Lady Patsy Posted November 13, 2008 #26 Share Posted November 13, 2008 So I'm 23 and going with my 76 yo godmother on RCCL's Liberty of the Seas end of August. I'm a little worried though...I mean, she can walk and everything like that but does anyone think she'd feel out of place or anything? It's kinda strange how I really can't recall what the age demographic has been on my more recent cruises. I guess I'm just more oblivious than I thought! She will not be the only 76 yr. old aboard and they have activities for all ages. I am sure she will enjoy herself. You probably won't be able to keep up with her. Macie4 Posted December 6, 2008 #29 Share Posted December 6, 2008 I am 81 years and this is my third cruise. On top of it I am alone but find that everyone is friendly and great to be around. Love the Casino also. LOL
Rare Roz Posted December 6, 2008 #30 Share Posted December 6, 2008 Good for you, Macie! I'm in my 50s, and am always encouraged when I meet cruisers in their 80s and 90s who are out enjoying themselves. Roz

flsunnymommy Posted December 21, 2008 #32 Share Posted December 21, 2008 Any ideas to help convince my mother and grandmother (mid 80s) to go on a cruise with my son and I? I can tell my grandmother wants to go, but is coming up with every excuse she can (and I am paying) She walks with a walker that has a stool so she can stop and rest. She loves to read and knit which she can still do on the cruise. She has never been on a real vacation and she so deserves one. She is embarassed because she has difficulty eating and walking. I know if she would go and relax she would have a great time. We are planning to go on RCL Grandruer of the Seas Jan 15-19 with a day in Cozumel. Any suggestions? Rare Roz Posted December 21, 2008 #33 Share Posted December 21, 2008 Since she has trouble walking, I would pick a smaller ship. I think once she gets on the ship and sees other people her age, some of whom are going to have the same problems, she'll feel better. Roz
NJGRANNY Posted January 28, 2009 #34 Share Posted January 28, 2009 We were on a cruise last year and, while talking to two ladies, they mentioned that they had their 70+ mother with them and had surprised her by taking her zip lining!!!!! God bless her, she apparently did well.

Pokeynose Posted February 17, 2009 #37 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Luv2Cruz, I thought the little bug was cute, didn't mean for you to remove it. I just wasn't awake yet and of course my cataracts are making it hard to read, getting rid of them starting next mon. A little nervous but it needs to be done.:D
Wants2cruise Posted February 18, 2009 #38 Share Posted February 18, 2009 A dear family friend came to my high school graduation. He was 94 and his wife was 91 years young. He looked and acted at least 30 years younger. I asked him about his cruises and how he stayed so young. He informed me that he played shuffle board all day and danced all night. If I had managed to go on a cruise with him, I honestly don't think that I could have kept up with him.
lcand1923 Posted February 20, 2009 #39 Share Posted February 20, 2009 flsunnymommy, If your grandmother uses a walker, pick a smaller ship and make certain you have her in a cabin near the elevator. Those hallways get very long when you need to travel them for each meal. Regarding the eating, make certain you get a table for just the four of you. If the eating problem is like my Dad's (bum shoulder so he drops his food), try to sit at the table so no one else can see her. If the problem is diet, I'm certain you can work that out with the cruise line. Book the cruise, pay for the cruise and tell your mother and grandmother that the only present you want for your birthday is their presence on the cruise ship. Linda74 Posted February 20, 2009 #40 Share Posted February 20, 2009 I am bringing my 87 year old mother on her first cruise in May. It is a repo on Princess from San Juan to NY. My husband passed away in December and she suggested it as she knew how much we loved to travel. I will let you all know if she is too old to cruise when we get back!!!! VampyBuff Posted March 28, 2009 Author #44 Share Posted March 28, 2009 I know this is a very (very) delayed response, but just as an update, we both had a wonderful time =) The only place we ran into any trouble was all the walking on the private beach of Haiti, and then someone from the ship helped us out with a sand wheelchair. Her all time best part of the trip was when we went to Johnny Rockets and the waiters put on Elvis for her and they got up and were dancing =) Never thought I'd see that happen! I'm thinking maybe Hawaii soon enough.
katiel53 Posted May 23, 2009 #45 Share Posted May 23, 2009 Last October my husband and I along with my sister, her husband and whole family cruised on Royal Caribbean to celebrate my father's 95th birthday. Up until August of last year, he played golf 5 mornings a week. He developed cellulitis in August so that was a really big setback for him. He used a scooter on the ship and had the best time. He doesn't get to see his grandchildren and great grands often. My dad lives in Florida as do my husband and I. The grands on this cruise live in NY, AL and England. The greats live in England and AL. It was so much fun seeing Pop with everyone. We had almost 20 people on this cruise and we were set up at 2 tables. He moved around every night. I think his only regret was that my son, daughter-in-law and grand couldn't make the trip. In October we are going on Glory for his 96th birthday celebration. This year it will just be DH and I and sister and her husband. I know it will be fun. Pop is planning to start playing golf again next month, (his birthday is really June 15, but we all can't cruise then.) I'm sure he will play and enjoy his time--albeit he has to play from a cart rather than walking as he previously did. He might get a scooter again for Glory. This time though, I know he will be off that scooter so he can play the slots or Craps in the casino. Last year he didn't get off the scooter much, so he couldn't play. Sorry for talking so much, but I don't think you can be too old to cruise. By the way, my parents never started cruising until my dad turned 66 or 67. They cruised at least once a year from then on and even after my Mom passed away, my sister and I have cruised with him at least once a year. Thanks for reading. I love my dad and treasure all the time we get to spend together.

I agree that you can't be too old to cruise. However, it helps if you have wonderful family support like yours. I hope you continue to enjoy many more cruises with your dad. Okiguy Posted June 8, 2009 #47 Share Posted June 8, 2009 You will find lots of folks your parents age on any cruise on any cruise line. Since you are paying the bill, cost should not be a consideration but some of the folks who lived through the depression and its aftermath are let's say "frugal" beyond reason! My parents never took a vacation anywhere that they could not drive, and it is a shame what fun they missed if they had been a little more adventurous. Go for it... jonyyuma Posted August 26, 2009 #50 Share Posted August 26, 2009 Pokeynose, Do not sweat the repair of your eyes. It will be a blessing to be rid of the cararacts, just don't wait too long. I put my last one off until, it closed in solid. I could not see out of that eye at all, just like looking at shower curtain. Then you will have trouble with distances, using only one eye.Afterwards vision was nearly perfect. JY.
