Smoking Policy from a Brits point of view!

Recommended Posts

Evidently they do - Carnival Paradise had no trouble filling cabins, but they didn't spend money in the casino or bars - it was not financially viable operation. And many people here post that the casinos are empty on no-smoking nights.

Unless you think smokers also drink and gamble more then non-smokers. Sort of a triple threat:D

In the years given statistics - from 1982 - 2006 - there were actually 8 years that the number of deaths rose year to year. Don't want to go back to look - but I think you said - or at least implied - that with better enforcement there was significant improvement. I don't see it - it took from 1992 to 2006 for the percentage of traffic fatalities caused by drunk driving to fall by 10% - 14 years - that's less than 1% reduction per year - that's not very significant at least in my opinion. And that's still almost 16,000 people - killed by another legal drug - and yet I don't see many screaming for a ban on booze.

Your stats show a downward trend

To bring this back to topic a bit non-smoking seemd to be good business for the cruise lines.

More and more smoking rules are being put into place.

As less and less folks smoke the trend will not change back to more smoking.

And that seems to be a fact no matter how you feel about smoking.

I'm sure a few like our friend from MD will find another vacation but most of us will follow the rules and have agreat time...as we have done before.

Quick, someone should tell the Brits that their smoking ban isn't hurting businesses.

Thanks for pointing out the smoking ban is not responsible for hurting business. Here is a quote from your article:

"However, the credit crunch, not the smoking ban, was pinpointed as the primary reason for such a bleak year for many pubs."

The teenager pictured below doesn't like the smoking ban though.

Always a good idea to read what you post:)

smoking is a dying pastime (in the truest sense of the word) and it's only a matter of time before it is outlawed from all public places worldwide

interestingly, there was a piece in the Daily Mirror yesterday, showing that, depsite predictions otherwise, 234,060 people has quit smoking since the ban was introduced in England last summer, and, more importantly, only 3% of pubs had reported a bad impact on business

The smoking ban has been hailed as the single most important health measure for a generation, after record numbers kicked the habit

the report will be officially published on the first anniversary of the ban coming into effect on July 1st

royal caribbean, as with other cruise lines, will eventually be forced to come to heel on this issue, and not a moment too soon

I was on NOS recently, in the casino, and the smoke was so bad that I had to leave a winning streak to go get some air and clear my eyes

nasty, disgusting habit, the sooner it's completely banned the better

Great post! You're exactly right.

You are absolutely correct. The current "tests" of non-smoking nights in the casinos, while it will turn out they proved nothing, will eventually result in non-smoking, sooner rather than later. Next, will be the balconies, leaving only 1 side of the ship for smoking. The European River Cruise business is booming with more and more ships being buit. On about 90% of these ships, smoking is only allowed on the Sun Deck. I saw first hand that smokers are still booking these cruises, including myself.

These are interesting statistics printed by the daily Mirror. It would have been great if they could also mention how many people started smoking during the same time.

Allie if you spend only half as much time and effort in the rest of your life as you do in defending your right to pollute the world and continue to puff away regardless of anyone else's rights....... well, you must be a very successful person.;) We could all go on and on ad nauseum but really, there's no point because the same old arguments and "facts" get quoted. Thank goodness most of the world is seeing sense. Puff away my dear, just don't do it in my space.

LOL:D If one particular unnamed person spent half as much time and effort as she does on this board, she could have stopped smoking AND found a cure for cancer by now.;)

I am just curious about what you thought was nonsense about that post? I am interested in your opinion, please don't take offense by me asking that. And if you don't want to explain, no biggie.

Gleaned from the same survey:

"The smoking legislation was second out of the reasons for a fall in trade, followed by budget hikes on alcohol tax, the rising cost of raw materials and last summer’s poor weather."

So what you're saying is that the smoking legislation hasn't had a negative effect on businesses? Do I have that right?

So people don't die from cigarette smoking?

Oh, I get it, It's all made up:D

Keep on believing every thing you read. I think I read somewhere, ***** causes blindness, or maybe it was sitting to close to the TV causes cancer. To answer your question, Smoking in and by itself does not CAUSE anything, but may CONTIBUTE to disease along with hundreds of other things. If the EPA SAYS 3000 people will die from SHS, and a non-smoking advocate group says 25,000, who made what up?

Oh, so now you're against drinking on vacation and gambling?

I have no problem admitting I went to Atlantic City twice to gamble and that I had 1 Corona with my crabs yesterday before switching to Pepsi.

Nice attempt at diversion - but the Carnival Paradise - the first mass market line non-smoking ship - still failed as is no more.

Another reason for smokers to be proud:D

That's purely an opinion - the Carnival Paradise failed. The Celebrity changes are too new to know what the effect will be.

If it were that good for business - they'd have done away with it already - they haven't.

At one time alcohol was vilified here - outlawed - and it was repealed. Heck, VA just killed a smoking ban yet again, and Norfolk repealed a ban they had passed. Don't be so sure of yourself - those Prohibition folks sure were and we see where that ended up :)

I follow the rules - always have - I just fight against them. And yes, if they ban smoking or smoking on balconies - I will go to another line - or back to land based vacations. I vote with my money - just like I do here at home - I spend as much leisure time and money as possible in PA and VA.

It's like here in MD - they'll claim the purchase of cigarettes has dropped drastically to point to the success of their ban - that if less are bought, then people must be giving up smoking. Reality is that MD taxed them outrageously and is a small state and we can drive to other states that don't tax them as heavily. Even with the price of gas as it is, I can save enough on cigs to more than justify the trip to another state. I usually just do it when I'm in those states for other reasons - but I know many people who drive elsewhere to buy cigarettes.

Why do you care how I spend my time? Are you from the gov't and here to tell me what to spend my free time on? And yes, I'm a very successful person - even though I'm a big bad smoker *GASP*

Actually no, after the last thread on this I found the actual WHO study - interesting how none of the anti-smokers could counter that - other than that half baked swat it saying it's results were bought and paid for - lol - by the WHO - huge anti-smoking group.

There is a huge portion of this earth that doesn't have any smoking bans - they are kinda busy with other things. BTW, the air pollution caused in the rest of the world is way more likely to kill you than anything you are exposed to here or a cruise ship. But of course you can't see further than your own little bubble. Sure - I'll puff away - and if you aren't in my space you won't be effected - if you are, you chose to be there :)

If we non-smokers would, as one voice, demand a total smoking ban onboard, the cruise lines would listen. Money talks and they will do whatever it takes to make the large majority of non-smokers happy because that is the better business decision.
