Smoking

1st, smoke outside of the ship just blows away--pretty quickly, I might add! You shouldn't be bothered on your balcony, especially while the ship is moving--the wind is pretty strong out there!

Most ships limit smoking to 1 or 2 bar areas--if you stay in the non-smoking places, no problem!

On the outside decks, only 1 side of the ship is designated "smoking"--you'll have no problem avoiding it.

Thanks that is great to know I just read some reviews that said they had trouble with all the smoke. I was just curious to know:p

Hopefully you will be fine. Avoid areas of the ship where smoking is permitted or walk on the other side of the room.

If you have someone who smokes a great deal next to your cabin it could be a problem but hopefully you won't have that as an issue.

These smoking threads usually bring out the morality police...:D

You will find that the Starboard (Right side facing forward) side of most ships is the smoking side and the port side is non-smoking.. Depending on which cruise line you go on, will depend on if smoking is allowed in the cabins.. (RCCL no smoking in the cabins, CCL yup you can smoke in the cabin) As far as the neighbors balcony and IF they smoke, while moving at sea, you may get a whiff of smoke however as another poster has said, it should not be an issue... The casino on board CCL ships is 1/2 smoking.. however it is one big room so you may get some there.. You will find that most, and I say most smokers, of which I am one of, are usually pretty cool about where they smoke.. If it is allowed, they will as I will.. However if I am in a no smoking area, I don't.. Plain and simple, follow the rules...

I wish I could agree with the prior posters, but I just cannot. DW and I are nonsmokers, just back from a two-leg cruise (a 3-day segment and a 10-day segment) in Europe. We had a verandah cabin.

On the first segment, one of our neighbors smoked a cigar, and when he was out there smoking, we just could not stand to be outside, even when the ship was in motion.

On the second segment, the inhabitants changed, but they smoked very strong cigarettes (I think the cigarettes were a European brand), so strong that being out on our verandah was far from enjoyable, even when the ship was in motion.

We have had cigar smoking neighbors before, both forward and aft of our cabin, and even though they are outdoors on a verandah, the odor is choking. This was the first time that cigarettes were just as foul-smelling as cigars.

Vickie,

Unfortunately, you cannot choose your neighbors. Just pray for good luck. Our family enjoyed clean fresh air on our balcony- blissfully unaware of anyone smoking for most days of the cruise. On the last 2 days, it was like we had a new neighbor (who did smoke). It was not overpowering, but, we did comment to each other how lucky we had been most of the week!

There is always a risk that someone next to you will be smoking. We have been fortunate over the years but on ocassion has someone who does smoke a lot next to or near us.

I do have a question. On most cruise ships cigar smoking is prohibited on ones verandah and is only allowed in say certain open areas of the ship (not verandahs) and say a cigar room. Was cigar smoking allowed on verandahs on your cruise or did the passenger just break the rules. If it is the latter I would have immediately called the reception desk. Just curious about that. What cruise line were you on?

Here's the policy for RCCL

Effective January 2008, smoking is only permitted in designated areas and outdoors on the Starboard side of the ship (contact the Guest Services for details). Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, hallway or corridor. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom or on Oasis class Boardwalk or Central Park private balconies, however, it is permitted on private ocean view balconies of balcony/suite staterooms. A $250 penalty will be applied to the SeaPass for guests found smoking in staterooms or on the private balconies in Boardwalk and Central Park onboard Oasis class ships. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

We've never had a problem with balcony smoke. Caught a whiff occasionally but nothing serious....for us. If you have a smoking neighbor your reaction will be in part up to you. For some people any smoke is too much while for others some smoke is inconvenient but tolerable.

Hopefully you will be blessed with non smoking neighbors.

I checked and double checked the RCCL web site (OP is on Navigator) and can find no reference to cigars being prohibited on balconies.

Keith--we were on HAL.

As far as I know, HAL does not prohibit smoking cigars or cigarettes on the verandahs.

I think HAL is considering revising it's smoking policies, as earlier this year, they were giving smoking surveys with their end-of-cruise surveys. Time will tell if HAL does anything, I guess.

unfortunately when smokers and nonsmokers are neighbors, in a casino, or passing by each other on the ship it is uncomforatable for both parties. i am an extremely respectfull and cautious smoker myself. i have to say though, that even when i am in a smoking zone and someone with kids or elderly people walk by, i still get those "looks". I try not to let my bad habbit affect everyone else. I just wanted to let you know that not everyone is a rude smoker and not caring where the wind blows it. i dont give dirty looks or say comments to people who dont smoke so why should we be repremanded? this is not directed towards any poster in particualr, just wanted to let you know how this one smoker feels. more power to you that you dont smoke and good luck with your neighbors!
