Villefranche...probably Monaco & Monte Carlo

Recommended Posts

Hi

Im docking here 7am-6.30pm in September. Think this has to be Monaco and Monte Carlo... Monaco. I guess the casino/palace for Monaco and maybe the marina in Monte Carlo (unless someone wows with me another option)

Would prefer not to do ship excursion but dont want to spend a lot of money/time/hassle getting there - not keen on taxis. Can someone help me with which way round to do this, how and timescales please.

As always THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

Paula

Justanordinarygirl, Villafrance is Nice France, u are about 30 minutes from Monte Carlo, and about 45 minutes from Cannes, I was in Villafrance in May. We took shore excursion up to a small town in the hills. St. Pauls was the name of the town. It was greatl; at artsy town. Here was my itinerary and if u stopping in any of these ports I can help u.

Southampton, Lisbon, Vigo, Girbraler, Sadinia, Rome, Florence, Nice, Barcelona. In 2007 I was in Venice, Dubrovnik, Kuduashi, Santorini, Corfu

Another Cincinnati recommendation to visit the charming St. Paul de Vence. If you have any interest in art, the Chagall Museum in Nice, designed by the artist himself, and very small and intimate, almost church-like, is a great stop for an hour.

As someone said, Villefranche is a stone's throw from Nice. Nice is nice just to stroll around in, both the old town and other shopping districts. There's also a beach there!!! But beware, the beaches are all stone here, mostly round stones. But you certainly could try the waters.

P.S., just to add, I googled Villefranche, and apparently it has sandy beaches.

Just back.....we took Dream-Tours and went to Eze.........which I liked much better than Sr paul de Vence, Nice, St. Paul and Monaco. It was about 75 euros per person in a van of 8 people + tip.

If you are interested in Monaco be aware that you are charged for simply entering the Monte Carlo casino. it is 10 Euros per person. The "town/country" is very pretty, but it is very packed with people- mostly tourists. Lots of shops and you can see how the "rich and famous" live.

Eze was interesting in that we saw how people actually lived in places built 700 years ago. It is touristy, but not as much as St. Paul was.

Nice was OK, we walked down to the water and spent a little time at the "Flower Market", but didn't see much else.

We did a half day tour to Eze and Monaco/Montecarlo with Travel Tour Prestige. Both places were so beautiful, and Catherine a lovely, personable guide. We could have done this on our own by train/bus by using a guide I think we used our time better. And Catherine's commentary and stories would not be found in a guide book.

It sounds like taking the train to Monte Carlo might work for you cost and time wise, but not sure about 'hassle'? We did Monte Carlo/Monaco and Eze from Villefranche by train and bus, and with some advance research, along with downloading bus and train schedules, it went quite smoothly. Our transportation costs for the day were less than 10 euros each. However, if you don't like using local transportation, navigating on your own with a map and doing a fair bit of walking, then you might find this to be too much of a hassle, in which case, the private tours recommended above might be worth the extra cost.

Paula,

We were there a couple of years ago and did a private tour with Gee and Dream Tours ( I think). It was awesome. We went to Nice, Canne, Eze, Monaco and Monte Carlo. You may want to check your Roll Call to see if anyone is looking to share a tour. If not, Monaco is nice for seeing the palace and the changing of the guard and it's quaint streets. Grace Kelly is also buried in a beautiful church in that area. We didn't go into the casino in Monte Carlo, we just walked around and admired the wealth of the rich and famous. Have fun!

I will agree with Susan-M on this one. When I was in Villefranche, I did Eze/Monaco/Monte Carlo from Villefranche with the use of bus and train. Villefranche roundtrip to Monaco/Monte Carlo is actually very very easy with the use of train.

You can check out the train schedules at: http://www.sncf.com/en_EN/flash

Just be sure to do your homework in advance and know what the train and/or bus schedules are so that you make it back to Villefranche in time.

And as Susan stated, it's extremely affordable to do this on your own.
