Is this the same St. Johns?

The island of St. John USVI is a little over 200 miles from the capital of Antigua and Barbuda - St. John's - located on the northwest coast of Antigua.

They're both worth visiting; St. John USVI is about 2/3 national park and is otherwise lightly developed (island population around 5,000 half of which live in the village of Cruz Bay) The island bounds Drake Passage, the British Virgin Islands, and adjacent St. Thomas USVI.

St. John's Antigua is a friendly easily walked port town (population about 25,000) with colorful restored buildings adjacent the harbor (Redcliffe Quay) that contain shops and restaurant-bars. Antigua (population about 84,000) has many nice beaches elsewhere as well as the very attractive English Harbor - Nelson's Dockyard historic area on its south coast.

So is St John USVI, close to St Martin??? We are going to Antigua and thought we were going to St. John in USVI! Would like to get to the one in USVI. HELP!!! thanks!

There is a good deal of separation between the islands of St John, USVI, St Martin / St Maarten, and Antigua. See the map at http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=17.978733,-63.533936&spn=3.62029,4.295654&z=8

On the far left is the edge of Puerto Rico. The island with the city label Charlotte Amalie, to the right of Puerto Rico is St Thomas, USVI. If you zoom in on that island you will see just to the right of it the island of St John, USVI. Between the two islands is the Phillsbury Sound. Red Hook is on the east (right) side of St Thomas and it is from there one can take a ferry over to Cruz Bay, St John, USVI.

In about the center of the original map the island just below Anguilla (not to be confused with Antigua) showing the cities Philipsburg and Marigot is St Maarten / St Martin. On the left side of the map is Antigua and Barbuda, the island showing the cities Osborn & Liberta is Antigua. St John's, Antigua will show on the west (left) side of the island as you zoom in.

Many eastern caribbean itineraries stop in either or both of St Thomas (Charlotte Amalie) and St Maarten (Philipsburg). If your cruise is calling at St John's, Antigua it is more likely than not that one or both of these stops will also be on the itinerary.

You need to book a cruise to St. Thomas, which is where the excursions/ferry to St. Johns, USVI come from. Cruise ships don't go directly to St. Johns.

St. John was a port on our Azamara Journey cruise. We tendered into Cruz Bay.

Once upon a time, long long ago and faaar away

every educated household had a book of maps.

Maps from all over the world.

Asia, Africa, North and South America, Islands in the Pacific even.

That book of maps was called an Atlas.

I have two of them.

I also have Google Earth, the recent internet-equivalent of the Atlas.

Nice to have both, just in case the power goes out.

Hmmmm...
