Kyle2020 Posted October 30, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 30, 2007 We are first time cruisers and will be cruising on the Norwegian Sun later this year. I understand that you cannot bring any of your own alcohol on board. Correct? Is this 100% correct or can you bring your own wine onboard? If so, can you store your own wine in your own cabin? If someone could be clear on this point that would be great. Thank you do much!

daisydukes17nnhafx Posted October 30, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 30, 2007 we were just recently on the Dawn and we did bring wine. Wehn we went through security they asked if we had bottles,we said yes. They asked us to go to a certain table to show what we had, but no one escorts you. We went straight to checkin. I understand from someone on board that had we gone to the table they were charging a $15 fee to carry on. I don't know if they would also charge a corking fee at a restaurant. garycarla Posted October 30, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2007 Yes, you can bring your own wine and there is a $15 per bottle charge. Here is a message thread from last week. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=648283
Theodorable Posted October 30, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 30, 2007 On every cruise I have been on, and I have been on lots on all the lines, I have put a box of wine (one of those 5 litre ones) or a few bottles or wine in my checked luggage and have had no problems whatsoever. We were on 2 cruises recently, NCL at the end of September for 8 days and HAL on October 11th for 10 days and I brought wine in my checked bags.... no problem. One tip for you is that I also brought a travel mug with me on board and put some ice in it along with white wine so that I could have a drink by the pool without having to purchase it every time. I only purchased a glass of wine with dinner. I never took the wine to the dining room though. Enjoy your cruise and don't worry about it.
Rowtyd Posted November 1, 2007 #6 Share Posted November 1, 2007 Security saw the bottles in my carry-on bags and yelled "bottles" and one of their helpers picked up my bags and hand delivered them to the table where they charge the $15 corkage per bottle. This was a very common yell during my security check-in...lots of people brought their own wine. You have the option to pay the $15 or they will hold the bottles until the last night of the cruise. I wouldn't take it to the pool either, but to each his own. To drink in your cabin is one thing, to carry it around the ship quite another. That is just my opinion, others may not see anything wrong with taking it to the pool, etc. Just so everyone understands, one of the reasons the cruise have started to enforce some of the policies is for this reason: too many trying to get by with buying too little on the ships. Creepella Posted November 1, 2007 #8 Share Posted November 1, 2007 Can you pay corkage for rye or is it just for wine? :D
DAGVBSB Posted November 2, 2007 #9 Share Posted November 2, 2007 Can you pay corkage for rye or is it just for wine? :D All Hard Liquors are banned and confiscated. Wine has a $15 per bottle corkage fee and your bottles are marked with a sticker and you can take them to the dinning room where the waiter will open them at no additional charge. You can order a bar set-up for your room with hard liquor. All bags, checked and carry on are x-rayed and/or searched. Some alcohol gets through, some does not and you have to pay the fee. NCL is considered the most thourough in checking luggage for alcohol.

Rare Cruise Raider Posted November 18, 2007 #11 Share Posted November 18, 2007 Does the $15 fee apply to each bottle or do they allow you to bring two on free of charge like many of the other cruiselines?
taxmantoo Posted November 18, 2007 #12 Share Posted November 18, 2007 Forgive my ignorance, but what is meant by "bar setup"? "Bar setup" simply involves calling the NCL Ship Co-ordinator for your ship before sailing and ordering bottles of liquor for your room prior to embarkation. Does the $15 fee apply to each bottle or do they allow you to bring two on free of charge like many of the other cruiselines? It is $15 per bottle with no freebies allowed. Nita I'm taking wine to the dining room because it is the wine we like, and they don't carry it. I will find out of there is a way to drop it off earlier with the waiter or sommelier and just have it brought to the table, but I have no problem carrying it in with us. It's not a $3 bottle, and I have no problem paying the corkage at boarding.
Wefewee Posted November 19, 2007 #16 Share Posted November 19, 2007 Many thanks to all members for the information on taking wine and other alcohol onboard! We are booked for an April Jewel cruise, our second cruise ever. Our first was on MSC and they allowed wine bought at the onboard duty free shop to be taken to the dining room and without a corkage fee. Does anyone know if NCL allows this and, what is the average price for a bottle of wine actually purchased in any of the dining rooms? If the price is reasonable, I wouldn't bother trying to take bottles on.

The corkage fee option is not available and they will keep the wine until your last night on board. Here is a "text" version of the most current NCL wine list. You will find that most wines are priced a little less than you would pay at a fine restaurant in your area.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Nita was referring to people who pour a glass of wine in their cabin and take it into the dining room. I can't imagine anyone has a problem with you bringing an unopen bottle with you. That's supposably why they charge the corking fee.

BellaOnline Posted November 22, 2007 #21 Share Posted November 22, 2007 We will be bringing our own wine on board, as I am a wine writer and we have special wines they don't have on the wine list. We talked with NCL and they said to keep the wine in a carry-on when you get to the ship and hand it over to the steward there. They will see it gets to your cabin and you can put the $15/bottle fee onto your ship account. Note that I'm not recommending you carry your wine on your plane trip - that would be illegal. I mean that when you land, you redo your packing so that the wine bottles are now out in a carry on you can hand to the ship crew. Really, the markup for wines offered on NCL are less than we see in restaurants in the area. It's a "bargain" as far as eating out and getting wine with your meal. So unless you're bringing in a special wine like we are, it is a good deal to get the bottle of wine with your meal from the list that NCL offers. BellaOnline Posted November 22, 2007 #25 Share Posted November 22, 2007 Yes, the only way we could bring our wine from home to Hawaii is in our luggage :) It just has to be in the checked luggage for security reasons. Gone are the days when we'd go to Napa Valley and carry on a six-pack of wine each ...
