justfoxie Posted February 27, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Hi all, I was wondering - when the ships post their docking and leaving times for the various ports, are these listed in local time or some sort of "ship time" that is different from the local time? Rare LHT28 Posted February 27, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 27, 2009 In my experience the ship will change to local time. I have read some cruise line do not do this but the cruise we have done they do change accordingly Lyn
Sheffie Posted February 27, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Most of the ships I have been on change to local time, but not all. It is up to the discretion of the captain. The information will be in your daily newspaper, and it will be posted at the gangplank if it is different than local time.
juggles Posted February 27, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 27, 2009 when we sailed from grand cayman to cozumel, we had to put our watches back an hour. The ship goes off GMT [Greenwich Mean time/UK] so for instance Cozumel was 6 hours behind UK time. We then had to put it forward the night after to sail to Princess Cays. eh2zed Posted February 27, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Typically it will posted in the daily newsletter and when leaving the ship there will a time check display. Some will leave a note on your pillow after turn down service that you should change your clocks or watches before retiring for the night. Most usually ship time and shore time will be the same. Some have talked of exceptions but we have never experienced it.
TheVegasMan Posted February 27, 2009 #6 Share Posted February 27, 2009 In my vast cruising experience (1 cruise each with HAL and CCL) the ship has stayed on the same time as the embarkation port.
wrp96 Posted February 27, 2009 #7 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Some of my cruises have stayed on the same time as the embarkation port, some have changed to local time (and a few were in the same time zone the entire time so it didn't matter). If you are looking at an itinerary online, that is ship's time - whatever ship time may be.
Karysa Posted February 27, 2009 #8 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Daylight Savings Time begins on March 8th this year so Florida and the islands of the Eastern Caribbean will be on the the same until the clocks go back to EST in the fall. caber Posted February 27, 2009 #9 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Princess stayed the same as local time in my recent Caribbean cruise, except from one port where there was a 30 min difference.
98Charlie Posted February 27, 2009 #10 Share Posted February 27, 2009 Some do and some don't. All of our Carnival cruises have stayed on the same time as the embarkation port. I think that Princess changed on some and didn't on others. One NCL cruise changed the time 4 times during a 7 night cruise:eek: They will have the information in the daily news plus a reminder note on your bed at turn-down if the time changes. Just make sure that you know the correct time to be back to the ship when you are in port. Charlie
Putterdude Posted February 28, 2009 #11 Share Posted February 28, 2009 I have always found the ships maintain local time and that is certain for embarkation and disembarkation.
marco Posted February 28, 2009 #12 Share Posted February 28, 2009 Whether they do or don't...make sure you set your watches to SHIP time. Last year, some folks "missed the boat" out of a port because they weren't on ship time and got back to the pier an hour after we sailed! They thought it was quarter to 5, but it was actually quarter to 6 (ship time) and we sailed at 5 (ship's time). and they thought they'd be back 15 minutes prior to departure. If need be, when you're getting off the ship just ask, "what time is it now?"
