Yes, the piano bar is non smoking and also the Crows Nest (at least on the

Noordam). That is why the 4 smoking tables and bar in the Ocean Bar are so

important to smokers. We could not even smoke or get into the Oak Room one night on the Noordam as the were having Renewal of Vows there. Why?

Are you certain about the Crow's Nest on the Noordam?

On the Volendam and the Amsterdam, they had a couple tables with ashtrays, as well as the back half of the bar itself.

Definently NOT alone in that... Much easier to just walk away... By the way Greg your post on this particular thread have been very insightful for me... (Also you are not always that bombastic :) Thank you..

You're welcome, Jim ... and thank you! I appreciate it. No, I'm not that bombastic. It was a moniker assigned to me in another area of CC by someone who had come here, whipped up some trouble, and then left. I adopted it as my own in an attempt to make light of their being nasty ... and found I liked it. :)

I can understand all EXCEPT Lido Bar. Why? It's outdoors for God sake!

Blue skies ...

I thought the Lido bar was at the midship pool that was covered. Isn't the bar at the aft pool smoking?

Greg, I know you are very respectful of smokers and just leave if it annoys you. My point is that with 4 smoking tables in the Ocean Bar (on the Noordam) which we get ther very early to get one, why do non smokers insist

on sitting there and then complaining. Can't we just have aour small spaces, and you can have the other 98% of the ship. Gayle

I understand and agree, Gayle. You'll get no argument from me on that point.

If I'm sitting there with my mother and she is smoking, I do have a right to sit there so long as I recognize that if I'm bothered by the smoke I should scoot. But, it annoys me to see fellow non-smokers sitting in the smoking area and loudly complaining about the smokers.

Actually, the sitting area just abaft the bar in the Crows Nest is smoking, as well as that half of the bar. I like to sit there because i can get a good view of the whole Crows Nest.

Explorers Lounge, Lido (Dolphin Bar), and maybe ?? Piano Bar

The Explorer's Lounge doesn't have a "bar" so to speak ... except for aboard the Eurodam. I wonder if that bar will be smoking or not.

The Sports Bar is also smoking.

Sports bar is non smoking on the Veendam.

We used to be able to sit there and have a drink while Ruth was playing the slots but no more. Have to go to the Oceans bar or go outside...

Ah ... ok. Well, it is definitely smoking on the Rotterdam as well as on the Noordam and the other Vista ships.

Thank you for that information. Will give me a place to relax while she spends "OUR" money.....

She never looses.

I put the money in and she keeps what comes out....Is that justice or what.....

The question was which bars are non-smoking so I didn't mention Sports Bar as most as far as I have always observed are smoking permitted. Casino (Sports) Bar on Maasdam is smoking permitted and even on nights when the Casino had a No Smoking Night, smoking was permitted there.

 I call all the lounges that as well as bar; I call all the bars, bars.

The "S" class ships do not have an aft pool bar. They only have a service window where stewards or guests can go pick up drinks. A bartender has a small work area only.

Greg, We have been on the Noordam three times since Jan. 06 when there was

a small smoking area in the Crows Nest. The last three trips the Crows Nest is smoke free. we have to leave and go to the Oak Room, if they are not having a function in there.Maybe you all can see our point, please don't take

up the few smoking tables we have left. Have seen it many times, people sit

in the smoking section and immediatly remove the ash tray.

I'm not really grasping why non-smokers would knowingly sit in the smoking section, unless they're with people who are smokers???

Aren't there enough tables in the non-smoking sections?

Indeed?

Well, it must vary from ship to ship across the fleet.

The area just abaft the bar in the crows nest was still smoking on the Rotterdam this January, just as it was smoking when I was aboard the Noordam in Jan 07. But, things do change.

Maasdam's Crow's Nest bar (which is off-center on the starboard side) was "smoking ok" as of April

There's more than sufficient tables in the non-smoking section for all the non-smokers. With room left over.

So, "why" do non-smokers sit in the smoking section? Who knows. Probably lots of reasons. The fact remains, though that they do.

What is, is.

We like sitting at the bar but are non-smokers. We simply enjoy chatting with bartenders we probably have known from many cruises and though we are non-smokers sitting in a smoking section, we never thought we were 'doing something wrong." It isn't as though there is a bar (the physical bar where bartenders work and guests occupy the stools ;) ) for smokers and another for non-smokers. There's only one.

It has been by far the norm that the bar may seat about 12 people and only one or two smoke ....we have observed this cruise after cruise. Sure once in a while there are a few more smokers.

The problem isn't nonsmokers in the smoking areas, it's nonsmokers in the smoking area who treat the smokers like they are less than human.

I know all the nonsmokers here say they would get up and leave if it bothered them, yet later on the Rev. admitted he has seen nonsmokers acting rudely toward smokers in the smoking section.

I went into the Oak Room on my cruise, it's clearly a smoking room, there are ashtrays everywhere, and yet when I lit up my cigarette I got dirty looks from a man who was sitting in there yacking loudly on his cellphone.

I have not been following this bourd much, however just a few observations.

1. When I began cruising, I was a smoker, [now reformed], but, I found cruising so relaxing, that I had no real need to smoke.

2. As in all things the smaller minorities are usually the most vocal, this seems to be true with the smoking issue, especially when the needs of a minority group adversely affect a quieter, but long suffering majority.

3. On cruise ships, the worst area would normally be the casino, so, unless my wife and I go there, first thing in the morning, we find the atmosphere unbearable, and I might add to this on most ships the stores are usually closeby, and they also get much more than a mild puff of smoke.

4. 'Smoking', and 'non smoking' sections are not effective, since smoke tends to drift.

Are there any answers? in the short term possibly not, but I will finish with a true story, taking place right now in Victoria, Canada.

A gentleman whose family has owned a tobacconist's store, for over ninety years, has had his store deemed a 'Heratage Site'. HOWEVER, the Ministry of Health has just given him thirty days to cover up the word 'Tobacconist', to comply with new adverising laws! Problem! IF he does so, he can be hit with such a fine by the Heratage Society, that he might have to declare bankruptcy!

I have not smoked for about five years, however, having written this, I have a great desire to smoke!

Hi, mr green! The 28th of this month will be 8 years since I quit the cigs.:o Truly, it would have been so much easier for me to just stop eating than quitting smoking, and I did struggle pathetically with it, but never went back. I understand the plight of smokers, but now that I've beat my own personal addiction, I just REALLY don't want to be around smoke anymore.

Weird thing, tho... every once in a while, out of nowhere, I get that old demonic urge. But then, I realize "EWWWWWWWWW! NO!"
