to see and do. You have a tough choice. Anyway, you can swing it for both cities? They are totally different. i fyou can only do one, go for Prague. We stayed at a lovely Marriott that was just a few blocks from the town square and almost everything was in walking distance. We hope to go back this spring. You will love it. micked10
lrmorris Posted October 2, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 2, 2007 We, too, just got back from an Amadeus Budapest to Nuremberg two weeks ago and we did Budapest and Prague on our own. Stopped in Vienna along the way. As with the previous posters, we would agree that Prague is much better than Vienna. Enjoy! Linda & Larry

SusanWorldTraveler Posted October 6, 2007 #7 Share Posted October 6, 2007 Prague by all means!!!! It is a fairyland!!!! I adored it. My husband took me last year post-cruise Budapest to Nuremberg and while the 7 day river cruise was great, the two days we spent in Prague was the highlight of my trip. Don't miss it!! Blue Bryce Posted November 18, 2007 #8 Share Posted November 18, 2007 ABSOLUTELY PRAGUE ! In agreeing with all prior posters I must wonder if it is the cities or the cultures that make the Czech vote so unanimous. Anyone?WIT Vienna, as the capital of the Hapsburg empire needed grandios buildings along the Ringstrasse to impress and boulevards for parades to show its power. Prague was secondary.Vienna was heavily bombed and fought over during WWII, Prague was never bombed or fought over at the end of the war. It thus kept it medieval caracter undistroyed and intact and got it's beautiful old buildings meticulously renovated in recent years. It conveys a quaint small town feeling - I think this in combination with a more relaxed (and more preserved) easy going lifestyle makes it so spectacular. micked10@earthlink.net Posted November 19, 2007 #9 Share Posted November 19, 2007 Definitely Prague! Vienna is interesting but like any other Ruropean big city--lots of history and beautiful buildings and heavy traffic. Prague is charming, walkable to most sights and very, very charming. We spent 5 days there 3 years ago after an Eastern european land trip with Tauck and can't wait to go back. Five days was not enough. Lots of history and if you like to shop beautiful bohemian crystal and garnets--they are noted for both. micked10
skandls Posted November 19, 2007 #10 Share Posted November 19, 2007 We were in Prague 3 weeks ago for 5 nights. It was a great city - a lot of fun. You should be able to book your own stay. The hotels are fairly pricey in the city but everything else is very reasonable. We did several walking tours - lots of history - Prague avoided being bombed in WW2. If you are into beer at all do the pub tour - it was a fun way to see something of the real people having a good time. And we got to spend an interesting evening with other english speaking people touring the city. By the way one of our frequent stops was Tesco - a Walmart type store - we would stock up on bottled water and munchies.
Beckaj Posted November 24, 2007 #11 Share Posted November 24, 2007 I have visited both wonderful cities & must say that if it is your first time there ,please consider both. Each is unique in its own way. I don't think you will be disappointed in either ! Happy Travels, Beckaj;)
orchestrapal Posted November 24, 2007 #12 Share Posted November 24, 2007 Prague is charming and very touristy, but IMHO once was enough. Vienna is one of the ARTS capitols of Europe with some of the best symphonic music, opera and great museums besides being a beautiful city. One can go back to Vienna many, many times and always enjoy it. These two cities are very different and it's all in what floats your boat!
retiring soon Posted December 7, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 7, 2007 Prague gets my vote too! It is so beautiful with the castle on the hill you could explore for days, the old town square, the wonderful Charles Bridge & the old Jewish cemetery. ~Jo~:)
