Yup it is totally true and vigorously enforced, and it is the only reason I have rebooked with Celebrity. I had tried them once and was not that impressed, they were ok but thats all, other lines had more to offer that I wanted, but this No Smoking is a huge deal for me.

So I have booked with them again and let them know the reason why.

If brother-in-law is a smoker, there are still a few places on the ship where he can smoke. If he's hellbent on a smoke in his cabin or on the balcony, he may want to look at a different cruiseline. Not trying to be a jerk, but if he were on the balcony next to mine, and I smelled his cigsmoke, I'd be calling the hotel director. It's a HUGE deal (or dealbreaker) to a lot of cruisers.

:):) This is the reason we switched to Celebrity Solstice for our January 2010 cruise.

We cruise once per year and on our January 2009 Princess Ruby cruise we were next to heavy smokers. Every morning around 6:30 am they would start coughing then I would smell smoke in our room through the ac vent above our bed. they smoked the whole time on the balcony so I paid for a balcony and didn't use it. When I asked for a non-smoking room for 2010 they informed me that was not possible. I then researched the cruise ships and have decided that Celebrity, because of their strict smoking policy is our new cruise ships which will be our 6th in 2010. Thank you Celebrity.

I appreciate it so much that I emailed Celebrity to let them know that I booked and got my sister to book JUST BECAUSE of the No Smoking policy. I want them to know that they did the right thing. Positive feedback always helps. I had also mentioned it when I called them and the agent said yes there had been a huge demand for them to ban smoking on balconies.

Good idea. I will e-mail them right now. I wrote Princess an e-mail to tell them I would not be back. I told them even though my Celebrity cruise was more than the Princess cruise that I didn't mind paying extra to be able to enjoy my balcony. I am really shocked to find out about the casino being non-smoking on Celebrity. i guess maybe I will have to go in there now and check it out. See you in Jan 2010 Celebrity:):):)

  • 1 month later...

I read somewhere (the brochure?) that Celebrity has a policy limiting smokers to a very select areas of the ship and forbids smoking in guest cabins or on their balconies.

As a non smoker I think it's a great policy, guaranteeing that my cabin won't stink of tobacco and that I can sit on my balcony knowing that I won't have to breath in second hand smoke, but does this policy have teeth to it?

Does Celebrity enforce these new no-smoking rules?

It sure would appear they do, based on what recent cruisers have reported. If someone is smoking where they shouldn't be, let a crew member know.

We are smokers and have no issue with the new policy (now how refreshing is that? ;) ). We don't smoke indoors at home, so heading outside to the designated areas won't bother us.

I can't remember if it was Celebrity we were on (I think it was) when the balconies on both sides of the ship were under surveillance by watchers on the bridge, I assume keeping an eye out for smoke. It was shortly after a fire on a cruise ship, if I remember correctly. Smoking material had been improperly disposed of, blew onto a lower cabin balcony and caught something on fire (towels, drapery, something).

Ya, we sailed shortly after the Star Princess fire on another Princess ship and noticed they had spotters on the bridge watching balconies for that exact reason. Princess has since retro-fitted all their balconies with sprinkler systems as have a number of lines. (Does Celebrity have sprinklers on the balconies? )

YES. ANd if you smell smoke anywhere near your cabin, call the desk and report it. They'll find the problem and deal with it. It's not your job to say anything to a passenger.

Great.

We haven't had too many issues with smoke bothering us in the 20 + cruises we've taken, but it has happened a couple of times where a chain smoker severely limited our enjoyment of our own balcony.

I'm impressed enough with Celebrity's policy that I just cancelled a Princess booking and switched to a January Millennium cruise! :D

For the most part I agree that Celebrity enforces the smoking rule. Having said that, we returned last Friday on the Constellation and I did see a woman in the royal suite beneath our cabin smoking and putting the ashes in a tin can. I saw this twice.

This begs the question of what did the butler do or not do (report them?) and what did she do with the ashes.

You might ask what I did. After the second indident, I told my DH about it and we debated about how to approach guest relations. I agree with another OP, it is not my job to say anything to or about another passenger and I wanted to make sure Guest Relations handled it with discretion.

The only reason we did not report it is that we both were looking for this to happen again so there were two of us, but she never did it again on the balcony, so somebody must have said something to her.

I did put it on my comment card with the stateroom number.

I don't understand why you waited to report it to have both of you see it. you don't have to provide witnesses you know. If you see or smell smoke call the front desk and report it.

Ohhh the SMOKING POLICE!!! LOL

I am a nonsmoker, but love my occasional cigarette on my balcony on vacation in the morning with coffee or in the afternoon!

Have booked the penthouse suite, bacuse of it...since the balcony is secluded and big enough not to disturb anybody.

Don't be surprised if you get a little knock on your door. Smoke drifts, and you may be tattled on. Just a fair warning.
