Need urgent info re smoking on Tahitian

We were on the TP on a trip to Tahiti last summer. I too am very sensitive to cig. smoke and I did not notice any on the deck and we ate lunch there every sea day. We sat in the aft area outside the buffet. We also sat in by the pool and did not notice any either. I don't have health issues, but do have a strong sensitivity to smoking and I had no problem. I did notice a smoke smell in the casino and because we had a balcony, we did notice smoke from our neighbors a couple of times and we just went back inside, while they were smoking. Kind of irritating since that was our first and probably last time we will splurge on a balcony.

We were there for our 40th anniversary and it was a trip of a lifetime. It is paradise. Have you considered a renewal of vows? We did and it was wonderful. If Leni is still there, she did a great job and went out of her way to make it special. I sure would hate to miss a trip to South Polynesia, there is no place on earth like it.

Enjoy your anniversary where ever it leads you !!:)

Hope you are able to go and enjoy a trip to paradise, don't think you will regret it.

Thanks for your comments. Now I want to go again!! Again, we won't be in the casino, and we're in an inside stateroom. It's just the sea days I'm worried about. The thing that alarmed me initially was when I looked at the deck plans and saw how narrow the ship was. If the wind was blowing towards me, I wouldn't be able to sit at the pool. I'll have to look again, and see if they have chairs along the outside of the ship.

Thanks for your good wishs!

I am just off the crown (over 3,000 people). I smoke, so I paid attention to where it was allowed. There wasn't any smoking by the pool, and only a VERY few tables that had an ashtray on the port side of the deck. There were VERY few people on the Promenade deck that smoked. I limited mine to my balcony. While some folks say that smokers do not notice smoke - such is not the case. On the entire cruise, I smelled smoke ONE time while walking down the hallway to my cabin. While Princess may not be "non smoking", they certainly aren't what I'd call smoker friendly. There were fewer places where smoking was allowed than there was on the RCL Serenade of Seas.

That's interesting. We were on the RC explorer, and we found because it was so large, they allowed smoking areas in virtually every bar. Because everything was open (no walls) after lunch time I couldn't walk anywhere without smelling smoke. AFter that we went on the Legend, thinking that being closed off would be better, and it was fine.

Thanks for your reply!

Please, where did you get this information?

I was on a Princess ship in January and only one side of the outdoor pool area and upper sun deck was smoking.

The agent that was booking our cruise for next March told us. She seemed to have some notation in her book. She brought up the subject, not us.

We were on the Tahitian last June and I cannot remember a problem with cigarette smoke on the open decks, remember on sea days the ship will be moving at 15-20 knots and it will also be quite windy so smoke generally clears quite quickly.

In over 40 cruises and on every one except for the R3, I have seen people, including ship officers:eek: and crew smoking in the No Smoking areas on the outside decks. maybe the OP should cancel.

I agree the original poster should cancel, but not for the reason you state. I have seen very few people on Princess ships smoking outside of the designated smoking areas. I have seen a lot of non-smokers go into the designated smoking areas and then complain about the smoke, however.

No matter, most of the posts here have encouraged the original poster not to cancel but she’s not listening…a vacation shouldn’t be fraught with worry, legitimate or not. Cancel!

On most ships we have been on, one side is for smoking and one side not (excluding staterooms). On Diamond the smoking side continued until you came close to the pizza and hamburger section and then the smoking was not allowed. This was nice. Other than a smoker next to our balcony we were not bothered by it at all.

Actually on the crown, smoking was allowed in one bar only...no others. The casino was no smoking at least one night on the cruise. I don't know about their smaller ships, but there just was not a smell of smoke in any of the public interior areas of the Crown.

Hope this picture of the Tahitian Princess helps.

Thanks for the pic! It looks beautiful!

It's Sunday now. OUr agent is still waiting to talk to a Princess person, but I'm softening.

The only thing confusing me is the deck plans- it looks like you have to walk through a cigar bar to get to the dining room??

Wow – did you cancel yet? There are no cigar lounges outside any Princess dining rooms. That would kind of defeat the purpose of making the dining room smoke-free, wouldn’t it?

If you found a cruise line that met your requirements, I would stick with them. Since you seem to have a very low tolerance to smoke what would be acceptable to most of us, would seem to put you over the edge. Cruises do not come cheap and I would not risk my cruise dollar. You might try Oceana or Azamara both restrict smoking to a very small area.

From my experience Oceania is the most smoking restrictive cruise line. You should be able to totally avoid the smoking. Given your sensitivity to the smoking, generally cruising in probably not the best vacation. A lot of nice places in North American that have serious restrictions on smoking. Like the Ohio mentioned. IL is now non smoking as is CA.

Research Oceania and I think you will find smoking is not an issue unless you are a serious smoier and do not like the restrictions. It is a very nice cruise line with some really good ports.

I think that you will have a high probability of being disappointed given the information that you have provided on your posts on almost any other Mass Market cruise line. Why put yourself though the misery? Cruising does not have to be for everybody. As the article states, the cruises lines that have tried to totally eliminate smoking have not been successful. Supply and demand, I suppose.

Good luck.

Thanks again, everyone.

I'd love to go on the Paul Gaugin, but we just can't afford that. I think we may postpone until next spring so I can do a bit more research.

The Tahitian princess won't be in Tahiti next spring, so either do it this fall or not on the Tahitian.

I checked out the floor plans for the TP and you go through the Club Bar on one side - we've been on both the TP and PP and never had any smoke issues there. If th OP looked at a brochure from Princess, it would be obvious that it isn't a cigar bar - I don't even think there's one of those on board, is there?

Probably not a hoax, but certainly someone who is extremely spontaneous in her decisions. I would have fully researched BEFORE making a reservation for the cruise. That's what makes CC so great - the ability to research before hand.

How on earth could one make such an absurd assumption? I really think this thread is a hoax.

I simply looked at the deck plans.

And in the faq it states that the club bar is the only place that cigar smoking is allowed.

If you look at the deck plan, the bar is right beside the restaurant. I'm sure it's fine way inside, but I wouldn't be able to sit at a table near that entrance.

When I sailed Pacific Princess 2, the Club Bar, just outside the dining room, was non smoking. Could you give us a link to the FAQ that you found this information in? As far as I know, cigar smoking is restricted to only one place on the bigger ships and only on deck on the smaller ships.

Meantime, this is what I got from the FAQs regarding cigar smoking:

Smoking is not allowed in the dining rooms, or any other food service area, or in the show lounges and theaters. Smoking is permitted in staterooms, stateroom balconies, and designated areas. As a courtesy to your fellow passengers, please refrain from smoking pipes and cigars in all public rooms.

My wife & I were on the Tahitian 1 1/2 years ago & smoking was a hot subject then too!

I can honestly say that smoke doesn't bother me too much & if it does I can just leave. The ONLY place where I ever recall a smoke issue (for me) was in the casino & I like to play blackjack. If there is any place that it should be banned is in the casino, where people are trying to spend money.

Smoking has been banned from all restaurants & public places in our area for a number of years now. I would have noticed if it was an issue.

I will not promise that you will not came acreoss it, but other than the casino it was negligable!

I don't know if this comes too late, but last September we did the 12-day Tahiti to Hawaii cruise on the TP and didn't notice any prevelance of smoke. I can say for absolute certain that smoking is NOT allowed in the Club Bar (outside the diningroom.) I do not recall smoking being allowed anywhere except the casino (and they even had at least 1 non-smoking night) and the little lounge sort of attched to the casino, and outside on the Port side around the pool. Sitting on the Starboard side, I could not smell smoke at all. I can't be 100% certain, but I do not believe smoking was allowed on the rear deck outside the Horizon Court.

The only things that could be problematic are that smoking is allowed in cabins and cabin balconies, and the fact that the photo gallery is sort of part of the Casino area. Otherwise, I don't think you should have any problem avoiding smoke. The TP is an absolutely beautiful ship with a wonderful staff and crew, and the ports of French Polynesia are beautiful beyond words.

Certainly, if you think your concern about avoiding cigarette smoke would cause you more stress than the joy the cruise would afford, perhaps a different cruise would be more to your liking. But, we felt this was truly a once in a lifetime experience and wouldn't have traded it for the world. And, as mentioned above, the TP leaves French Polynesia after 2008 with no Princess ships (nor any ships other than the PG, to my knowledge) scheduled to take her place. So, if you want to experience French Polynesia on a cruise, this might be your best bet.

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a wonderful anniversary celebration!
