After booking my first cruise on the Ryndam, I spent six months telling everyone I was going on a cruise on the "Rinn-dam". Imagine my surprise when I was welcomed aboard the "Rine-dam". Oops.

Gah!

I thought it was the Rinn-dam as well!

:o

Maybe I should check pronunciation of Maasdam...

I love reading these posts. I thought I was the only one who did not know how to pronounce Zuiderdam or the other HAL ships. Is it dam or dahm? Is it Zider or Zweeder? I think I heard just about everything before and after our cruise and just stopped trying. Cherie

I have read that Zuiderdam is "zider" rhyming with "cider."

Still waiting on the "dahm" vs. "dam" though!

I've always called it Noor-dahm. But I think someone corrected me that it's Noor-dam (rhyming with the name "Sam").

GOD I NEED A CRUISE ........BADLY *LOL*

LOL...That's funny!

I recently came across hubby's old Speedo from waaaaaayyyy back when he was a high school kid. OMG, our kids about died laughing when they saw the thing. Good thing I tossed all my old string bikinis years ago! That would have been a Kodak moment for sure! But it would have been fun to see their faces. lol

I wouldn't wear a Speedo even back when I was in Speedo wearing shape *LOL*

Here's Copper10-8's pronunciation guide ...

... the Dutch have accents and even dialects depending on what part of the country they're from so you might get a different pronounciation from someone from the province of Friesland (the far north), Amsterdam in the province of Noord Holland in the west and/or the southern provinces of Brabant and Limburg. Even the inhabitants of the three big cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag (the Hague) have their own accents.

Prinsendam "Princen-dam" as in "Prince"

Statendam "St-ah-ten-dam" as in "say Aah"

Maasdam "Maahs-dam" as in "say Ahh"

Ryndam "Rhine-dam"

Veendam "Veyn-dam" as in "hey"

Rotterdam "Rott-ehr-dam" as in Rotweiler

Amsterdam "Ahm-ster-dam"

Volendam "Vohl-en-dam" as in "Foal"

Zaandam "Zahn-dam" as in "say Aah"

Zuiderdam "Zey-der-dam"

Oosterdam "Oasterdam" as in Toast but drop the "T"

Westerdam "West-ehr-dam"

Noordam "Nor-dam" as in More

Thanks Sundagger. Here is a breakdown of the ones I thought of correctly:cool::

  1. Prinsendam "Princen-dam" as in "Prince"
  2. Statendam "St-ah-ten-dam" as in "say Aah"
  3. Maasdam "Maahs-dam" as in "say Ahh"
  4. Rotterdam "Rott-ehr-dam" as in Rotweiler
  5. Volendam "Vohl-en-dam" as in "Foal"
  6. Zaandam "Zahn-dam" as in "say Aah"
  7. Westerdam "West-ehr-dam"
  8. Noordam "Nor-dam" as in More

And incorrectly:eek::

  1. Ryndam "Rhine-dam" (I thought RINN-dam)
  2. Veendam "Veyn-dam" as in "hey" (I thought VEEN as in scene)
  3. Amsterdam "Ahm-ster-dam" (I thought AM as in ham)
  4. Zuiderdam "Zey-der-dam" (I thought ZWEEDerdam)
  5. Oosterdam "Oasterdam" as in Toast but drop the "T" (I thought OOST as in boost)

"Lido Shuffle..." Whew! That was quite a few brain cells ago, but thanks for the reminder.

And yes, I still have some vinyl albums around. :) I only I can get the Victrola cranked up to play them...

We call our basement the Vinyl Resting Place. :) Now I have Boz Scaggs stuck in my head. :p

Hubby was a big swimmer...he wore it for his swim team. I think that was the only one he had, but it was certainly something. lol

DW always tells DD and her friends to enjoy their bikini, thong and low rider years because they are short lived *LOL*

That is the truth! They are very short indeed.

So....... how does one correctly pronounce "Maasdam" anyway?

I've been calling it Mahzdam - not Mossdahm or Mossdam.

This question has come up before. Back in July '03 poster tomc wrote a few limericks about the pronouciations. They were so clever I kept them. Here's what he had to say about the Maasdam---

The "-dam" with an M goes by "Mahz,"

(Like sheep who are noisy make "baas.")

The snobs that we face

Don't like the word "vase,"

And insist that the ship rhyme with "vahz."

And incorrectly:eek::

  1. Ryndam "Rhine-dam" (I thought RINN-dam)
  2. Veendam "Veyn-dam" as in "hey" (I thought VEEN as in scene)

I also thought of those incorrectly. I've been on the Veendam twice and noticed that the crew varies a bit in their pronunciation of the name.
