Credit card charge

This might be a silly question but when you provide your Credit Card to Princess at check-in to cover expenses do they place a hold on the card? If they do, does anyone know about how much per day? (we are taking a 9 day cruise) or does Princess just gets the card number and just charges the total at the end of the trip?

Thanks!

Had another question about Canadian credit card. On the boarding pass there's 2 options. One has Princess authorizing Global Card Sevices to change the money over with a 3% fee, option 2 is having your bank change over the fund with a fee. Princess says option 1 may be cheaper. Was wondering what other Canadians opt for.

Thanks

It's pretty likely that a hold is placed on your account to guarantee payment. Sorry, I can't tell you how much.

Rather than hijack this thread, why don't you start a new one with your question?

Option 1 is almost always worse. And it is common for them to do option 1 even if you check that you want option 2.

In most countries, you can get a credit card that does not charge a fee for the currency conversion.

Yes they put a hold, but I can't tell you the amount. I have heard statements ranging from $100/day to $500 for a week.

Hello from Halifax, NS,

We always insist that our cruise charges be made in US dollars. Even with the VISA charges, it has always worked out cheaper than being billed in Canadian dollars by the cruise line.

There are quite a few threads that discuss this issue. The most frequent answer has been $300 per person for a 7-day cruise. A number of threads indicate the pre-authorization or "hold" is adjusted downward (or upward) as your onboard spending habits become known.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the benifits/pitfalls of using a pre-paid credit card vs. debit card vs. personal credit card. Some have checked in with a credit card and then settled their bill with cash or a debit card. Others start making deposits to their onboard account, over time pre-cruise, so some/all of their final bill is "paid for" before they start their cruise. Final charges are not applied to your credit/debit card until the cruise is over. The biggest concern with credit/debit card use appears to revolve around the time lag from end-of-cruise until the "hold" is released.

MSN Travelers I did not know that you could begin applying funds towards your on board account pre-cruise....I like that idea how do I do that now for my putting funds on my on-board account...is there somewhere in the cruise personalizer where that can be done? Can you tell I'm not such a seasoned cruiser :)???

Just call Princess and do it on the phone. Ask for confirmation email. Very easy.

If I have a large OBC to begin with ($5000) for a 12 night cruise, do I have to provide a credit card to be pre-authorised when I embark?

I have no intention whatsoever of spending beyond my $5000 OBC?

How would you have a 5G OBC?

Princess puts a hold on the credit card once you check-in and board the ship. I don't know how much. :(

Other cruiselines, such as HAL, put a $60/day/pp hold on your credit card as soon as you complete your online personal information (not exactly an incentive to pre-register your credit card.) Princess does not do this until you board.

I prepaid $500 on my cruise this past spring, a 10-day cruise, & it wasn't quite enough. Next spring I'm going on a 15-day cruise & I'll most likely pre pay of about $1k. I simply told my TA how much OBC I wanted to have & she forwarded it on to Princess. The first evening I had a confirmation on my door reflecting the $500.

Because I pre-paid it !

In other words, you expect to be spending an average of $416.66 per day on board? Whatever could you be purchasing for that amount of money? Then again, there's the jewelry store.

2 cocktails +tip ($16.66) and $400 in the casino. In other words, if I spend it on anything else, I will let you know :p

That is alot of coin~

I put 200 yesterday on OBC, and try to do at least 100 per month. I try to have between 500-1,500 OBC. ALl you do is call and give them yr card and for how much.

As for the Creidt card amount. I think they just verify it is a open account.

If they do 300.00 per day per person on a 9 day cruise from NY to San Juan, and their are four people in the cabin who is to say someone HAS 10,800 available on their card? Even a week with three people at 300.00 per day that is still over 5 grand!

IF ANYTHING MAYBE 100.00 PER DAY PER ROOM!!!

This is why I ALWAYS DO THE OBC WAY!!! easier, and I can always ADD CASH!

A bit of advice for your next cruise Don't sent it as OBC to your shipboard account. Send it as Casino credit. You get vouchers to redeem for cash at the casino cage with no surcharge and you don't have to be concerned about spending down.

Thanks so much Pia I will do on Monday morning! Do you know if I can use my debit or checking account number? Sorry for all the questions...:o

You have to use a credit card, so I suppose it will be your debit card. They won't take money directly from your checking account.

My math says it's $2100, $300 X 7 days. It's not a charge but a hold. Just contact your credit card company if you think it will create a problem and get a temporary increse for the length of the cruise. Don't give them a card you are nearly maxed out on.

Anything I don`t spend I will take out with a slots account in the casino prior to the last night (subject to $1500 daily max and no more than $5000 for the entire cruise - Princess Cruises Answer Book), with no surcharge either.

I have it all sorted!

FYI....not all ships have slot account capability.
