I'm frustrated with the lack of sailings out of NJ during the 2010 school breaks.

We loved the NCL Gem out of NYC, and the convienece of NOT flying, but would like to do a different itinerary, try a different line - does anyone know why they don't offer sailings durning Presidents week and after Easter next year? It seems to me they could name their price as NCL does, and get it.

can't be dry dock, EX is supposed to have drydock jan 3-13 2010. Can't go too much further in a week. It is a 9 day cruise to get down to SJ and the caribbean. So for a short cruise there's isn't anyplace to go other than Bermuda (5 days)

I am afraid that you are misinterpreting the data on the website.

Bookings for cruises after April 2010 haven't been posted yet. It's not that EX won't be sailing from NJ. They're just not available yet. They should open in the next month.

they haven't released all the 2010 itineraries as yet. there was talk of moving explorer out and bringing another ship up, but according to Capt Ryan a few weeks ago, Ex is scheduled for Cape Liberty for the next year or som

Carol, President's week is in February, aren't those sailings open yet?

February 2010 dates ARE there on the website. Perhaps the OP doesn't realize that a 9 night that leaves on 2/5 will return on 2/14, when a 12 night leaves that gets back on 2/26, when the next 9 night departs.

That takes care of February.

I doubt that RC will return to Philadelphia. It takes HOURS to go up or down the Delaware River into the open ocean. Those are hours, in both directions, that the casino and shops cannot be open. Lost revenue = corporate unhappiness.

I wonder if a 4-day CTN or Bermuda Cruise (just one day in Bermuda) out of Bayonne, strategically timed over the 4-day NJEA break (NJ public schools off first Thursday/Friday in November, plus the weekend), would ever be considered by RCCL as an itinerary...

I assumed the shops, etc. could open as soon as the ship left port.

I thought the issue was that the ship wasn't competing with the local offerings. I guess that's not the case?

No, it is too cold in November for Bermuda

The ship has to be a certain distance "out to sea", i.e., away from the coast, to be outside local jurisdiction. That doesn't happen for a long time when a ship sails out of Philadelphia.

Roger that (never been to Bermuda...), but I do think that with the regional draw Explorer has, they can do something with this 4-day weekend...

A 4 day? I hope not!!! I like the 7 or 9 day at that time.l In our area of NJ the kids are off ALL WEEK. That's our favorite time to cruise!!!! :)

Would rather see more out of Philly. Shorter Drive

My cousins work with the ports and trying to get cruises - one out of Philly the other out of Baltimore. Philly lost a lot of business just a few years ago, a lot of lines didn't renew their contracts. That stinks for us PA folks! My cousin wasn't happy with it either. :)

The problem with the President's week sailing in 2010 is that it is the 12 day. Kids are out of school for 1 week, and would need to miss 1 more week. We originally booked it, and just changed it, as I don;t want the girls to miss that much, and it really is not a good time for me to be out 2 weeks.

The problem with this is the Passenger Services Act (usually referred incorrectly as the Jones Act). This says that the cruise can not be transportation within the USA without a foreign and distant port being visited. Where are all of those lush tropical islands off the coast of Joisey? I mean that is where everyone wants to go right? Newfoundland is probably great in November, or how about Greenland? Geography is your friend... do not be afraid of the map and globe.:D

We actually looked at the Explorer last year over the November teachers convention weekend (8 day sailing) when my son would only have missed 1 1/2 days, but ended up not booking it for a few reasons.

I live in NJ and have done Explorer before (it is nice to drive to the port), but was leary of booking with how many kids I felt would be on board with all the school vacations that week. Also, the cost of the cruise was ridiculous. We ended up booking the Freedom that same week (7 days instead of 8) and with flights it was still cheaper for us.

So, while I voted in the poll to have more sailings out of NJ don't know that I would take advantage of them if they were there. Now bring a Freedom class in next year to replace Explorer and maybe I'll have to rethink that!
