what ship came back sick?

Recommended Posts

Based on PAX count there were 10%+ of the pax ill. I didn't see a statment on how many crew were sick, but overall that is a high percentage.

I'll stick to RCL and bigger ships where it takes more sick to get to 10%:D

Seems like the ship was not well cleaned or some crew were sick and didn't let that out instead perhaps making others sick.

WOW! Interesting to read the events. I especially liked the Navigator crew member found with "white powder taped to his leg" which turned out not to be cocaine that he bought. HAHAHAHAHA I wonder if he was mad? ;)

And the January entry that said 2 tenders full of passengers had to stay in the water for 2 hours because the weather was too bad to return to the ship

One of the most interesting things on that site although not any RCL ships, was the fact that 2 seperate pedophiles were kicked off two seperate ships since January.

That only goes to show that parents who think they can just turn their kids loose on a ship and that they will be fine are sadly mistaken.

They can clean till the cows come home but if one person is infected, all their efforts will be in vain. The virus is brought to the ship by a passenger, since the crew all live aboard it's not created there by one of them, unless they are exposed on a shore leave. One infected person going through the buffet, touching door handles, elevator buttons and counter tops can spread the virus. The bad part is a person can be contagious for up to two weeks after being infected and not even realize it.

I think this is the reason once it gets onto a ship (or into a hotel, school, office building or any other place humans are present) it is so hard to control. People want to get up and out before they should, without consideration for others. Once crew get ahold of it, they can pass it amongst each other without intending to.

We've had a few students out with stomache "flu" recently, but certainly not at epidemic levels. Even if it were 10% of the school it would be boring news for the media, reporting about cruise ships having a virus is far more interesting to them.

Actually at the beginning of last year (or end of 06), there was a child pornographer arrested when they docked back in the states on one of the RCCL ships. Can't remember which one and the link is long gone.

The police had gone to his home to arrest him. He wasn't there, was on a cruise. So they sent the FL police to meet him at the terminal.

Just paid for our season tickets too. We upgraded to club level seating.......hope it is worth it!

I think the website is quite interesting! I go to it a few times a week to see what is happening in the cruising world.

So, this has just confirmed my decision not to eat at the buffet.

It is not just the buffet. You can catch it by touching the handrails, elevator buttons, door handles, writing implements, telephones, etc. This holds true for both inside and outside of your cabin.

I have met some people who have gotten Noro who never went near the buffet... ;)

By the way, don't touch the menus or the armrests in the theater either...

Outbreaks actually happen almost weekly...it's only when a large number of passengers are impacted that it makes the news.

If you want to avoid intestinal discomfort, just build your intestinal immune system prior to boarding. It's easy to avoid getting sick on a cruise.

For the 2 weeks prior to the cruise, take 1 DanActive, and 1 Activia daily. Both are available in your grocery store with the other yougurt products. They will fill your digestive system with billions of good bacteria....each bacteria has it's own defense to kill other (bad) bacteria and viruses.

It has a LOT to do with the ship and the training and quality of the ship's crew. Norovirus is transmitted by (put down your fork and swallow first) fecal-oral contact. The infected person who fails to keep his or her hands clean can spread the virus around to railings, buttons and door knobs. However, a vigilant crew will have a continuous and constant cleaning routine that will get the virus before it can spread much, more cleaning equals fewer infections. The ship's policies and procedures will also include things such as antibacterial wipes at the restaurants, gloved crew serving food rather than letting the passengers serve themselves and crew alert to ill passengers for potential isolation.

It's rare that a large ship can return from a cruise without at least a few cases of illness so it's up to the line and the crew, hence the "ship" to isolate and destroy the bugs before they can spread to more crew and passengers.

A while back, the Disney Magic returned "sick". She went out again the next week and again returned sick. DCL tied her up for a week and gave the ship a thorough cleaning and initiated a lot of very strict infection control procedures. This cleaned the ship and exceeded the virus incubation time so infected crew were able to be isolated. Neither DCL ship has been sick since which is a condiderable accomplishment considering the number of runny-nosed, dirty-handed kids aboard every week.

So in fact it is the ship that can be a sick ship if you consider the line management and crew training as a part of the ship.

Ok totally off original topic but I was looking at those events cruise by cruise that I have personally been on and I found something written by ME

The odd thing is that I didn't post it there, I posted it here. So they take things from this board and post it there?????

That was odd.
