Italian Strikes: 15 May

Recommended Posts

There are several transportation strikes scheduled for 15 May. Currently listed:

Alitalia noon -> 4 p.m. note: being supported by some other air workers.

National rail company: 9 a.m. -> 5 p.m.

Local transportation: all day

Sometimes they cancel the announced strikes close to the date of proposed action.

Also a rail strike for 24 hours beginning at 9 p.m. 9 May

We are in Naples that day- Would private tours be impacted?

no, local transportation means city buses, metro, trams, etc.

Also, it is unclear if local transportation in all cities will be on strike. If you are being picked up and dropped off at the dock, you have no worries (other than traffic snarled even worse the normal in Naples).

If the strike goes as planned, the public buses et al will not be running. Two items to consider:

a) as mentioned, these strikes are more than occasionally called off.

b) even if not called off nationally, the union in the city, province, or region will sometimes forgo or modify the work action.

An easy place to see is: http://www.trasporti.gov.it/page/NuovoSito/site.php?p=scioperi

Note: only major (i.e., national and regional transportation sites are listed here).. there is another official website which lists all strikes. Do a search of this forum for the url and instructions.

If you absolutely must have it in English: http://www.summerinitaly.com/planning/strike.asp which occasionally misses an action.

This is the official website:

http://www.commissionegaranziasciopero.it/

It is in Italian only!

On the first page, click the box titled: "Ricerca Avaonzata Scioperi"

On the next page enter the following:

Data Sciopero "dal" - strike from date - boxes, left to right, are: Day (format 'dd'), Month (format 'mm'), and year (format 'yyyy')

Data Sciopero "al" - strike to date (format as above)

Click on the button marked "Cerca"

Is the Metro system in Rome under the same contract as the trams and buses? The Summer In Italy site refers to buses and trams.

This is from the official site provided by Foye.

"LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT date strike: 18.05.2009-date strike to: 19.05.2009 Comet-workers involved in contract Trambus of Rome-possible 2^action by 25 to 26.5 trade unions information about the strike falpas Orsa (segr.prov. I am not sure how it works (or doesn't work?) in Italy, but you can never be sure who will or will not honor a picket line!. In Halifax , Canada we had a ship's excursion & the driver of the bus would not break a picket line of National Park workers to drive us up to the Citadel ... that was the main part of the tour . They gave us an added stop at the cemetery for Titanic victims & then dropped us off near the Citadel & gave us our tix. The bus company also gave us free transfers on a hop of & on bus back to the ship..for those who did not want to miss this place. Maybe they should have asked the driver about this ahead of time-----

Hopefully this won't be your situation in Italy!
