Luggage from hotel to ship

We are not exactly newbies but we've never been in port a day ahead. When the hotel drops us off at the pier with our luggage we would like to take it aboard ourselves so that we can unpack as soon as we get our room. Is this possible? Is it frowned upon? We will have only one 28" and one carry-on each and they hook together so it is no problem to wheel it on ourselves. Will we have to wait while they screen the bags? How does this work? We would like to do the reverse on the way home. We'll be getting a taxi to a rental car place and touring the city all day ourselves before a late flight home. We pack lightly and would like to be more in control of our belongings and not waste time looking through the big corrells of luggage. Thanks for any help.

They do screen each piece so the problem is that I don't think that the 28" piece will fit on the security screener. Most of the security screeners are similar to what you see at the airport so for bags that are smaller in size you can take them on yourself. For those bags they will screen them as they do when you get on the ship normally.

Going home you could take all the bags off yourself. The challenge is that when you get off the ship depending on where you dock sometimes it is a challenge to walk down the gangplank set up that they have with so many bags. But you could do it. When you are on the ship ask the reception desk if it would be OK and what the docking facilities are like when you get off the ship.

The problem may be not having your cabin ready!!! You don't want to have to schlepp your stufff all around the ship while you wait!

Pack what you need immediately in your carry-on, and check the other bag! Since it's only 1 bag, it won't take long to unpack it whenever you get it! Start your vacation without a lot of baggage!

It's not a problem to carry your luggage off the ship when leaving, but you cannot do it when embarking. The scanner will fit only your carry on, so anything larger will have to be given to the porters on the dock. Also, it's way too crowded in the terminal to allow people to be dragging all their luggage in the long check in lines. And, do you really want to be dragging all that around the ship while waiting for your cabin to be ready, not to mention the crowded elevators may mean carrying all your stuff up flights of stairs? Not a fun way to start the cruise.
